The debris from the collision would fall back down into Earth instead of remaining in orbit. The size of the object would have needed to be about three times the size of Earth in order to launch the debris into orbit.if the moon did form after such a collision, the orbit would likely be unstable with a distance of only 14,000 miles above the earth and circling it every two hours
Where are the remnants of the impactor? They cannot persist as the asteroid belt; the total mass of those bodies combined would weigh about 1 percent as much as earth, and hence would not even weigh as much as Mars. If any object once co-orbited the Sun with Earth, it would still be in that orbit and would still rest in that trojan point, as the Trojan Asteroids remain today. And if such an object collided with the earth, its remnants would remain, which they do not.
@TenthaveFan316 The video states the remnants coalesced into the 'moon'. The gravitational forces of the orbiting degree would attract each other, forming a 'ball' over time.
They are very quick to gloss over the actual formation part. Basic orbital mechanics says that any orbitting object will return to the same point in the orbit. So all that material that's sprayed out will just fall back to the same spot. How did it form into the moon again?
Do you have a better theory? I find it interesting that Western scientists didn't start giving this idea credence til the late 20th century, yet Babylonian myths have talked about it since thousands of years before Christ was purported to have roamed the Middle-East.
@RCBSilat there was no water on the earth in the form of oceans if that's what your asking, it didn't all splash off into space. Also hydrogen moves faster than escape velocity.
Of all "moon origin" videos on youtube, this is the only accurate one. If the two planets had collided head on and at such a high speed, they both would have been destroyed. the impact must have been in the form of a "grazer", meaning it nearly missed the earth, hitting it minimally at a corner first. Then flying off, but having lost momentum, it returned immediately and hit the earth again and again, each time losing more momentum--and mass--to the earth, until it was nearly all consumed
has any one figured out what would have happened to water. Would it have separated into H and O or plasma or remained in molecules? and if so what speed would these be traveling? I know that at todays temperatures H travels at escape velocity, surely with these temperatures water would too and we would have non left for the oceans or did the majority ice meteorites come after this?
Bad simulation. Not credible. I would like someone to explain why the computer model is not to scale. Why is the moon being shown to be way too close to the earth? You won't notice it unless you know what to look for, but I saw it. Look at it closely and compare it to reality. The moon is much further away, and it didn't just "drift" into a higher orbit. Looks like the naturalist propaganda that it is. It's obvious if you know how far the moon is from the earth. Sorry if you like this.
@jasbushnell The Moon was originally much closer to the Earth and has been drifting away from us by almost 4cm/year (3.8mm to be exact). Over the course of more than 4 billion years, that's amounted to quite a change in distance. We are able to measure this change with Earth-base lasers that fire beams to reflectors placed on the Moon by the Apollo Astronauts, and then measure the time it takes to return the beam.
@jasbushnell But the impact didn't occur near the orbital center, it's thought. They think the body struck Earth Mk1 at a fairly oblique angle - this strike is what sent the Earth spinning at a rate which, once it slowed down over the intervening several billion years has resulted in our 24 hour day. Had it struck dead-center the result probably would have been different. In simulations many angles/speeds they tried didn't result in the creation of the Moon nor a spinning Earth.
@bluechao Look, the moon is at a distance from the earth of, on average, 384,000 KM (about 60 earth radii). And it's traveling nearly exactly perpendicular to the earth with all of it's momentum directed that way. How does that happen in your mind? If the orbit of an object intersects with the earth (i.e. it HIT it) it's not going to suddenly stop moving away from the earth (which ever direction it left), change directions, and move perpendicular. So where did the angular momentum come from?
@jasbushnell Did you actually view the simulation in the video? The physics of it are pretty clear even just visually. The Mars-sized object, itself, was destroyed and mostly absorbed into the Earth. The Moon was made from the remnant particles that were held by gravity in orbit around the new, larger planet. From those particles, within a year, was built the Moon, as they coalesced. Small particles, with less gravity, can easily be captured by a big body like the Earth.
A single, large object the size of the Moon, could not have been captured in orbit by the Earth. This was an old theory, but none of the models could make that work - just not enough gravity to account for such a large body being held in place when traveling such a speed. But a hundred trillion tiny objects created by the impact could each, easily, be captured in a debris disc around the Earth, which then coalesced and formed into the moon.
Great theory, but how come they stop showing the computer modeled simulation before the moon actually forms? They show the collision, the formation of the disk of debris, but then they just cut away and say "and then this would have formed the moon, maybe in just a year." They didn't model one more year to show the moon forming? Or was it that they couldn't get the model to actual form a moon?
