I'm new to gymnastics these are the real olympic games not trials right? So how come if they are a national team (im assuming) then how come they don't wear USA uniforms?
@pandaxseal3 Gymnasts from the same team have to wear the same leotards in the team finals and I think there's a deduction if they don't. But this is the all-around finals were the gymnasts compete individually, they can were the same uniforms if they want but they don't have to
I'm NOT saying that she was better than Nastia or that Nastia did not deserve the gold because she totally did but I wish Shawn was the winner of these finals
@ichao924 It's called spotting. If she were to fall, she could injure herself badly - even get paralyzed. The spotter is there during tricky moments and can catch her if something were to happen.
I think that she was just a little underscored on floor just because she has a higher start value and a good execution. I'm not saying she should've won though, because Nastia was amazing that night.
International judges or not, the complaints do have merit. As Bela said during the AA on NBC, when the judges are scoring in a system where the viewers cannot follow nor comprehend then the sport has lost part of its appeal. If you look at the performances from the qualifiers to the team to the AA to individual you will see some very odd scores where a better performance is scored lower than one with some slight mistakes.... =\
She could not have performed that floor routine any better.Great attitude and GREAT performance! A smile the whole way and talk about DELIVERY under pressure. Proud that she represents USA, hope to see her in London 2012!
On bars,Liukin had late turn, leg separation all over, and EXCESSIVE bent legs.she cowboy her double front dimount, the judges never took the deduction that should be taken.Liukin also has little power and height on her vault. On beam, she connects skills with snail-speed to get less deduction. On 2007 worlds beam final, I'm very sure that she had a MAJOR wable and still won.On floor,Liukin always crosses her leg to make them look like scissors, each one should take 0.3 deduction, but NONE was taken.
@Planetimage2 what are you talking about she got more than a full point of in execution on bars...like an 8.9 for bars. she got the score because her difficulty is through the roof.

No offense to any of you Shawn-lovers,but Nastia deserved the gold. She stuck her dismounts on vault and beam and her opening pass on floor. She's been on the international scene since 2004-05 and Shawn's only been since 2007. But just to make it fair(because, lets face it, i love Shawn too), Shawn won all- around titles in US Nats in 2007and 2008, plus the Pan American Games in 2007 and 2007 Worlds.

No. It was definitely NOT one of the best AA battles in Olympics history :/
There have been Olympics where numerous gymnasts could have won and it was literally down to perfection. If you want a battle of two then Gutsu and Miller far trumps Johnson and Liukin.
Wait until 2012!

@Gr33nkiwi That's all a matter of opinion. I agree that Miller & Gutsu had a great battle, but you go back and read my post & you'll notice I said "one of the greatest" Not THE best hands down. Nastia vs Shawn in '08 certainly ranks up there with any other duo in the AA @ the Olympics. Either one of them could have won it, just like Miller & Gutsu could have won or Retton & Szabo, Silivas & Shush. Now, the entire AA field was not as deep as some Olympics but the battle for gold was impressive.
Anyone who knew gymnastics knew that Nastia would win in a final situation. Shawn is a horribly messy gymnast; fine for qualifications but once the true judging comes in the finals she's done. I'm still mortified she won beam with her 'leaps.'
I simply don't understand why Johnson only trained 4-5 hours a day. Was she that sure that she was gonna win anyways? If she had put in 2-3 extra hours a day to work on flexibility/artistry and her uneven bars, she probably really would have been the AA champion. I hope she learns from this for 2012.
Shawn is the best, I think the judges was wrong, Nastia only win the all around, and Shawn was better than Nastia in the floor rutine and tje beam. I love Shawn Johnson
I myself am a gymnast and i look up to shawn very much (not literally cuz she's short haha). but doesnt it seem like she kinda has a habit of stepping out on her landings?

