I also just got my Krasnogorsk. One thing that still confuses me is how the hell do I take off the lens. my krasnogorsk is the m42 lens model. can you make a video on how to remove the lens? if its not too troubling of course
@MrDaniPratomo I no longer have the camera handy (I just moved, its in storage) so I can't make a video on this, but the m42 lens mount is similar to a C mount in that it just needs a firm twist. Other Krasnogorsk cameras use a Bayonet mount but I have no experience with those. Always remember when changing lenses, do it in a clean place so you don't get any dirt or hairs in your gate or FINGERPRINTS on the back of the lens and when shooting be sure to seal the edges with black camera tape.
i just got my K-3 today.. works great, loading is really easy. It's actually a version intended for export to Europe/America (because the "Krasnogorsk" at the front is in english, not russian) But it doesn't fit to my tripod. the screw is to small. Any ideas how i can fix that?
(if there are any mistakes in my english, sorry I'm from Germany ;)
@JWD96 I had the same problem, I had to take my tripod to a shop and have a larger screw put into the tripod, which required that the tripod plate be drilled.
@Schizmo Hey I was just wondering do you have to hold the button down the button to film? how would I use it on a dolly or steadicam if I didn't want to to touch the camera and shake the shot?
@helloimelliott Yes, you do have to hold the button down to film, the only way around that is if you have the little shutter switch extension thing and twist it into the small hole on the button, that way you or someone else can hold down the shutter switch while someone else operates the dolly. That was the method I had to use to get my dolly shot in April's Voice
Great video Dude. Informative and helpful. I just got a K-3 as a gift, and was checking videos trying to get the right pronunciation too, and I stumbled on yours. Hope you are having fun with it! Peace. . .
Great video @Schizmo ! Hey, have you used the camera more? Did it all work? I just bought one! I'm assuming I'm going to need a new light meter battery. Reckon you could message me with the details of how you got yours working? Do you have any films online that you've shot with it? I'd love to see! All the best!

I used this camera during film school (had 3). Great piece of equipment, and still use it for projects. Ebay has great deals on this camera, including some with the motor through Tobin Camera Systems.
@parravision2011 Yeah I know, its completely embarrasing. I recorded this using Youtubes direct webcam feed thing. The preview version was in sync, but once it finished processing it was all screwed up. Nothing I could do about it other than spend another 10 minutes recording a new video and hope it worked (or take the effort to use a real program which, at the time, I didn't have.)
Hey, how is the K-3 at holding the film through the gates? I've had a bad experience with a Bolex where the film kept coming off the sprockets. I think they called it loosing the loop. I need a sturdy 16MM that can take some knocking around that would not jack up my footage. Any ideas? Thanks! Keep shooting!
@wldw10 Hey, they can be excellent, I have stability on two cameras which is perfect. The condition is a factor but out of the 6 i have handled, only one needed adjustment, Dont be put off, these are cheap, very robust, the glass is high quality and they are immensely practical.
I CANT BELIEVE PEOPLE THINK A FILM VIEWFINDER WOULD BE BLACK AND WHITE, MORE SO WHEN THEY ARE ALREADY SHOOTING FILM... MAYBE POSSIBLE ON SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE ADVANCED THAN THE K3 RUSSIAN UGH!
Nice camera man! I almost bought one of these in film school, but I got a much lamer, but cheaper, Bell and Howell Filmo. Are you into super 8 at all? I'm out of film school, and realizing that I can't afford 16, so I'm working on a super 8 short right now. Nice videos, good luck!
whao.. that thing is big!! i had no idea. It looks so small on pictures. I would say that was an awesome buy. The russian stuff is solid as a rock and easy to fix. You should make some stickers for the labels as a translation from russian to english.
The filters are really usable for shooting on Black and white stock. Especially yellow. The whole cam looks like a supersized Super8 camera. Thanks for the "don't run your camera faster than 8fps without film inside" advice. I had no idea about that
@Miikefan88 Yeah thats perfectly normal. What you see through the viewfinder is an image through the lens, bouncing off of a mirror to get to your eye.
nice vid! i got my k-3 two days ago and cant wait to shoot with it. i was wondering though, regarding the light meter and asa iso settings, how exactly do you set them? and where can i look on the film case to find the specifications for them? thanks!
@clownmanit If you look at the light meter switch, you'll see a whole bunch of numbers around the inside and outside rings. One of them is ASA settings, the other is FPS. All you have to do is rotate the ring until the frame rate lines up with the ASA of the film.
and just FYI, the yellow filters are to be used with black and white film only. the yellow filters increase the contrast ratio in your shot, i.e. the more yellow the filter, the more the contrast.
Pretty well! My test reel was pretty nice, I didn't telecine it until last week actually because I didn't feel like spending the money. I've gone on to shoot my cinema 101 project with it, and it looks beautiful. I'll have that finished within the week (since the final cut is due thursday)
The k3 is not without limitations but overall its a sturdy camera to help learn with. But the final result is dependent on what film you use and how you light it, not what camera is used. The camera is a tool
@Schizmo Yeah I agree. I'm thinking about picking up some 250D film for the first shoot. What did you go for? I'm just excited for film, only really use DV in my class.
And... in Ukraine you can buy it for ~70$
CyrilViXP 3 months ago
I'm from Ukraine. "Kragnorsky" or "Kragnagorsk" is incorrect pronounciation. There are no such words in Russian.
KRASNOGORSK [krasnæ'gorsk], letter by letter is correct. It is city in Russia. The title means the red ([k'rasnye]) mountains (['gori]).
As for the camera - it is amazing!
