Yeah, I was planning on a male this time anyway. But I had a friend whos life was made quite miserable by her two spayed female dogs. They hated each other and really hurt each other one day before she was able to split them up. She ended up having to split her backyard into two fenced areas and had to spend time with each one seperately.
Yes, I have a 13 lb standard rat terrier, and little Sprite is now around 38 lbs. Sprite's momma is 43 lbs. That's a lot of Rat. They are like a regular rat in a lot of ways, but they have a better nose (some beagle in the mix) and Sprite yodels and yowls instead of barking (basenji in the mix). They are more aloof than the regular rat too...
This is what Sheila from Kenann country in Georgia just told me. Hers are more the type a standard rat terrier. Which is probably more what I am looking for. While I am not a neophyte dog owner, I would be to the rat terrier specifically. I have an 8 year old boxer/ pit bull terrier mix, I have had since she was 6 wks old and she is a wonderful, intelligent dog that was easy to train and loves to please. Thank you so much for commenting back and helping me with my decision for our future pup.
CaseyinCary - please do not get a female dog if you already have a female - get a male. As a dog trainer the worst aggression I see is in a house with multiple female dogs, so don't set yourself up for that potential issue. Get a boy.
Hi there. I am to get two Decker rat terriers babies myself, probably next year and I have been talking with Kim at Seegmiller's too. Do you feel they are a good breeder and are you happy with your pup?
I like my dog from Kim, but a Decker is not a breed to own trivially - they need a lot of work when young - not for neophyte dog owners. I would also never, ever, get two pups of any breed at once, I find neither dog gets enough training and socialization this way. Get a pup, wait two years, get the next.
Love this! I have a Decker Rattie, Sweet Te", who is IT in our lives!!
