If anyone has any criticism for Master Oistrakh regarding this caprice which he performed right after playing the entire Tchaikovsky violin concerto then I have this to say to you: YOU play the entire Tchaikovsky concerto then see how you feel. That thing is epic and to play this so cleanly and beautifully afterward with none of the editing or doctoring that gets done nowadays shows the greatness of Oistrakh.
@TonicMike - You are abolutely right but no one would dare to say something negative about Oistrach.(maybe amateurs).Ostrach was and remain the masters MASTER.
@TonicMike - I observed by your comment that you love D.Oistrach.Me too.The world without such giants is going down. It´s enough today to look around...Thanks for posting such musical jewels.
Honestly, the first not may be a little flat, but who cares. Everything else is perfection. Take into account that he just made perhaps the best recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto ever. He is probably a little tired.
The negative comments are laughable...Oistrakh just displayed GENIUS
FANTASTIC bow control...AMEN
this came right after performing the Tchaikovsky and still he masters every slight nuance. Why criticize??? there were no 21st century recording studio tricks....editing or splicing
@OzzyKingofKings No, Caprice 1 by Paganini is more, more difficult. In this piece there are no fast passages in parallel thirds neither so complicated fingering.
I am glad we have you, a distinguished violinist, criticizing Oistrakh. You must be concertmaster of God's orchestra. Brb, checking your YouTube profile for awesome demonstration videos of your violin prowess...
lol, it's funny because most of the "intonation" issues are relative to the timpani
and most of the critics probably don't play with major orchestras, have no claim to fame, or think they're big because they are concertmaster of a no-name orchestra
The pathetic and worthless disputes in this video's comments cause me a headache and nausea.
Oistrakh is one of the most distinguished violinists of the 20th century.
Yes there were some notes out of tune in this performance. But if you're comparing two violinists based on a performance of a mere caprice, you must have quite poor musical judgment.
he has some pretty bad intonation problems. and the tempo... i agree everything doesn't have to be fast but, I, as the general audience, wouldn't want to listen to it for entertainment at this slow tempo.
I saw the whole document on TV many years ago and it's also on youtube, and it's just to say that 5 secondes before he starts Labyrinth he had just given a most fantastic interpretation of the Tchaikovski concerto! In this case it's quite easy to forgive the small imperfections.
people play this kind of pieces always very fast,in order to paralyze the public, but the public should know, not every piece is hard when it is played fast.this piece is one of them, which is easier to play fast.here is slow, would be harder if it was played even more slower.Milstein said, the caprice 1st,is then unplayable,if it is played very slow.
his f sharp is at the begining too low.intonation is not always right here.but it is played slow, this piece is in a slow tempo 1000 TIMES harder than in a fast tempo, because of the richochet.richochet does not really work in a slow tempo.and he tries even to make diffirence between richochet AND detachet
I feel that adding the orchestra makes this piece too clumsy - the solo is very nimble, but putting in all the other parts makes it tiresome to listen to.
Hey; this makes me feel pretty good, it reminds of a Scottish reel I can play quite well. Maybe I should start working on the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto after all. On second thoughts I think I'll leave it till my next incarnation.
I think he was tired because he had just finished playing the tchaikovsky concerto on his 60th birthday... Can I listen to your performance without any mess ups?
May be he lost two or three notes, but common, can you play that like him, and after the tchaikovsky concerto and two heart attaks, the unique thing that I am going to tell you , more respect for a genius, son of a ......., you know what I mean, And also I know what are you thinking, Heifetz is better, NO!!!!!!!!!!, hE IS WORSE BECAUSE HE IS LIKE A ROBOT
I think, though, that the piece is supposed to be a labyrinth for the player, not for the audience.. the title is "the HARMONIC labyrinth," i.e. it's difficult to get through it
Yeah it is tough for the audience if you listen really critically. Everything in this recording is out..I remember a friend I have in a major top ten orchestra was talking about how Oistrakh really does not play in tune compared to some of the best. Szeryng and Heifetz were superior fiddlers for sure.
I don't really dispute the fact that Oistrakh had some real original interpretations. For me a good musician has to have the 3 components: accuracy [intonation], rhythmic, and a beautiful sound. Oistrakh has 2 of those [sound, rhythm]. I think Szeryng was a masterful musician. The violin cannot be played better than him.
Well let's get insulting and make assumptions about me liking midi files (which I don't) because I don't like Oistrakh as much. I think Szeryng was just as much of a musician as Oistrakh. He covered a greater part of the literature than Oistrakh (i.e. Oistrakh did not record any of the Sonatas and Partitas of Bach except the G minor).
precise intonation is part of being a good musician. your opinion about szeryng's phrasing being merely ordinary is simply opinion, oistrakh's intonation be inaccurate is a fact.
what do you think of menuhin's intonation, especially in the third movement of the beethoven concerto on this site?
Also consider that oistrakh was playing this after the tchaikovsky concerto and it was his 60th birthday (getting kind of old), so he must have been tired.
precise intonation is part of being a good musician. your opinion about szeryng's phrasing being merely ordinary is simply, oistrakh's intonation be inaccurate is a fact.
ow is that so ... I'm waiting to see how good you can play beethoven! I is verry easy to give critic when you can't do it better... Btw menuhin is the best player of the 20century ...
The intonation is really no good..Oistrakh doesn't really play in tune listen carefully. Henryk Szeryng's recording of this caprice is far better, and in tune!
My dear Oistrakh. Some times those darn notes are dificult to maintain in tune, don't you think? But what I dislike the most is those damned flowers! Still he's got that good sound
this may very well be my favorite video on youtube... i wish the entire video were just from one angle, my favorite angle, where all you can see it Oistrakh: it's like the voices are coming from the flowers, from the earth, from Heaven... this piece could be wriiten by Ligeti, it's so modern, so cerebral... victorious, delicate, bold... I LOVE IT!
This piece is for violin solo. The orchestra has nothing to do in this piece. The accompaniment by Gennady Rozhdestvensky is good at some moments, but unnecessary and simple. You can't listen to the moving voices written by Locatelli with all the orchestra playing. It's a pity that Oistrakh didn't record it properly.
hey oistrakhmilstein, for years iv been wanting to hear the perfromance of oistrakh of rondo cappriccioso, ill be really greatfull if you can tell me where i could find it.

I think you mean: "It's like the Paganini Caprice no. 1, except more sublime and more difficult."
Personally, I think Oistrakh's rendition is superb. Especially love how he closes it out with the Ds fading into oblivion.