Man... it still amazing me the line divided by gymnastics fans: either it's all about artistry or it's all about power. Gymnastics is the glorious marriage of both, and yes some gymnasts are the epitome of grace (Nasita, Nadia, Onodi, Silivas, Mo) and some are great at huge skills (Johnson, Shushunova, Amanar, Tweddle, Asac) and some do both (Podkopayeva, Raducan, Dobre,) but that all encompass the sport. I guess it's about preference, but still. To me, what makes a gymnast is their consistency
@ gymnast41713 If Shawn was the best gymnast in the world, she would have wone the AA in Beijing. I do like her and wish her the best for London, yes, but I have to agree with another poster - the field is getting much stronger and when she's 4 years older, Shawn will be even less flexible than she already was. She might win a few medals in the Event Finals, but there is no way she's gonna get the AA gold this time, when she couldn't get it last time.
I don't understand why Shawn didn't upgrade her bar. Bar is the apparatus that gives most gymnasts like Yang Yilin and Nastia an edge in AA, more importantly in team competition.
If Shawn couldn't win at her peak in this weak field she won't win in 2012 where there is a stronger field, a code more focused on artistry, and 3-4 inches on her body.
Shawn was not overscored. She had high difficulty and good execution even though she made mistakes. Shawn is way more clean than Nastia on the twisting, or even she actually pointed her toes, thing that Nastia forgot lots of time. I would have prefer to see Shan for the gold among the two of them ( my favorite is Pavlova) but Shawn got the score that she diserved !
if shawn and nastia(maybe?) comback like some plan and do what they're capable, then other olympic hopefuls are gonna have their hearts broken. In that case, i believe the team will consist of Alicia Sacramone, Shawn Johnson, Nastia Liukin, Rebecca Bross, and Jordyn Weiber.
@chicagoguy19 they can only take 5 this olympics. in all honesty, the 2012 trials and nationals are gonna be the best ever. There are so many good juniors who don't turn 16 till next year, then there's Mattie Larson, Kytra Hunter, Ivana Hong (if she gets healthy), all the veterans making comebacks. Team USA just needs some great bar workers who can do one more event. Its just those Russian juniors we have to worry about cuz no one knows what china has up their sleeves until the olympic year
@Lenae6292 Rebecca Bross probably won't make the Olympic cut if Nastia and Shawn return. She's inconsistent and her scores aren't high enough. I think Bridget Sloan will make it and Bross might be an alternate.
@mrkendallmarshall the way i've seen the recent world championships and the upcoming juniors eligible for 2012, i think that if they stay healthy, my 5 would probably change to Jordyn Weiber, Kayla Ross, Mckayla maroney (who can probably upgrade to a triple yurchenko vault), Alexandra Raisman, and some comeback person (alicia, nastia, shawn, or bridget) bross has a great floor and beam score, but the juniors outshine her, good bars, but i think the mckayla vault will overlook that score.
@Lenae6292 We'll just have to see who brings what these next few years. It Alicia, Nastia, and Shawn train hard enough and get back to where they were they will all make it. Bridget's still competeing so she and Mattie Larson and Ivana need to get healthy and we'll have a good team.
Honestly the aa title was hers to win or lose. She lost by what 6 tenths.... Her vault scored .125 lower then she could have scored at the games. On bars, yes she stuck her dismount, but she missed a few handstands and her release moves were super close to the bar. On beam she had an off day. And on floor her sv was .2 less then what she was planning on. Of both of them hit it would have been a very tight competition. Nastia hit that day an Shawn had an off day.
fans of shawn johnson r just jealous tht nastia won the gold in the all around and theyre just making lame excuses about it...i luv shawn but nastia deserved the medal
@greyskies34 agrred 2 b fair it cuda been eiver of them they are both equally as talented and have different strentghs it all came down to who delivered on the day and at the point was nastia as it was 4 shawn on the beam
agrred 2 b fair it cuda been eiver of them they are both equally as talented and have different strentghs it all came down to who delivered on the day and at the point was nastia as it was 4 shawn on the beam
In my opinion, it was obviously better for Shawn to take the cross over step on vault then the big step forward because with the cross step in TF it gave her a 16.000 but in the AA it gave her a 15.875.
did the code of points change between the usa olympics trials and the olympics because at trials shawn scored over 16 on floor and she said in her all around it was probably the best floor routine she ever did and she tied with nastia with a 15.525 i mean come on shawn does way harder passes?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
@gymnastgirllyy gipped on floor? Her floor score in the AA was her highest of the Games and allowed her to pass Yilin for the silver. I am not sure what you were expecting.
Artistic or not, you have to admire her for doing a full-twisting double back for her last tumbling line since a lot of gymnasts use it as their mount.
I think they were truly about equal on the night. Shawn's usually stronger but Nastia really pulled it out for AA. I think their performances were equal, but weren't judged as such (Nastia bit underscored on vault, and overscored on bars and floor; Shawn underscored heavily on bars and underscored on floor). They both have such different strengths but great execution that it seems as if the judges just liked Nastia's style better, which was a shame for Shawn. I think they should have tied.