@lukeluca2 our techniques aren't refined enough (and computers not nearly powerful enough) to accurately model the collision event. we probably don't even have a clear picture of the initial conditions, like collision angle (asides from it just grazing Earth).
@lukeluca2 A theory doesn't always have to be complete and rigorous to be accepted as scientific consensus. The giant impact theory answers alot of questions about our moon without making so many assumptions. that's why this theory is so popular - its such a model that fits the data and explains some anomalies.
did you know the moon is mostly made of material found in our crust? it has very little iron content.
@lukeluca2 so the model claims it formed out of ejecta from our crust and upper mantle after the collision event, explaining very neatly why our moon is lacking in heavy elements.
@lukeluca2 The animation they show covers about a day or two of the event. It took nearly a year for the moon to form, so they'd have to run that simulation much longer for it to show the whole process...on a show that spent only so much time covering this aspect of the theory, they just didn't have the time to show it all.
I suppose they could have shown it sped-up/time-lapsed, but they didn't. I'm sure it's possible to find the full simulation somewhere, though.
This is a great video! I am a creationist and I agree with this video, and with you. Most creationists need to take a second look at science and the Bible with an open mind.
@TheShadowlin What I understood is that the Earth was already spinning, but in a different pace, so the collision ended up giving the earth its nearly 24 hour pace of rotation, as the woman says at 0:38 "its what gave us our current 24 hour day we believe" she didn't said its what put the earth into rotation.
@zubieta Yes and no. The Earth's spin has been slowing down over time, so days were much shorter right after the collision - the Earth was spinning faster then. But the collision did set our world on whatever rate it was then spinning so that it would, by our time, slow down to the current 24 hour day.
The world would be a better place if we solved the energy and population problem by burning Christians. Its not like they are real people anyway as you can see that they ruined their brains with faith and with solving any questions the have by turning to a book written 3000 years ago by ignorant goat herders and with a simple declaration of "I dunno how that works so God must have use his uber magicz!" At the very least we should start using bibles instead of coal as at least coal isnt stupid.
@Dhadzinsky "Solve the world's energy problem by burning Christians". "Use Bibles instead of coal". This may be the most ridiculous video on all of YT. I can't sit through it without laughing incessantly. And to think all these people with advanced degrees are buying into this pipe dream. The entire premise is patently absurd. Instead of becoming creationists, you people simply become more creative.
The only thing wrong with this theory was the rotation axis of the moon. If this theory had happened the material collecting to make up the moon would have caused it to rotate. Then the odds of the Earth being it's axis becomes highly impossible. In the computer model the moon even ended up with it's own axis. But, if she showed the asteroid hitting the Earth at nearly 90° to the surface it would have splashed out the moon like a water droplet & the Earth would remain to be it's axis.
@GateMessenger : I am not sure what axis of rotation you are talking about here... Seems to me that the impactor would launch most debris out into a disk orbiting the mass center of the earth-debris system, centered pretty much on the new axis as formed by the impactor. Also, the Earth's tidal forces on the moon would have tended to dampen any off axis orbits, a tidal locked moon must be in an orbit aligned to the the planets rotational axis long before modern times.
There is no force that causes the planets to rotate. Most of the rotation comes about from the conservation of angular momentum. Angular momentum is given by L=m*w*r2 where m is the mass, w is the angular velocity in radians per second, and r is the radius of the circular motion. Due to conservation of angular momentum, if the radius of the orbit decreases, then its angular velocity must increase (as the mass is constant).
@translucentorb Yes but the point is that it may explain the origin of moon, of course planets and others formations were born by the collision of early ones!
mercury got hit by a planetoid(caloris basin),venus was hit by
another asteroid(sudden CO2 increase),mars was hit by a pluto-sized planetoid(no crust in nothern hemisphere),
jupiter had enough mass to start its own spin, saturn got hit by a planet(the rings are the debris),uranus was hit by another planetoid(its 90 degree spin),neptune started its own spin(the internal heat inside neptune.
@bajsman i think when scientists read your comment they are immediately going to form theories but on one book i read that uranus was hit by an asteroid that's why its axis got distorted and started spinning on its side =D
Couldnt the formation of the planets (before the giant impacts) make it start spinning? coz the dust that formed the planets wouldn't be coming together like being attracted with a magnet. It would be spinning around the core while coming together. It be impossible for a planet(even if we assume it had zero big impacts) to stay still.
(Rolling Eyes) More SCIENCE FICTION. If the giant impact theory were true then there would have been many satellite bodies formed, not just one singular moon, plus even a ring or 2, like those that orbit the outer planets. This (mis)conjecture desperately grasps at straw. Ancient worldwide records specifically state that the Earth's gravity caught the moon & it was formerly the giant gaseous planet named Kingu that dwarfed Jupiter & had its atmosphere torn away during a cosmocataclysm.
