this is a malaysian style pumpkin soup. we usually use pumpkin, lemongrass, coconut milk, turmeric powder, black peppercorns, dried shrimp, red chillies, bird's eyes chillies, onion, garlic, salt and sugar. blended or not blended both are fine.
Hey Julia, I know you said the jack o'lantern pumpkins werent very nice, but I make a lovely soup using these. I cook the way you did and I add onion, fresh garlic, 5 carrots (grated) and mixed peppers with vegetable stock, and salt and plenty of pepper seasoned with thyme and parsley. Then blend, like you did, its lovely, my kids loved it.
Yummie that looks so good! I will make this for sure and let you know how good it was...I allready know it's good. Amazing ingredients...the oranges what a good idea. Thank you so much for sharing. xxx
I just made this and I put two chili peppers into it, but it turned out to be way too hot for me:( Next time I'll try it with very very little, cause otherwise it tastes good.
Just out of curiosity - why did you peel the pumpkin after it'd been in the oven, rather than scooping out the softer flesh inside? I think I saw Gordon Ramsey scoop it out once, and it made it was less messy. Does that type of pumpkin take longer cooking to soften up the fleshy stuff inside? Realllly want to try this recipe before halloween :) xxx
I make a similar soup with canned pumpkin. Comes out great and not nearly as much work. No baking, peeling or pureeing. Well, I do have little pieces of onion and spices in the soup, if I do not puree it. I am sure that your's tastes much better than the canned pumpkin. Love your videos.
Planning on cooking a pumpkin soup next week! I wonder why you say that normal pumpkins don't taste good, though? Isn't most traditional pies and soups made from the large orange pumpkins? That's what I've always used, anyway... also, I'm a bit skeptical of adding the orange juice to this recipe, it seems a tad odd. Can you describe the final flavour?
Ich studiere jetzt in Deutschland und es ist mir ganz lustig wie wir in der Küche meines Wohnheims Geschirr haben, das ich auch hier gesehen habe. Die Reibe zum Beispiel. :)
I *just* made this soup and am eating it right now! To anyone thinking of making this, please do. It's sooo delicious. (I didn't add the chilis because I'm a lightweight, so it'll be great for those of you with more sensitive taste buds too).
The pumpkin you are using is a Hokaido! And you can actually eat the skin!! :) For other pumkins try a "Sparschäler"(whatever that's in english..), I think that works fine.
When I make pumkin soup I just cut it up into small pieces and cook it which goes a lot faster than baking it! I add vegetable stock, Curry and Coconut milk and mix/blend it! Done in 30 minutes :D
The white topping that's on the soup in the beginning of the video looks like a person with there arm out and a bird sitting on there right shoulder lol. At least that's what it looks like to me.
I love soup! Please share more soup recipes if you can. I'm going to try this if I can find a hokkaido pumpkin. If I can't find one I guess I might try with acorn squash. Thanks for the inspiration.
this is a hokkaido Pumpkin that you don t have to peel....that s the good thing about those :) i always make my soop with a hokkaido, BECAUSE i don thave to peel it. nice recipe :)
I looove your citrus juicer! I want one! I also love when you do these videos. I can't wait to see what you make next! It get really hard to eat fresh and healthy through the winter. Hopefully your recipes with will help! :)
Love these videos! Quick question though. I have a very limited range of food- I can only have certain fruits, no veggies, chicken, and turkey. Do you have any suggestions as to eating healthy with such a limited diet? By the way I have crohns disease which is why my food is so limited!
Oh my gosh! Who in the heck goes to cooking videos and dislikes them?? If you don't like pumpkin soup don't watch how to make it and don't eat it, those 5 people need to grow up!
OMG that looks SO good! I definitely want to try this! I just took my son pumpkin picking and like a jerk I threw away the outside of the pumpkin once we picked out the seeds! how stupid! :(
Well, I'll have to pick up another one. I want to try this for sure...
@MissTamTamPrincess sieht aus wie Hokkaido. Der muss aber nicht geschält werden, das backen kann man sich also getrost sparen und nur den rohen Kürbis mit Schale klein schneiden und kochen.
