Kennywood has made a lot of bad decisions in the past regarding it's rides. Some examples are turning the Old Mill into Garfield's Nightmare, The Gold Rusher into Ghostwood Estates, and now the removal of the Pitt Fall.
check out this video - it's a video recorded in 1998 of a bunch of rides at kennywood, towards the end, there is a small clip thats just the lines and cars of le cachot... check it out... watch?v=dOqdZzMxvZw&feature=related
Why is everything so much better in the past!?!?! Great amusement park rides... Great music... Great tv.... Great movies... The music, TV and movies i can always find online, but i will never be able to ride kennywood's great old rides....
@DCGamingVideos I agree 100% with you. I would have to include video games too. There are too many re-makes nowadays and they have run out of ideas for good stuff.
I vividly remember this ride, particularly the green lady leaning outta the window and the skeletons behind the bars. I was like 6 when they took it out and I never rode it. I kick myself every time I think about it. I was a skiddish and easily frightened kid, but if it woulda lasted a few more years I woulda been all over it. Thanks so much for finally allowing me to see its interior, though no I'm even more pissed at my self for not riding it when I had the chance :(
I have very few memories of this ride unfortunately. I remember going on it once or twice with my mom. The other memories I have are of standing near the Potato Patch (I think..maybe the Turtles..) and looking to my right and being able to see the green-faced lady bend out of the castle and then go back up. That's all I can remember :(
I used to operate this ride (and the Gold Rusher and Turtle) in the mid-90s. I was so sad to see it go! I still look at the area it once was and miss it. It was classic Kennywood - old, quirky rides mixed with the new. :)
I OWN A PROP FROM THIS RIDE, I HAVE THE BOAT WITH THE 2 FISHING SKELETONS IN IT, DOES ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE HAVE ANY OF THE OTHER GREAT PROPS FROM THIS RIDE???.
@keannakaminski12 Do you know where the Gold Rusher was? It's Ghostwood Estate now, but the Le Cachot was back to back with the Gold Rusher, next to The Thunderbolt.
Fear not dark ride fans! The ride was NOT destroyed at Bushkill park... the building was.... but the ten cars and the track CAN be saved. I know this because I now own this ride. I've been collecting Pretzel rides in order to save them from vanishing into history. My web page is sinistershadows .... click on my face book page and you can see us picking up the ride 4/10/2010.... I'll keep her safe till it's time for her to run again!
@yorkmiss wow really? cuz i love the le cachot..... well plz keep a fellow pittsburgher posted whenever u get it up and running again (or something of that nature)
I remember this ride and it was pretty cool as you can see. The only bad thing about it was that the cars whipped around so violently that it wasn't uncommon for people to get hurt.
I miss this ride, and the old mill. The only good 'scary' ride is Ghostwood Estate but I really wish they didn't tare down this ride it makes me sad even though I don't remember much of it since I was little but still
the ride did not burn down, they were removing the ride offseason and a fire caught inside that did very little damage. this is where the confusion lies..... but the ride did not burn down. thank you
I remember this! I just remember you sat in a chair that moved through the ride and I specifically remember the strobe lights that would flash in one room with a black and white checkered floor...I wish they would bring it back!
I never heard about this ride until I read about it from Laff in the Dark. They have an article of ride (also included in the Bill Tracy article) I regret not going on this ride even once! From the photo's I've seen the stunts I would have like are: sentry, dragon, prisoner, the execution, the sorceress, and probably the snake with the peace symbol.
nooo, that would be where the potato patch now is. and noahs ark's current look is the old look. the whales mouth was something new, then they decided to go back to the original look.
I always liked walking past this ride. I only rode it once and that was in 1998 Le Cachot's last season, I was so scared. I remember, the amazing fascade, the cars noise, the moving skeletons in the station, a few stunts inside, and the strobe light room. It was a great ride. Today, this remains one of my favorite Kennywood memories. Kennywood should bring back a classic pretzel dark ride.
I was much more disappointed with the renovations of The Old Mill and Noah's Ark, however.