So you cannot uphold your side of the argument with any form of counter-reason since you have desperately resorted to personal name calling, a dead give away of who really is dumb.
Such stupidty on your part doesn't even warrant a thoughful argument. It would be like trying to convince someone that believes the Earth is flat that it is actually round.
this theory was taken from ancient sumerian cuneiform tablets, from the enuma elish, wich speak of a war in the heavens and a planet size ship "nibiru" that caused another large object to collide with the earth, wich was refered to as tiamat at that time and gave birth to the moon. this story predates the bible. do your reseach!
This theory wasn't taken from any damn tablets, and Sumerians wouldn't have survived something the size of Mars colliding with the Earth. It comes from a scientist who saw large impact craters on the Moon and said to himself, "Gee, what is the biggest thing that ever smashed into another big thing in the Universe?"
Well no shit they wouldn't have survived. If you did the research then you wouldn't make such stupid statements. Look up what was on the Sumerian tablets, where they got their information, and what they wrote about - then get back to us.
Also, why are my comments so low in ratings? Is a Christian stating their beliefs a mockery but saying that no God exists isn't? Crap, the internet is a scary place.
I was only putting in my two cents and explaining my views. Most people don't like it when I do, but it was damned decent of you not to fly off the handle like most have done in the past. I have my beliefs and you have yours.
I respect that, I'm not the type of person to convert anyone to anything, and I don't believe you're the type.
It might be interesting to have a conversation about out beliefs in the near future.
Well, aside from all of the 12 and 14 year olds going back and forth about religion and science, this was fairly informational.
Without stating my religious preference, i'll offer this to those that might see it: Please thing before you start "preaching" to people thinking that by telling people they are going to hell, you are yourself becoming a better christian...because you're not. That's called being a hypocrite. Discuss the video and the scientific idea presented thus.
you already said that why will you not allow room in your defined reality for more, its obvious your knowledge of the bible is limited so why the front of blind faith, faith without wisdom is dangerous and has led the the very things that the church apologizes for now. "There are more things in heaven and earth then are dreamt of in your philosophies.."
Who is this Kenny2k08 guy and why is he so scared of contemplating something different? I think the comment about HELL is the answer here. Atheists aren't scared of ever-lasting damnation. Christians are.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Why would you not be scared of eternal damnation? You do realize that it's FOREVER and that it will be and intolerable PAIN and that God offers so much MORE. I'm just trying to help people out and get them to understand what they're facing. Why suffer eternally for a choice you could have made during your 80 or 90 years on Earth? Nobody deserves that.
You're right, nobody does deserve that, which is odd that a God proclaiming to be merciful and just would use hell as a way to take your money, your time, and your soul.
It's called atheism. I don't believe in the "Gospel" or imaginary places such as "Heaven" or "Hell".
Sure, they're interesting in theory, but I don't believe it exists. Most Christians that I know have tried to convert me at one point by attempting to scare me with the concept of Hell.
Funny, I've been to church before, and all I heard from the pastor were thoughts of how bad Hell was.
Christianity is nothing more than scaring people into being good by bringing up Hell.
Wow eight months ago. Some of you guys just won't give up. You must have been to church once in your life because I rarely hear about how I'm going to Hell. And you're wrong about the whole "scare" concept. Christianity isn't just that. It's also thinking, "Hey, did a big boom start all of this or did something intelligent start all of this?".
I don't really have much to worry for about going to hell but if anybody ever says, "Okay, I'm fine with that", just imagine how stupid they're going tofl
I've learnt that it's impossible to argue theology with someone of 'faith'. They will default to their own beliefs no matter what logic you attack them with. But, for a leap of consciousness that is only some hundreds of years old, atheism is catching on fast, don't you think?
Religion is for the ignorant and weak willed. You search for facts to support your preformed answer and it's truly pathetic. I wish you wouldn't post on youtube because all you do is anger the rest of the world with your ignorance. The fact of the matter is, science doesn't support the bible so stop trying to say it does. The bible was written by 100's of different authors who stole stories from other cults to make their own. Look up Simon Magus. Or John the Baptist. It's all bullshit. go die.
Then there must be alot more "ignorant and weak willed" people than "intelligent". A very small portion of the world is Atheist. At least, compared to religious persons. What's the point of being Atheist when you might as well pick a religion and hope that when you die, you don't end up in "the fiery lake" for eternity. I'm a Christian and I'm not ignorant. Ignorant is a man-made term so nobody should act like ignorance is a big deal.

