I had my surgery exactly 2 months ago my curves were at 37 degrees lower and 53 degrees in the upper, Recovery was fast and sooo much easier than i expected! I went in for surgery on a monday and was released that friday, was up and walkin around on my own the 3rd day, off pain killers completely after about 4 weeks. I am so much happier, i love the way my body looks now, no more awkward curves to be embarrassed about :)
@Candyluvx From what I've heard the pain will be very intense for the first few days and then ease off gradually. My surgery is in three weeks and so also seeking answers....It will be a bumpy ride i'm sure you'll get through it. Good luck! :)
how are you doing today? i am considering surgery because of how much pain i am in but i am completely terrified. how much motion did you lose? how long was it before you could work/stand for a long period of time?
I had scoliosis surgery when i was 16 years old and my back is straight I kan't really straighten my knees out whenever i bend my back i have to bend them...their's alot you kan't do anymre..but i'm glad my back is ok....but what really hurt was the doctor taking my band-aid off i had surgery in Salt-lake Utah for the Shriners hospital..even tho i had surgery my backs been sore from this year...Soooo i will always get a massage during the weeks & the months....
lol, i just got my scoliosis surgery like two weeks ago, im doing A LOT better now! I'm so happy with how my body looks now! :) The first couple days weren't easy though... But good luck to anyone who is getting a spinal fusion! :) It's wayyyy worth it
i have a same story as yours but i have my surgery in this year( im now 14) I am little bit scared about the surgery, but when i watched your video , my first thought was ''my new hero'' :') i also cried , because of happines! THANK YOU SO MUCH !! <3
I have scoliosis im a male I had a rod put in in the early 90's im 34 rod is still in and still working fine but I have to say the hump in my back makes me self conscious I fear people look at me differentor it makes me feel ugly or atleast segregated but when I watched your vid I was inspired because your beautiful and flawless and an inspiration to us all ..God Bless
I am on the verge of getting the surgery for scoliosis and theres one thing that concerns me, how flexible I will be in my back, so i wanted to get a little summary from another teen who's had this done before, if you could reply, that would be great :)
@OriginalChrispy I had spinal fusion for scoliosis 9 years ago now. I've definitely lost a bit of flexibility in my back but the only time I ever notice it is when I try to do situps (imagine having to keep your back straight instead of bending it as you roll up) or turning around to look out of the back window of the car when driving (so I use my mirrors instead).
My surgery recovery wasn't as smooth as sloyster18 but 9 years later I'm very happy I had it done.
@OriginalChrispy Flexibility is pretty limited in some aspects, Before my surgery i was terrified id lose all flexibility in my back, which was a big deal for me since im a competitive dancer. But after i realized most movement is in your hips and lower back, as Orangechipgurl said things like doing sit ups and looking out the back window of your car become a challenge but you learn to do things a little differently.
Hi, i have to wear a brace for 2 years, I'm 12 right now . this video brought me too tears . You inspired me . I am now thinking about getting the surgery when I am 15 . I have a 40 degree angle . Im still growing so it will get worse .. Your my new inspiration .. Can you email me at nicholechiaramonte@gmail.com because i would love to ask you some questions . Your so brave . I hope I'm as brave as you (: @sloyster18
@nicholechi1714 I wore a brace for a year before I had the surgery and I have to say that wearing the brace was FAR worse then the surgery. I hated not being able to bend and looking deformed when wearing a brace. Now no one can tell I had scoliosis (except when I tell them I won't lift heavy things)
I'll be having surgery this summer in june. I can't help but to be scared for my life.. you see I'm a belly dancer, and bellydancing is my life! Its everything to me and I'm scared that I won't be able to dance after I do the surgery, but I know I have go thru with it because my curve is already at 50 degrees. I honestly don't know what I'd do if I can't dance again.. I'm scared and I just wanted an opinion from someone who has gone thru the surgery.. I'd really appreciate it
im so sceard. my backs getting bad and fast and im affraid that if i do surgery i wont come back out...my names amber. was it super pain full? were u sceard?
@poopcornification hey!i had my surgery in 2007 with curve of 45 degrees. There was no pain at all. I was walking alone, without the help of anybody the 3rd day!!!the 14th day i already hang out with friends!!i didn't take a single painkiller after surgery!it is almost 5 years now and i am sooooo glad i went the surgery!there is nothing to be afraid of!good luck :)
i just got this done not to long ago i am 15 and i had mine August 2nd i hurt real bad but i am happy. Sense i have been fixed i can't lift nothing heavier then a tea cup,and i can't do much more. i have enjoyed it sense my doctor told me that before i got the surgery done i would have dyed 2 years from now. i have on no brace just on my own. I have two 14" rods 25 screws and 2 spacers in my back now. If anyone has to get this done i will pray for you and do all that i can to help you out.