The mill was my favorite ride. The unique facade really enhanced the overall experience of entering the historic park. The new ride is mundane and hardly worth riding.
As for Noah's Ark, the effort was much better, but there is a lot to be said for the old fashioned fun house with no lines and no groups of people where you just walk through at your own pace. I guess thats a thing of the past...
I loved le chachot! However, I understand why it would be torn down: it wasn't a main attraction and probably was expensive to maintain. I just hope it was moved somewhere where it can be appreciated. That facade was absolutely incredible and it seems a shame that they couldn't incorporate it elsewhere in the park. The new dark ride is better, no doubt, but I will always miss the monsters at the beginning, the loud hiss of the cars, and the overall 'feel' of a old fashioned dark ride!
I remember as a kid how much this ride freaked me out, had such an odd scariness to it but it was simple and comical as well. As far as scary rides go the worst thing there now is the beginning of noah's ark, its pathetic! That or the lady at the train. I loved a good scary ride. And I agree with those of you that feel theyre steering away from the historical feel that park has. Not many parks have that nice history. I dont recall many six flags in the late 1800's.
it was torn down to put in a bathroom and a drink stall and half the time the drink stall is closed. what they should do is retheme the old mill into a remake of the ghost ship dark ride and not hire a company who will make it "more suitable for everyone" buy using cheap props and nonscary monsters. they should use the origional blueprits for ghost ship
Hard to believe Kennywood was designated a national historic landmark in 1987. Since then, Noahs Ark has had a needless makeover, The Old Mill is a joke with its Garfield theme, and Le Cachot and the Goldrusher are now a pleasant memory. Ill still go, if only for the three wooden coasters, but its a shame that this park, once the antithesis of theme park could so completely forsake its roots. Preserving whats left of ones past should no longer be an option. It ought to be a necessity.
I agree, they should keep the really classic rides... same goes for the old mill, they took out all the cool skeleton models and replaced them with stupid cardboard cutouts of garfield.
@dugbug75 Stupid people make these decisions lol Obviously. And I bet the people who decide to get rid of them, decide to put in stupid crap like Garfield's Nightmare
I used to work at Kennywood as well and never heard of any fire. I think they just wanted to add more food. Plus not to mention they also closed the Gold Rush down at the same time. The rides were getting old so a change had to be made.
i worked there the the last year it was there and there afterwards.. next to it at the potato patch.. so sad to see it go. but as with everything, change is inevitable.
This was such a cool ride....it just had that classic amusement park feeling...I loved the dragon that snorted an air burst in your face and the black and white checkered flashing room at the end.......I'd take kennywood over ANY of the modern day parks......
Man, I've been looking for pics and vids from this ride for soooo freaking long. I kept saying it and spelling it the wrong way. I was 10 years old when I first went to Kennywood and this was my favorite ride. We went back a few years later and I was so bummed out that it was gone. I begged my parents to let me ride that ride first and my parents didn't remember it and thought I was crazy. I took them to where it was so I could show them and it was gone. I was like "It was right here!!!".
Great pics- thanks for sharing, I still expect to turn that corner from the thunderbolt and see this ride. I miss those great big red seats. It was a neat ride. I was surprised to see it go. Not so much the goldrusher, as it was barley ridden toward the end of its time, but why they took this one is a mystery to me. Anywa, thanks :)
I have a prop from the le cachot ride, i have the boat with the 2 fishing skeletons that rock back and forth. cool to see them in a picture in the ride.....
cool! how much did you pay for them and where did you get them??? I remember those! I got a picture of them actually, then the guy jumped on the back of our car and yelled at us. LOL
i LOVEDDDD this ride. i think about it everytime i go to kennywood... haha i wish they still had it... :( :( they are losing their tradion wayyy too much.
(well, thats how i feel...)
it seems like they keep taking stuff out EVERY year!
Trueeeeeeeee. And replacing good rides with bad rides that nobody goes on. For instance, the Ghostwood Estate? The maximum number of people I've seen on this ride is 10 xD