Kenny, Dude, you can't win. All major religions have a fiery death penalty for believers of any OTHER faith.
That most people believe something is certainly NOT evidence that it is true. Most people don't have a degree. Most people thought the world was flat for most of human history. Most people are not role models!
You will also find that many of the MOST educated people in the fields which explain our origins such as biochemistry and physics and NASA scientists are atheist.
I don't care about who is the most educated. They're severely retarded religion-wise. There's not any evidence that the world was created by a big bang. There's not any evidence God created the universe, either. So either you run the risk of going to hell for eternity because you were "educated" or you can live this life having faith and get the chance to spend eternity in Heaven instead of burning painfully forever. Those are the two choices.
I'd much rather have people at my grave say that I was a good Christian and that I'm definitely going to Heaven instead of people saying "He was a very intelligent person. It's just too bad he had no faith in the Lord. I hope hell isn't as bad as they say it is."
HAHA! There's no evidence? a) Large-scale homogeneity b) Hubble diagram c) Abundances of light elements d) Existence of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation e) Fluctuations in the CMBR f) Large-scale structure of the universe g) Age of stars h) Evolution of galaxies i) Time dilation in supernova brightness curves j) Tolman tests k) Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect l) Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect m) Dark Matter n) Dark Energy z) Consistency
Or maybe the things that can't be explained will never be explained and that the "Giant Impact" theory is just that. It's prolly just something someone thot up in attempt to explain something that was never intended 2b explained. Oh and fyi, the Earth is only like 6,000 some odd yrs old. None of that Billion yr crap. Given the rate Earth's core is cooling and reverse it, Earth's surface would b molten by at LEAST 25,000 yrs...let alone 4.5 Billion. This is great fiction tho.
Elementary physics - energy condenses into matter, like water vapor condenses and can turn into ice. Neither the "Giant Impact" or the "7 Days" theory can be absolutely proven, but scientific theories have *much* more basis in reality.
I'm enclined to say you are correct if we believe god is all knowing and all powerful, but if true he is no all loving.... which means he's not god anyway.
No. The Bible explicitly states in 1 John 4:16 that "God is love." (read 1 John 4:15-17 in the NIV 2 put it in context). There is Evil b/c Satan wanted God's spot on the throne & that right there leads in2 a topic that I will admittedly say that I'm not prepared 2 go in2 b/c I haven't the time 2 really dig in2 it & give u answers 2 ur questions & answers 2 ur questions about the answers & so on & so forth. Don't get me wrong, I'd love 2 answer ur questions, time just won't allow me @ the moment.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA HAHAHAHAHAH!!!! I love it when people use scraps of pseudo science to try and discredit an enormous and vastly complex group of biological, chemical mathematical and physical theories, all involved in intricately self supporting general theory of our existence...
Just so they can have an imaginary daddy who is going to look after them after they die. Pathetic and wilful self deceit.
scraps? The Dead Sea Scrolls predate Jesus' existence by about 250 yrs and are almost identical to the Bibles we have now. The only diff.'s are a few articles of speech and if u think that's enough to discredit God, u translate a book that originated in Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew to English and tell me how u do; and I don't care what u say, The Bible has over 40 diff. writers who NEVER MET and has no contradictions AND somehow it's survived 2000 yrs+? Find another book like that, then we'll talk.
Yes scraps, you are afer all arguing with almost the entirity of scientific endeavor.
There are many many contradictions in the bible, but the biggest contadiction of all is the the assertion of an omnibenevolent, omniscient, omnipotent being in the context of the OUR world of suffering. From humans to ants there is suffering, and logically contaradicts at least one of any of the three characteristics of the abrahamic god above.
i can see where you're coming from and that you're totally shooting me down and that's fine. I've spoken complete Truth and now it's just a case of when you'll come to terms with it. I'll be praying for you.
Well I have written a letter to santa about you, asking for a PS3 on your behalf, I hope you get it but you have to believe first... Thats something you have to open your heart to. Otherwise you run the risk of getting nothing.
What does Santa have to do with this? He's make believe and young children believe in him. God could very well be real and people of every age have faith in the Lord. Stop attacking religion. Maybe you want to burn for eternity but others don't want to so just stop trying to get people to stop having faith. PS: PS3 sucks.
The only difference between god and Santa is that Santa promises something you can see: presents. God promises NOTHING that you can see and touch. So he is not as easily falsifiable as Santa.
Both make you feel warm and safe inside. They promise you reward when you are good, punishment when you are bad. The psychology of those that believe in Santa and those that believe in god is EXACTLY the same.
Why run the risk of punishment then? Santa doesn't punish you if you are bad. Well, not in a severe way like God is. God's punishment is far worse than a lump of coal. It's something you really have to think about: "If I don't believe, I could really actually be going to hell for eternity with no way out." For Santa, it's just: "If I don't believe, I could have my Christmas, a 24 hour long day, ruined with a lump of coal. At least I still have presents from relatives."
You're being frightened into believing something, but you have no evidence for hell at all. Yet you will live your life fearing it because that's what you have been taught since you were a small child.
You ignore all of human scientific endeavor to preserve an imaginary god, because your parents told you so!
Ask yourself why you are not a Buddhist or a Muslim, or one of the other 22 major religions in the world.
It's a lot more believable than thinking that the universe came from a random explosion. I believe in God because I live in the United States. If I lived in China, I would probably be a Buddhist or Hindu. If I lived in the Middle East, I'd most likely be Muslim. It sort of just depends on where you grow up. Not only that, I choose to believe in God because I feel there must be a creator out there. There's no possible way people could look like peices of art out of a random explosion.
Your belief in god is essentially a psychological need to control what you really cannot. Your evolutionary derived drive for self preservation is satisfied by your belief system that makes you think you can avoid harm by trusting in a benevolent god and an after life.
By following a set of arbitrary rules and performing rituals such as prayer and communion you psychologically feel like you are safer, exerting some sort of control over a universe of unknown possible harms.
This is tiring to argue of. Just because it may not seem logical doesn't mean that it couldn't possibly happen. Notice how there are several billions of galaxies that are so humungous, Living creatures that look like handcrafted peices of art and a world in which man had the ability to create a way to communite (in several different ways), Figure out the key to survival, and build civilizations. Why would a random explosion give us so many gifts? Wouldn't all that make it seem like God is real?
There's also Satan, who hates everything but himself. God wouldn't dare let a sinner into his kingdom no matter how much he loved them. It would probably hurt him to send somebody to hell but he can't do anything about it.
"It would probably hurt him to send somebody to hell but he can't do anything about it. "
This is one of the many contradictions in Christianity.
He can't do anything about it? He is supposed to be all powerful! He could kill Satan in a second if what you believe is true!
God is meant to KNOW everything, be ALL powerful and ALL loving. Anyone who goes to hell, god knew it before he was even born!So god created them to spend eternity in hell!!??
They weren't created to spend eternity in hell. God isn't going to let people who didn't believe in him in life get a free ticket while others had to have faith. Do you find it fair that some people may get to kill, steal, curse, hate, and basically sin their entire life and just end up in heaven because God loves them? God wouldn't kill Satan because if he wasn't there, there would be no place for the non-believers. See what I'm saying?