My grandma (84) has scoliosis, and she sits down all the time, because she can't get around, so when she get's up to walk, she is sorta stuck in that 'sitting' position.
I had my surgery done 11 years ago-I'm actually in the hospital in Syracuse right now though because having the rods has made pregnancy extremely complicated and very painful-the average pregnant woman arches her back slightly to make up for her center of gravity moving the further along she gets in pregnancy. These rods prevent it. My previous children were premature because of the complications of the rods and it looks like this baby is also going to be. Did you Dr. discuss any of these w/ you
i am going to have to get the surgery sometime this year or next. i am so scared. i admire you so much. this brought tears to my eyes. i hope mine going as well as yours! can you do sports now or dance? that is what scares me about it. where did you have your surgery at?? please reply, please please please. :/
I just recently had my surgery! :D I had it done December 5th and I'm recovering well and to those who are having your surgery done soon, don't be scared because it's not that bad, you'll recover faster than you think you will but be warned, the medication will pretty much put you out everytime lol
so i had surgery in august... and I was wondering if one of your hips went back to being even .. Im kinda scared because I might have to have surgery again because my bottom half that they did not fix is getting worse but my back is on watch and I don't find out if I have to have surgery again en till March 1st, and the wait is starting to kill me because I do not want to go though that pain again.... :'(
I'm 27 and was diagnosed with scoliosis in 1996 when I was about 11 1/2 and had my surgery in March of 96' but at that time it wasn't something that was talked about in school so it made recovery that much harder and getting back into school. When I was 14 I was told that I would need a 2nd surgery and that was done in January of 1999 a few months before freshmen year of high school. I do agree that surgery is a good idea because at least then the curvature is corrected and won't get worse.
My son is 21, I had to fight to get the doctors to diagnosis him with scoliosis and Kyphosis. I think the reason they did not want to diagnosis is because he is also Autistic. They probably felt that with his Autism he would not follow after surgery care safely... He is at 28 Scoliosis and 25 Kyphosis... My BABY... He has lived in pain his entire life without being able to say so - Autistic Mute. I have a new Ortho Doctor now....Maybe, Just Maybe, Just Maybe.. Thank you for sharing.
hi, amazing to here your story of recovery! My beautiful girlfriend has scoliosis, and it brings her down so low, she has a double curvature just as you did, and is eligible for surgery. I don't notice it at all, but whenever she talks about it she crys and feels sick.. she knows people who have found alot of complications with the surgery which is detering her from getting it. I want to make her feel better about it but I dont know what to say, please help! :(
ok i had the same surgery for my scolliosis when i was like 12 or 10 and i was in a lot of pain and dont really remeber it cuz of all the pain meds but u seem to be in no pain at all wired lol but lucky
Hey there I just watched your video. I am glad all went well through your surgey! I had a Spinal Fusion of 10 vertebraes in March of this year and Watching you video seemed to bring back memories I was 22 when i got my fusion. I am very proud of the work that was done. I had a bend of 78 and 45 so was big but they got me down to a 23 and 13 so I am more then happy and no matter what people will never know till they go through the surgey. I now can hold and play with my 3yr old son pain free! :D
It has been a little more than 2 years since my surgery. Except with mine, after about a month, I had some leakage and had to go back to have another surgery. Turns out I had an infection in my back, which was actually slowing my process of getting better. Since that surgery I felt better and was able to go back to school the next year. But those two surgerys saved my life! I have never felt better, before my self esteem was really low..2 years later, I still love looking at my reflection:)
today i am 1 year post op. my curvature was 107 degrees, but after surgery, it was cut down to 35 degrees. if you have any questions, you can ask me. <3
REPOSTED) Hi, my name is Amy Bruce. I am 7 years old and I have severe lung cancer. I also have a large tumor in my brain, from repeated beatings. Doctors say I will die soon if this isn't fixed and my parents can't pay the bills. The Make A Wish foundation, has agreed to donate 7 cents for every time this message is sent along. For those of you who sent this along I thank you so much, but for those of you who didn't, have a heart and repost this. <3 <3 <3 <3
@Juli3DX I had spinal surgery in August and i will never forget every moment of the recovery. It does hurt, im not going to lie. But every day gets better. Medicine can help alot for some people but mine didnt work on my body so i had 0 pain killers.