After working at the park last year I can say that what you saw was a fluke. I was at Kennywood 5-6 days a week and there was always a fairly long line.
YES! like what are they thinking? :( i miss the old mill too. stupid garfield. but i kind of like ghostwood estate, except for when i get a crooked lazer.. the mining ride was fun though, that spider that fell down got me everytime.
this is the only thing i dont like about kennywood- they dont keep most of their rides. like this. what was wrong with this? and the gold rusher? still, it was old but kennywood is known for having old, traditional rides.
Kennywood still has a LOT of old, one of a kind rides. Look at the Turtle, Auto Race, Kangaroo, Garfield's Nightmare (the ride is still the same, just re-themed), not to mention the 3 wooden coasters. I miss Le Cachot also but the park had their reasons for removing it 10 years ago. Appreciate all of the great things they still have, I think they've done a great job of keeping the old and adding in the new, especially with how they are land-locked!
Actually, they did. Part of it caught fire during a test run and they decided to tear it down instead of fixing it. Tis a shame. Wish I could have faced my fear of that ride before it left
I didn't hear anything like that, but I wouldn't doubt it. I bet the fire was the push they needed. 'Hoorah! I can blame it on the fire and put in that new Lemonade stand I wanted!!'
Yep, I've seen one website (yes, it had been around that long) that reported Kennywood's plans to remove the ride about a month before he fire. It's a shame, really.
Ah. Makes sense lol. My bro and I used to have Rollercoaster tycoon and he liked to play Kennywood. ANd when something in his park would gain popularity, he'd take it down and put in a bathroom lol
It was a dark ride. While it was being dismantled in 1998, there was a small fire inside. The internet rumor back then was that Le Cachot had burned down.
I remember this ride!!! It was one of my favorites but it scared the crap out of me when I was little. I was so dissapointed to see it go.
It also makes me kind of sad that the new owners of Kennywood took out "The Goldrusher" and put in the new "Haunted Mansion ride". As corny as it was it was and always will be part of Kennywood history.
BEST RIDE EVER! Man I LOVED this ride. if only they had invented small digital camcorders back then... WHy tear it down?!?! they put bathrooms in its place... what a fricken sin!
*IF ANYONE HAS VIDEO OF THIS RIDE, PLEASE CONTACT ME. I WILL EVEN PAY YOU TO UPLOAD IT!*
Oh no!!! I moved to Texas as a kid and I loved this ride...I always wanted to revisit PA and go to Kennywood and go on this ride (and others of course)! I had no idea they got rid of it! That makes me so sad...was this that one with the black and white flashing room? I'm just going by what I remember as a 5 or 6 year old....
Kennywood is "America's finest traditional amusement park" yet they removed a classic, traditional dark ride built by Bill Tracy, one of the legends in the dark ride business. I don't get it... My favorite Kennywood dark ride is now just a memory. :-(
Dude..They remove ALL the classics. Look what happened to the oldest ride in the park! The Old Mill is now an advertisement. And the Gold Rusher! The new one is cool, I just rode it today for the first time, but the Gold Rusher..Man, I'm gonna miss it. I gotta say, though, this ride wasn't a favortie. Partially because I'm a scaredy cat and I was quite young the first time I rode it. Then I never got a chance to try again. I was looking for info on it because it was haunting my memories today.
lol, that's the truth. The witch lady on the top of the ride that used to bob her head in and out of the window used to scare me to death when I was a kid! Now the rides are too tame. :-(
@MysticalNekochan yeah but nowadays you got to put up with the parents who threaten to sue because their little angel was frightened... which probably explains why Garfield's Nightmare and Ghostwood Estate are so childish... We don't wanna scare the little ones!!! By the way, rumor is 2010 is the last year for Garfield's Nightmare, Thank God. Our Nightmare is finally coming to an end...
@kennywoodjoe Oh, I know, seriously. God forbid you scare the daylights out of your kid once or twice. Two years ago, I got the piss scared out of me on the Pittfall. What did my mom do? She laughed. Why? Because I wasn't hurt. What did she do when I cried getting off Le Cachot? She laughed lol Then she bought me a soda Haha! And thank god!!! I HATE that ride!! If it weren't for me having two very young nephews, I never would have ridden it. But the question is, is a new nightmare beginning?
like remember ride le lcacot frans little girl ride. but