@MaebySurelyBarely you have to realize this sport is called ARTISTIC gymnastics. A-R-T-I-S-T-I-C. Shawn was ALWAYS overscored in the US because the judges here do not take the correct deductions for lack of basic flexibility and artistry, whereas the Olympic judges were more strict and took the CORRECT deductions. there shouldn't of been any tie, Nastia owned that night and won fair and square.
@comanecisalto1 She showed he best flexibility in this. She did amazing. Nastia could not keep from crossing her legs in all her twisting elements. That should be the same amount of deduction.
@comanecisalto1 I agree with you that Nastia deserved to win, and she won fairly etc. BUT I think that artistry is objective, and shawn's perfect execution of incredibly difficult skills is art. Nobody does it like her, and she makes it look easy. Nastia definitely performed better that night, but they're just different gymnasts.
@comanecisalto1 No matter about that. This is a girl that can do many things that others cannot do and so can nastia but i have a question. did nastia get 1st on floor in beijing or who did shawn i can't remember?
@Manutdcailin, not in the All Around. It was Liukin, Johnson, and Yang for the top 3. Izbasa came in 8th. I think you're thinking of the individual event floor final.
@comanecisalto1 And you do realize artistry is not only about long legs and ballerina wannabe ? Shawn is artistic, she has her own artistry, it's not slow and graceful but she tries and she has her own choregraphy. One gymnast who was absolutely NOT artistix on FX: Sacramone. Watch both of it and u will see Shawn IS artistic and has a good choreography for her body type. BTW gymnastics is not only about artistry, it's also about tricks and technique and Shawn is faaaar better than Nastia
@comanecisalto1 i'd like to add to your comment by mentioning that on day 2 of the visa championships, nastia was scored higher than shawn and both were essentially error-free.
@comanecisalto1 - Shawn did a great job - she does huge stuff. But Natia did such a captivating job that night that Shawn could have done a triple back and it wouldn't have made a difference.
@MaebySurelyBarely your accessment is far out of touch with reality. Nastia was underscored on vault and bars. Shawn was overscored on vault, she was lucky her Amanar didnt get downgraded in fact, and scored a bit high on floor if anything. As it was Shawn had a slightly higher B score on bars than Nastia, yet you think it should have been much higher, LOL! So Shawn has much better execution on bars than Nastia now, please.
@russianskatingfan Yes, Nastia was slightly overscored on vault. The reason Shawn's Amanar wasn't downgraded was because she technically round 2.5 twists because as she comes onto the vaulting table, she's twisted the opposite way from the way she twist off of it, meaning that to land with her feet facing opposite the vault, she would have done more like 2.7 twists. (look at the slow motion, she twists counter clockwise onto the vault and clockwise off).
@russianskatingfan On bars, Nastia should have had much more deductions than Shawn. I'll explain to you in a private message, because this commenting section isn't about Nastia.
@russianskatingfan Nastia vas not underscored on VT and was certainly not on bars, she was even OVERscored. Shawn on the other hand was scored pretty fairly. Nastia was overscored on FX as well, serisously same D score than Shawn with that horrible twisting and cowboying ??? And when Shawn is MUCH better on bars, Nastia has bent legs everywhere, leg separations, late pirouettes sometimes, her dismount. Being good on bars is not only about difficulty
@Missnewyork28 I agree. Shawn was wayyyyy underscored on bars. She was exact, had a flawless dismount, unlike Nastia, and landed upright. Nastia had form everywhere and just an ugly horrible performed dismount with no landing.
2008: The Year of the Two Best AA Gymnasts Ever, Shawn and Nastia. IT all came down to who had the most perfect night, and Nastia was just a teeny bit more perfect. Regardless of scores, the placement was right that night.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
On this day, Shawn was amazing; she got robbed, in my opinion, those fucking judges, they knew at this point it was impossible to keep helping Jang Yilin, so they decided, "well, let's go with Nastia"! errr!
Nastia deserved the medal she got, but I just feel as if Nastia was a bit overscored and Shawn a bit underscored (especially on bars - where did they find over a point of execution deductions for Shawn?)
i like shawn soo much better, no effence to nastia but she seems stuck up and fake, she never smiles and being nervous isnt a excuse shawn is seems nicer and is always happy! i like nastias bar routine but to me i think the chinese gymnast bar routines are better there are more cooler skills !
i think both deserved to win. it's not really the medal or the score that counts (for me). it's the honour that they bring to their country. that's why athletes compete in international competitions. it's not for themselves but for the country they represent. :)
shawn should of gotten a .1 higher on vault .150 higher on bars .100 or .125 higher on beam and .150 or .175 higher on floor and liukin should of gotten .200 or .150 lower on bars and maybe .075 higher on vault all in all shawn should of won
I wonder what its like to be so good at something :/ i sucked at everything i did