@asiaqueen4ever I have the same problem. my doctor said it´s because of too short hamstrings :( There are exercises to fix them but it takes awfully long. I hope that you´re not being bullied therefore like I am
@asiaqueen4ever at least something ^^but if you do the stretching exercises regularly your problems will disappear. mine have already gotten a little bit better
im getting my surgery in a few months and im terrified, i am scared to be put to sleep and not waking up, im also scared of not being able to walk ever again :(
@musiclivesinmyguitar Don't you worry. I got this same exact surgery summer before last, and I literally healed up in only a couple of weeks afterward. After that I was going camping, running, walking, even swimming.
The doctors that will be taking care of you have years of experience. This kind of surgery has been around for years now. Plus, you might get taller :) I gained 3 inches when it was done! It wont be so bad, I promise you. The outcome of the surgery is so worth it. I'll be praying.
@musiclivesinmyguitar Goooshh!!ther is not a single thing to be afraid of!i do understant what it fills like to put the had on the pillow knowing you're going to have a surgery!i felt the same way!but thing turned up to fix sooo fast i even didn't expected!i hang out with friends the 14th day after surgery!!!there wass no pain!i didn't take a single painkiller!im sure everything will be alright!good luck i pray
your story brought tears to my eyes my daughter is 8 yrs old and we just came home from the ortho doc her curve is 37 degrees they are going to try a brace because she is to young for surgery she has structural scolliosis due to osteoblastoma they removed the tumor and 5 of her ribs she is a trooper i pray for your full recovery and I hope Riley has the same ... Good luck ....
@sloyster18 thanks for responding it really means alot to me and also to riley, she has been doing fine were waiting for the brace to be done so we can pick it up for her I know it is going to be tough to get riley to wear it for 16 to 20 hours a day but i will help her understand the importance of wearing it . Thanks for the prayers the power of prayer really does work . How has your recovery been? wish ya the best of luck ...Ron

@starznmoonz1 Tshirts cover the scar just fine. I used to wear very baggy clothes to cover the back brace I had to wear for a year before I had the surgery.
@orangechipgurl how long was it until you were able to do normal things again after the surgery. and also can you still move after. sorry im asking questions but im getting surgery and i want to know from someone who has had it done. :)
@starznmoonz1 It has been 9 years now so I don't remember very well. I had my surgery at the beginning of summer break and I was fine to go back to school ~3 months later but I didn't do much all summer. I think it really depends on how fast you heal. I can move almost completely normally but I think situps are more difficult for me than normal people because my back bends less.
I am so glad your surgery went well, you are soo pretty! I am 13 and I have scoliosis, it bothers me every day and in the near feauter I will have to have surgery. You are such an insperation to many girls. Thanks for posting this vidio.
I am so glad you recovered so quickly. I am 33 years old and I had Scoliosis surgery when I was 12 years old. I am so glad I had the surgery back then. I have a full and happy life and I have a beautiful 10 year old daughter. Rods and all did not hinder me from having a normal and happy pregnancy.
I thank God for your surgery & recovery going as well as it did. I have a 27 yr old daughter & her base curve is at 52. We are having such a hard time finding a Dr. that will even consider doing anything for her. Her ribs are shifted so that it is causing her to have trouble breathing. She has a 8, 6, & 2 yr old, please pray for us to find her some help. God bless you with your recovery & sharing your story!
A girl in my class just had this she is 13 and her back was bad! she has been in recovery for a think 1 month now and will probably not come back till December :(
have you ever noticed, when ppl go to hospital, they do all good things..pretending as if they are kind, lovable or whatever..as soon as they recover, get out of that fuckin hospitals, they show their real character. get drunk, party hard and fuck this world.
i just wanted you to know that you're strong <3 i had the surgery about a year ago in november 2010. my curve was almost 70 and i know what you went through. xoxo
mine is higher and to the right i just found out i had it last month but my doctor says my spine should stop the curve from worsening since i stoped growing, so im hoping i wont ever need spinal surgery, but this really reasured me about living with it, thanks(:
Hey im so inspired by you and im shocked you go to the same place i go to to get xrays i live in Syracuse too :) My dad actually works at that hospital. Well im 16 got diagnosed in 8th grade and ive been wearin a brace but its too hard to keep up with for me. Anyway tomorrow i go 4 the usual check up im guessin ima have to get surgery but im so scared. I wanted to know can u really not play sports for a year and whats it like goin under?
i had mine in 2005 ehen i was 13 yrs old .. my recovery schedule was not to sit more than one hour not to bow or stay on the floor about 6 month < i was not able to pick my theings from the floor .. also i quit the school for one semester i take it in the home .. but now " alhamdllah " i'm back to my previous life i bow dance play doing every thing usually <3 and am also in my second year in the uni ..