Appreciate all of the great things they still have, I think they've done a great job of keeping the old and adding in the new, especially with how they are land-locked!

yeah i know what you mean. its a shame that every time a new ride goes in, one has to be taken out
tylerstr123 3 years ago
Actually, they did. Part of it caught fire during a test run and they decided to tear it down instead of fixing it. Tis a shame. Wish I could have faced my fear of that ride before it left
MysticalNekochan 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure the park intended on tearing it down months in advance of the fire.
AstroDroidR4O2 3 years ago
I didn't hear anything like that, but I wouldn't doubt it. I bet the fire was the push they needed. 'Hoorah! I can blame it on the fire and put in that new Lemonade stand I wanted!!'
MysticalNekochan 3 years ago
Yep, I've seen one website (yes, it had been around that long) that reported Kennywood's plans to remove the ride about a month before he fire. It's a shame, really.

Ah. Makes sense lol. My bro and I used to have Rollercoaster tycoon and he liked to play Kennywood. ANd when something in his park would gain popularity, he'd take it down and put in a bathroom lol

how fun was le cachot? i was too young to go on it when it was demolished early...was it like a walk through haunted house?
Snowflute 3 years ago
It was a dark ride. While it was being dismantled in 1998, there was a small fire inside. The internet rumor back then was that Le Cachot had burned down.

I remember this ride!!! It was one of my favorites but it scared the crap out of me when I was little. I was so dissapointed to see it go.
It also makes me kind of sad that the new owners of Kennywood took out "The Goldrusher" and put in the new "Haunted Mansion ride". As corny as it was it was and always will be part of Kennywood history.

This ride scared me so much when I was a kid that I never much bothered or wanted to go on it when I grew up. Yes, I'm a total wuss.
Sad to see it go though :(

Even though this is just a simple pretzel type dark ride, with simple stunts. It was my favorite dark ride EVER! I seriously miss it

Sigh :(
Kittee23 3 years ago
Yeah...that was my favorite part. There's one shot of it here and you can see part of it in the demolition photos.

This used to be my favorite ride as a kid. Thanks for the memories!

Kennywood is "America's finest traditional amusement park" yet they removed a classic, traditional dark ride built by Bill Tracy, one of the legends in the dark ride business. I don't get it... My favorite Kennywood dark ride is now just a memory. :-(
kennywoodjoe 3 years ago 3
Dude..They remove ALL the classics. Look what happened to the oldest ride in the park! The Old Mill is now an advertisement. And the Gold Rusher! The new one is cool, I just rode it today for the first time, but the Gold Rusher..Man, I'm gonna miss it. I gotta say, though, this ride wasn't a favortie. Partially because I'm a scaredy cat and I was quite young the first time I rode it. Then I never got a chance to try again. I was looking for info on it because it was haunting my memories today.

Though, I had a thought You know you've done your job as a dark ride designer when a kid gets off the ride crying lol
MysticalNekochan 3 years ago 3
lol, that's the truth.

Our Nightmare is finally coming to an end...
kennywoodjoe 1 year ago
@kennywoodjoe Oh, I know, seriously. God forbid you scare the daylights out of your kid once or twice. Two years ago, I got the piss scared out of me on the Pittfall. What did my mom do? She laughed. Why? Because I wasn't hurt. What did she do when I cried getting off Le Cachot? She laughed lol Then she bought me a soda Haha! And thank god!!! I HATE that ride!! If it weren't for me having two very young nephews, I never would have ridden it. But the question is, is a new nightmare beginning?