Yea, sure. Keep dreaming your delusional dreams.
If Shawn couldn't win at her peak in this weak field she won't win in 2012 where there is a stronger field, a code more focused on artistry, and 3-4 inches on her body.

elishamc13 1 year ago
It's true that Shawn is not one of the most graceful gymnasts, I mean that she is more technical. But still a very good gymnast.
Searchingxmyxway 1 year ago
Shawn was not overscored. She had high difficulty and good execution even though she made mistakes. Shawn is way more clean than Nastia on the twisting, or even she actually pointed her toes, thing that Nastia forgot lots of time. I would have prefer to see Shan for the gold among the two of them ( my favorite is Pavlova) but Shawn got the score that she diserved !
Missnewyork28 1 year ago
Sometimes I wonder if it was her lack of flexibility and that little bobble on the back full on beam that lost her the gold. Not that silver is bad!
gabriellesgirl 1 year ago
She barely ade it all around on her vault.
randelperfect10 1 year ago
@omarieswifey shawn and nastia are both great but shawn was not the strongest and most solid that day she wobbled on the beam

I love both of them but Johnson should've won..she was SOLID and very strong and powerful...I love her style
omarieswifey 1 year ago
if shawn and nastia(maybe?) comback like some plan and do what they're capable, then other olympic hopefuls are gonna have their hearts broken. In that case, i believe the team will consist of Alicia Sacramone, Shawn Johnson, Nastia Liukin, Rebecca Bross, and Jordyn Weiber.
Lenae6292 1 year ago
@Lenae6292 you cant forget reigning world champion bridget sloan
chicagoguy19 1 year ago
@chicagoguy19 they can only take 5 this olympics. in all honesty, the 2012 trials and nationals are gonna be the best ever. There are so many good juniors who don't turn 16 till next year, then there's Mattie Larson, Kytra Hunter, Ivana Hong (if she gets healthy), all the veterans making comebacks. Team USA just needs some great bar workers who can do one more event. Its just those Russian juniors we have to worry about cuz no one knows what china has up their sleeves until the olympic year
Lenae6292 1 year ago
@Lenae6292 Rebecca Bross probably won't make the Olympic cut if Nastia and Shawn return. She's inconsistent and her scores aren't high enough. I think Bridget Sloan will make it and Bross might be an alternate.
mrkendallmarshall 1 year ago
@mrkendallmarshall the way i've seen the recent world championships and the upcoming juniors eligible for 2012, i think that if they stay healthy, my 5 would probably change to Jordyn Weiber, Kayla Ross, Mckayla maroney (who can probably upgrade to a triple yurchenko vault), Alexandra Raisman, and some comeback person (alicia, nastia, shawn, or bridget) bross has a great floor and beam score, but the juniors outshine her, good bars, but i think the mckayla vault will overlook that score.
Lenae6292 1 year ago

Nastia hit that day an Shawn had an off day.