People make the choice to go to hell like you did. God figured some would follow and some would refuse to believe. So he also created people who would go to Heaven. Anybody can make the choice to go to Heaven or hell. People make the choice to sin. I sin all the time. I will not lie to you. I've lied. I've cursed. I watch shows God wouldn't find appropriate but if I repent of those sins, I will be worthy of making it into Heaven. You just have to pray each day and ask for forgiveness.
"People make the choice to go to hell like you did."
You clearly aren't getting this... God always new who would not follow, so the people he created that he already new would not follow he created to go to hell... So therefore he could never have loved them.
You believe God created us to sit an exam. You pass by being good and loving him, and fail by not doing so. YES?
God is also omniscient: he knows everything about everything past and future. YES?
A billion years ago he knew I would be having this discussion with you YES? He knew that I would not believe in him, and therefore he knew I will go to hell.
He therefore created me knowing I would spend eternity in hell, YES?????
He didn't create you so you could go to hell. You could easily become a Christian right now. It's not anything difficult. It's not even worthy of being called an exam. It's more like a question: Will you believe in the almighty creator or suffer in hell for eternity?
here lemme start, in the bible jesus is asked about babies and people born without Christianity go back read what he says, copy and past it if you feel like looking like a zealot again(a really bad one at that) the contradictions in the bible are the reasons for several splits in the church since the conception of the church, do you even know what sect u are?MR the bible has no contradictions?
Of course, you're probably going to come up with something like "God would send a believer to hell?!" That could be true. I'm not too sure yet but I repent each day just in case.
Actually if you ask a Muslim, you're going to hell for what you believe, and there is not a scrap of evidence to suggest who is right, only your own baseless assertion verses there baseless assertion.
oh...so that's why Jesus is the only One who has risen from the dead AND that He is the only One whom you can't visit a grave site? True, if you asked a Muslim that that would be true, but you're not asking a Muslim are you?
Vic, there are several other gods in different religions who have stories about death and resurrection, its far from a unique christian claim. Krishna, Mythra, Odin and others.
My overall point is that all you have is a book of stories written decades after the alleged events by people who had a lot to gain by writing them, and that is also all that other religions have.
Still, I'm sure it helps you feel safe and perhaps approved of by your peers, but it doesn't make it true.
Stop using the internet and other peoples research to discredit each other, First off neither of you have enough of a grasp of religion or science to argue about it.
Both of you need to keep reading. Both of you have not even read about the arguments regarding evolution vs creation.
Vedas pre date the bible by a hell of a long time. Can't have faith without doubt , so maybe your own fait in god is only defined by your doubt that he exists.
Stupid atheists giving you -6. They know nothing. Look at how scared they are. Nobody is allowed to discuss religion and trying to save innocent souls from hell without getting minused mulitple times. Can't people just come of Youtube and state their opinions?
Fuck Barnard.

