@BrenieB not sure... i joined the Hac in August 82 and saw a Smiths gig but I think the one after this one - more flowers... Was a Hac regular from 82 to summer 87 (when it started to get full!).
I was absolutely at this gig. But that's because I'm Morrissey. And I spotted EVERYONE who didn't cheer. You're all in my red book. The one I use to record people who DON'T CLAP.
@LewisKiernan it may have a bit to do with the audio mixing. unlike on most live recordings, the volume audience noise is very low. that's not to say the audience wasn't a bit quieter than usual, but to give the impression that it was like a morgue in there would be false.
Mr Marrs playing on Handsome Devil is exemplory. As is everybody else's on every other song in this set. Tight little outfit. What ever happened to them? I can taste chlorine. Long ago municipal swimming pools. What am I blathering on about?
Six months down the line people were going spastic at Smiths gigs, see the footage from the Derby Assembly Rooms that was filmed for the Whistle Test at the end of the year. But here it's still so subdued.
Mind you, the Hacienda was a white elephant of a place until some bright spark decided to let a few DJs play that funny 'house' music, and the rest as they say...
Actually, I think the video sound is directly off the soundboard, reducing the audience noise. Remember, this was only their 14th gig, their first headlining show, and is really before the Smiths were anything big. The first single had only just been released, and the place was far from packed.
This was my second Smiths gig, I had been at Warwick University the week before, primarily to see Aztec Camera.
saw them at the electric ballroom in birmingham in late 83 or early 84, i was just turned 20. where did the years go...... >sobs<.