well nastias score was way close shawns especially for nastias lower difficulty
gymnastgirllyy 1 year ago
In my opinion, it was obviously better for Shawn to take the cross over step on vault then the big step forward because with the cross step in TF it gave her a 16.000 but in the AA it gave her a 15.875.
TwisterFlipp95 1 year ago
did the code of points change between the usa olympics trials and the olympics because at trials shawn scored over 16 on floor and she said in her all around it was probably the best floor routine she ever did and she tied with nastia with a 15.525 i mean come on shawn does way harder passes?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
ShawnJohnson8808 1 year ago
i feel like shawn got gipped on floor, but nastia did deserve it totally
gymnastgirllyy 1 year ago
@gymnastgirllyy gipped on floor? Her floor score in the AA was her highest of the Games and allowed her to pass Yilin for the silver. I am not sure what you were expecting.
russianskatingfan 1 year ago 6

MaebySurelyBarely 2 years ago
@MaebySurelyBarely nastia was not underscore on vault.
bunnierabbits 1 year ago 2
@MaebySurelyBarely you have to realize this sport is called ARTISTIC gymnastics. A-R-T-I-S-T-I-C. Shawn was ALWAYS overscored in the US because the judges here do not take the correct deductions for lack of basic flexibility and artistry, whereas the Olympic judges were more strict and took the CORRECT deductions. there shouldn't of been any tie, Nastia owned that night and won fair and square.
comanecisalto1 1 year ago 37
@comanecisalto1 She showed he best flexibility in this. She did amazing. Nastia could not keep from crossing her legs in all her twisting elements. That should be the same amount of deduction.
lisapizza16 1 year ago
@comanecisalto1 I agree with you that Nastia deserved to win, and she won fairly etc. BUT I think that artistry is objective, and shawn's perfect execution of incredibly difficult skills is art. Nobody does it like her, and she makes it look easy. Nastia definitely performed better that night, but they're just different gymnasts.

Missnewyork28 1 year ago
@comanecisalto naa dont agree
leworthy4severs 11 months ago
@comanecisalto1 i'd like to add to your comment by mentioning that on day 2 of the visa championships, nastia was scored higher than shawn and both were essentially error-free.
zhangshinyi 10 months ago
@comanecisalto1 - Shawn did a great job - she does huge stuff. But Natia did such a captivating job that night that Shawn could have done a triple back and it wouldn't have made a difference.
legalglitz 10 months ago
@MaebySurelyBarely your accessment is far out of touch with reality. Nastia was underscored on vault and bars. Shawn was overscored on vault, she was lucky her Amanar didnt get downgraded in fact, and scored a bit high on floor if anything. As it was Shawn had a slightly higher B score on bars than Nastia, yet you think it should have been much higher, LOL! So Shawn has much better execution on bars than Nastia now, please.
russianskatingfan 1 year ago 12
@russianskatingfan Yes, Nastia was slightly overscored on vault. The reason Shawn's Amanar wasn't downgraded was because she technically round 2.5 twists because as she comes onto the vaulting table, she's twisted the opposite way from the way she twist off of it, meaning that to land with her feet facing opposite the vault, she would have done more like 2.7 twists. (look at the slow motion, she twists counter clockwise onto the vault and clockwise off).
MaebySurelyBarely 1 year ago
@MaebySurelyBarely pshh no she wasnt how was nastia overscored? plz tell me the deductions
greyskies34 1 year ago
@russianskatingfan On bars, Nastia should have had much more deductions than Shawn. I'll explain to you in a private message, because this commenting section isn't about Nastia.
MaebySurelyBarely 1 year ago
@russianskatingfan Nastia vas not underscored on VT and was certainly not on bars, she was even OVERscored. Shawn on the other hand was scored pretty fairly. Nastia was overscored on FX as well, serisously same D score than Shawn with that horrible twisting and cowboying ??? And when Shawn is MUCH better on bars, Nastia has bent legs everywhere, leg separations, late pirouettes sometimes, her dismount. Being good on bars is not only about difficulty
Missnewyork28 1 year ago
@Missnewyork28 I agree. Shawn was wayyyyy underscored on bars. She was exact, had a flawless dismount, unlike Nastia, and landed upright. Nastia had form everywhere and just an ugly horrible performed dismount with no landing.
rachelandtessa1 10 months ago
@russianskatingfan shawn DOES have much better execution than Nastia on bars.