They are very quick to gloss over the actual formation part. Basic orbital mechanics says that any orbitting object will return to the same point in the orbit. So all that material that's sprayed out will just fall back to the same spot. How did it form into the moon again?

@RCBSilat there was no water on the earth in the form of oceans if that's what your asking, it didn't all splash off into space. Also hydrogen moves faster than escape velocity.
lostmywings123 8 months ago
Of all "moon origin" videos on youtube, this is the only accurate one. If the two planets had collided head on and at such a high speed, they both would have been destroyed. the impact must have been in the form of a "grazer", meaning it nearly missed the earth, hitting it minimally at a corner first. Then flying off, but having lost momentum, it returned immediately and hit the earth again and again, each time losing more momentum--and mass--to the earth, until it was nearly all consumed
hotboyclarence 9 months ago
has any one figured out what would have happened to water.

Sorry if you like this.
jasbushnell 1 year ago
@jasbushnell The Moon was originally much closer to the Earth and has been drifting away from us by almost 4cm/year (3.8mm to be exact). Over the course of more than 4 billion years, that's amounted to quite a change in distance. We are able to measure this change with Earth-base lasers that fire beams to reflectors placed on the Moon by the Apollo Astronauts, and then measure the time it takes to return the beam.
bluechao 1 year ago
@bluechao Sorry, 38mm, not 3.8mm.
bluechao 1 year ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@bluechao And the angular momentum. How is that achieved from an impact occurring near the orbital center?
jasbushnell 1 year ago
@jasbushnell But the impact didn't occur near the orbital center, it's thought. They think the body struck Earth Mk1 at a fairly oblique angle - this strike is what sent the Earth spinning at a rate which, once it slowed down over the intervening several billion years has resulted in our 24 hour day. Had it struck dead-center the result probably would have been different. In simulations many angles/speeds they tried didn't result in the creation of the Moon nor a spinning Earth.
bluechao 1 year ago
@bluechao Look, the moon is at a distance from the earth of, on average, 384,000 KM (about 60 earth radii). And it's traveling nearly exactly perpendicular to the earth with all of it's momentum directed that way. How does that happen in your mind? If the orbit of an object intersects with the earth (i.e. it HIT it) it's not going to suddenly stop moving away from the earth (which ever direction it left), change directions, and move perpendicular. So where did the angular momentum come from?
jasbushnell 1 year ago
@jasbushnell Did you actually view the simulation in the video? The physics of it are pretty clear even just visually. The Mars-sized object, itself, was destroyed and mostly absorbed into the Earth. The Moon was made from the remnant particles that were held by gravity in orbit around the new, larger planet. From those particles, within a year, was built the Moon, as they coalesced. Small particles, with less gravity, can easily be captured by a big body like the Earth.
bluechao 1 year ago
A single, large object the size of the Moon, could not have been captured in orbit by the Earth. This was an old theory, but none of the models could make that work - just not enough gravity to account for such a large body being held in place when traveling such a speed. But a hundred trillion tiny objects created by the impact could each, easily, be captured in a debris disc around the Earth, which then coalesced and formed into the moon.
bluechao 1 year ago
@bluechao Yeah. How do you explain the angular momentum?
jasbushnell 1 year ago
ty moon ;)
infernape1789 1 year ago
Great theory, but how come they stop showing the computer modeled simulation before the moon actually forms? They show the collision, the formation of the disk of debris, but then they just cut away and say "and then this would have formed the moon, maybe in just a year." They didn't model one more year to show the moon forming? Or was it that they couldn't get the model to actual form a moon?
lukeluca2 1 year ago
@lukeluca2 our techniques aren't refined enough (and computers not nearly powerful enough) to accurately model the collision event. we probably don't even have a clear picture of the initial conditions, like collision angle (asides from it just grazing Earth).
sbrafk 1 year ago
@sbrafk So really there's no evidence that this is even possible? Do all the models today show that it wouldn't happen?
lukeluca2 1 year ago
@lukeluca2 A theory doesn't always have to be complete and rigorous to be accepted as scientific consensus. The giant impact theory answers alot of questions about our moon without making so many assumptions. that's why this theory is so popular - its such a model that fits the data and explains some anomalies.
did you know the moon is mostly made of material found in our crust? it has very little iron content.
sbrafk 1 year ago
@lukeluca2 so the model claims it formed out of ejecta from our crust and upper mantle after the collision event, explaining very neatly why our moon is lacking in heavy elements.
sbrafk 1 year ago
@lukeluca2 There's lots of evidence that this happened, yes it is possible, all models show it would happen.
9hello123 11 months ago
@lukeluca2 The animation they show covers about a day or two of the event. It took nearly a year for the moon to form, so they'd have to run that simulation much longer for it to show the whole process...on a show that spent only so much time covering this aspect of the theory, they just didn't have the time to show it all.
I suppose they could have shown it sped-up/time-lapsed, but they didn't. I'm sure it's possible to find the full simulation somewhere, though.

The only problem with this is that obviously the Earth was already spinning. Small detail though. Great stuff.
TheShadowlin 1 year ago
@TheShadowlin What I understood is that the Earth was already spinning, but in a different pace, so the collision ended up giving the earth its nearly 24 hour pace of rotation, as the woman says at 0:38 "its what gave us our current 24 hour day we believe" she didn't said its what put the earth into rotation.
zubieta 1 year ago
@zubieta Yes and no. The Earth's spin has been slowing down over time, so days were much shorter right after the collision - the Earth was spinning faster then. But the collision did set our world on whatever rate it was then spinning so that it would, by our time, slow down to the current 24 hour day.
bluechao 1 year ago
I'm not sure if I accept the idea.
I'm sure the acceptted theory will changer later.

