I think the keeper of the prison was afraid for his life (at the very least, he would surely loose his job and may never work again...) when he asked what he needed to do to be saved, Paul and Silas saw it as an opportunity to teach the Gospel.
can you imagine how difficult it must have been to be in captivity, completely alone and in pain.....and yet to look to God. To sing praises and pray continually. Truly, there is not a place on Earth that we cannot reach for His everreaching hand, and feel happiness, peace, hope. No matter how bleak our circumstances are, we are never alone.

Interesting how evil was seen for good and also how a missionary opportunity arose from such a circumstance. The Lord works in mysterious ways.