can anyone link me up with the original video of the supercomputer simulation?
AntiProtonBoy 1 year ago
The only thing wrong with this theory was the rotation axis of the moon. If this theory had happened the material collecting to make up the moon would have caused it to rotate. Then the odds of the Earth being it's axis becomes highly impossible. In the computer model the moon even ended up with it's own axis. But, if she showed the asteroid hitting the Earth at nearly 90° to the surface it would have splashed out the moon like a water droplet & the Earth would remain to be it's axis.
GateMessenger 1 year ago
@GateMessenger : I am not sure what axis of rotation you are talking about here... Seems to me that the impactor would launch most debris out into a disk orbiting the mass center of the earth-debris system, centered pretty much on the new axis as formed by the impactor. Also, the Earth's tidal forces on the moon would have tended to dampen any off axis orbits, a tidal locked moon must be in an orbit aligned to the the planets rotational axis long before modern times.
tr41 1 year ago
I wonder when we will have the next theory about the formation of our moon?
daarco2 2 years ago
There is no force that causes the planets to rotate. Most of the rotation comes about from the conservation of angular momentum. Angular momentum is given by L=m*w*r2 where m is the mass, w is the angular velocity in radians per second, and r is the radius of the circular motion. Due to conservation of angular momentum, if the radius of the orbit decreases, then its angular velocity must increase (as the mass is constant).

@bajsman i think when scientists read your comment they are immediately going to form theories but on one book i read that uranus was hit by an asteroid that's why its axis got distorted and started spinning on its side =D
PKarklouse 2 years ago
Couldnt the formation of the planets (before the giant impacts) make it start spinning? coz the dust that formed the planets wouldn't be coming together like being attracted with a magnet. It would be spinning around the core while coming together. It be impossible for a planet(even if we assume it had zero big impacts) to stay still.
IURDragon 1 year ago
(Rolling Eyes) More SCIENCE FICTION. If the giant impact theory were true then there would have been many satellite bodies formed, not just one singular moon, plus even a ring or 2, like those that orbit the outer planets. This (mis)conjecture desperately grasps at straw. Ancient worldwide records specifically state that the Earth's gravity caught the moon & it was formerly the giant gaseous planet named Kingu that dwarfed Jupiter & had its atmosphere torn away during a cosmocataclysm.

this theory was taken from ancient sumerian cuneiform tablets, from the enuma elish, wich speak of a war in the heavens and a planet size ship "nibiru" that caused another large object to collide with the earth, wich was refered to as tiamat at that time and gave birth to the moon. this story predates the bible. do your reseach!
egiptiansun 3 years ago
This theory wasn't taken from any damn tablets, and Sumerians wouldn't have survived something the size of Mars colliding with the Earth. It comes from a scientist who saw large impact craters on the Moon and said to himself, "Gee, what is the biggest thing that ever smashed into another big thing in the Universe?"
HaloofCurls 3 years ago

It's called atheism. I don't believe in the "Gospel" or imaginary places such as "Heaven" or "Hell".
Sure, they're interesting in theory, but I don't believe it exists. Most Christians that I know have tried to convert me at one point by attempting to scare me with the concept of Hell.

It's all bullshit. go die.

You will also find that many of the MOST educated people in the fields which explain our origins such as biochemistry and physics and NASA scientists are atheist.
obmitty1 3 years ago
I don't care about who is the most educated. They're severely retarded religion-wise. There's not any evidence that the world was created by a big bang. There's not any evidence God created the universe, either. So either you run the risk of going to hell for eternity because you were "educated" or you can live this life having faith and get the chance to spend eternity in Heaven instead of burning painfully forever. Those are the two choices.
Kenny2k08 3 years ago

Kenny2k08 3 years ago
The only difference between god and Santa is that Santa promises something you can see: presents. God promises NOTHING that you can see and touch. So he is not as easily falsifiable as Santa.
Both make you feel warm and safe inside. They promise you reward when you are good, punishment when you are bad. The psychology of those that believe in Santa and those that believe in god is EXACTLY the same.
obmitty1 3 years ago

Ask yourself why you are not a Buddhist or a Muslim, or one of the other 22 major religions in the world.
obmitty1 3 years ago
It's a lot more believable than thinking that the universe came from a random explosion. I believe in God because I live in the United States. If I lived in China, I would probably be a Buddhist or Hindu. If I lived in the Middle East, I'd most likely be Muslim. It sort of just depends on where you grow up. Not only that, I choose to believe in God because I feel there must be a creator out there. There's no possible way people could look like peices of art out of a random explosion.
Kenny2k08 3 years ago
Your belief in god is essentially a psychological need to control what you really cannot. Your evolutionary derived drive for self preservation is satisfied by your belief system that makes you think you can avoid harm by trusting in a benevolent god and an after life.
By following a set of arbitrary rules and performing rituals such as prayer and communion you psychologically feel like you are safer, exerting some sort of control over a universe of unknown possible harms.
obmitty1 3 years ago
This is tiring to argue of. Just because it may not seem logical doesn't mean that it couldn't possibly happen. Notice how there are several billions of galaxies that are so humungous, Living creatures that look like handcrafted peices of art and a world in which man had the ability to create a way to communite (in several different ways), Figure out the key to survival, and build civilizations. Why would a random explosion give us so many gifts? Wouldn't all that make it seem like God is real?

Yes, of course there are kenny.

Have you ever considered how contradictory the idea of a hell is with the idea that god is all powerful, all loving, and all knowing?
obmitty1 3 years ago

CAN'T YOU SEE IT MAKES NO SENSE!?
obmitty1 3 years ago
They weren't created to spend eternity in hell. God isn't going to let people who didn't believe in him in life get a free ticket while others had to have faith. Do you find it fair that some people may get to kill, steal, curse, hate, and basically sin their entire life and just end up in heaven because God loves them? God wouldn't kill Satan because if he wasn't there, there would be no place for the non-believers. See what I'm saying?

Kenny, god also created sinners, murderers, rapists, paedophiles DID HE NOT?
He knew what they were going to do before the dust he made them from was created DID HE NOT?
He therefore created them to spend an eternity in hell, and presumably a few years messing up earth before hand.
It doesn't make sense!!
obmitty1 3 years ago
People make the choice to go to hell like you did. God figured some would follow and some would refuse to believe. So he also created people who would go to Heaven. Anybody can make the choice to go to Heaven or hell. People make the choice to sin. I sin all the time. I will not lie to you. I've lied. I've cursed. I watch shows God wouldn't find appropriate but if I repent of those sins, I will be worthy of making it into Heaven. You just have to pray each day and ask for forgiveness.
Kenny2k08 3 years ago
"People make the choice to go to hell like you did."
You clearly aren't getting this... God always new who would not follow, so the people he created that he already new would not follow he created to go to hell... So therefore he could never have loved them.
This fairy story just doesn't hold water!
obmitty1 3 years ago
No. People can make the choice. You could make it right now easily. I don't see why not but whatever.
Kenny2k08 3 years ago
I will try again. Concentrate now Kenny:
You believe God created us to sit an exam. You pass by being good and loving him, and fail by not doing so. YES?
God is also omniscient: he knows everything about everything past and future. YES?
A billion years ago he knew I would be having this discussion with you YES? He knew that I would not believe in him, and therefore he knew I will go to hell.
He therefore created me knowing I would spend eternity in hell, YES?????
obmitty1 3 years ago
He didn't create you so you could go to hell. You could easily become a Christian right now. It's not anything difficult. It's not even worthy of being called an exam. It's more like a question: Will you believe in the almighty creator or suffer in hell for eternity?
Kenny2k08 3 years ago
here lemme start, in the bible jesus is asked about babies and people born without Christianity go back read what he says, copy and past it if you feel like looking like a zealot again(a really bad one at that) the contradictions in the bible are the reasons for several splits in the church since the conception of the church, do you even know what sect u are?MR the bible has no contradictions?

Of course, you're probably going to come up with something like "God would send a believer to hell?!" That could be true. I'm not too sure yet but I repent each day just in case.
Kenny2k08 3 years ago
"I'm not too sure yet but I repent each day just in case"
Bad news Kenny, god can probably see through you hedging your bets! I will see you in hell then if you're right!
obmitty1 3 years ago
Okay then but I'm highly doubting that I will end up in hell considering I'm trying to tell other people about God.
Kenny2k08 3 years ago
Yeah, but you're doing that "just in case". God is going to beat your ass for trying to play him like a game of risk.
obmitty1 3 years ago 2
1. we're all sinners.
2. you could still repent before you die. even you don't know exactly what you're life will be like 10 years from now, let alone tomorrow.
3. God looks at the heart; your motives.
4. The only way you'll go to Hell is if you don't truly accept God's free Gift which is Christ dying on the cross for our sins.
5. You can theorize all you want, but you'll never be able to size God down into a pre-fab theological box.

Actually if you ask a Muslim, you're going to hell for what you believe, and there is not a scrap of evidence to suggest who is right, only your own baseless assertion verses there baseless assertion.
obmitty1 3 years ago
oh...so that's why Jesus is the only One who has risen from the dead AND that He is the only One whom you can't visit a grave site? True, if you asked a Muslim that that would be true, but you're not asking a Muslim are you?
VicFirthDrummer21 3 years ago
Vic, there are several other gods in different religions who have stories about death and resurrection, its far from a unique christian claim. Krishna, Mythra, Odin and others.
My overall point is that all you have is a book of stories written decades after the alleged events by people who had a lot to gain by writing them, and that is also all that other religions have.
Still, I'm sure it helps you feel safe and perhaps approved of by your peers, but it doesn't make it true.

so what other book like The Bible has been proved to have no contradictions for over 2000 years?
VicFirthDrummer21 3 years ago
Ha! No contradictions? The bible screams with contradictions.