I had an 80 degree curve but my back bones didnt stick out like yours matter of fact it didnt show at all only thing that was noticable was my hips which were slightly uneven... I had surgery when I was about 10 or 11 im 21 now and gotta go back for a check up hopefully everything is good!! I get back pain but the normal back pain which is from sitting in a chair in class for over 5hrs !! Yikes!! a little stretching always help! =] GOOD LUCK with your scoliosis journey!
hey im booked in for my surgery on the 12th december :) my curve is at 72 degrees! just woundering i noticed you had the curved in your side and then pretty much strait on the other side of your body i have it to rlly bad and was woundering if that goes away and you get a normal looking body after surgery? thanks
@TheShelbzy I've got 75 degrees, and I know exactly what you're talking about! One side of my body is straight and the other side at my waist it dents in quite noticeably. I've been to the surgeon for him to look at my spine and take x-rays, and of course, he wants to preform surgery. I decided to put the surgery off for a year, because In my case, I'm done growning. I'm trying all I can to Stay natural, Going to a chiropractor 2 timesa week. Also a dentist(x Best of luck, you're never alone!(:
23 years ago at the age of 12 I was given a choice by an orthopedic surgeon. It was a hard choice but an easy one at the same time. Corrective surgery now or in a wheel chair by 30 and more then likely death by 40. I took the surgery. I had a Harrington rod wire to my spine and the middle 10 vertebrae fused together. I was left in a full brace from chin to my hips until I was at 64 degrees and had a "S" shaped curve.
i might need scoliosis surgery and i scared my curve is at 49 and im only 15 im scared and i dont know what to expect and i have so much questions like does it hurt can u bend down or turn side ways?
@angeltrenda411 I still have full mobility to bend forwards and from side to side but very restricted backward. I can still twist my torso, but by the nature of the spine fusion this has resulted in not being able to slouch. This is a pro for posture but I am unable to relax the muscles in my back very well. Small price to pay for life. :)
@angeltrenda411 Also I was one of the more severe cases. So I know it's scary but in the long run it will be worth it. I might being restricted from doing some of the more physically demanding activities, but in reality you are only limited by what you allow yourself to be.
@angeltrenda411 i had scoliosis surgery on august 11th. Right after surgery i was really out of it. I was in the hospital for about 5 days. When i got home i was barley flexible, i was mostly sleeping. But it's been about a month and a half now and i have 0 pain. Its turned more into dis comfort at times. I can't totally bend over so i usually lower myself. If you have any questions feel free to ask!
@levits33 Good luck, buddy. I wish for the best for you. I have scoliosis too. Going to see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow. What was your first scoliosis checkup with a surgeon like?
I got diagnosed with scoliosis a few weeks ago and ever since then almost everyday I have been looking up scoliosis videos and this one is by far my favourite. You're so strong and always smiling! <3
I'm now fourteen years old :) In Febuary 2011 i was told i had a curvature in my spine of 52 degrees. It was physically not noticable so my doctor never suspected it, and never checked for it. In march we met with a doctor who told me i would be needing to have 2 metal bars put into my back A week and a half ago i went through this surgery and i wanted to thank you for making this video. I watched it the day before and it really helped me!
I just had the surgery and it was terrible but i was i happy i got it. ( i am 14 yr old boy) and i had to do it twice and had an crazy side effects like i was paranoid and could not sleep when i was maraphine.
I just had the surgery and it was terrible but i was i happy i got it. ( i am 14 yr old boy) and i had to do it twice and had an crazy side effects like i was paranoid and could not sleep
Honestly, I watched this video last year and it is what gave me the hope and courage I needed to go through this surgery. I know have a video of my own on my channel, check it out if you have any questions or if you interested. Good luck my fellow scoliotics <3
i had the surgery about a month ago, and i just wanted you to know, out of the hundreds of videos i watched, yours was by far the best! i hope you let my video response go up so i can get some more view and have people see my video/experience! thanks(:
Very nice video, you are right about the recovery is very fast. My son had his spinal fusion in Sept 2010. His recovery is much better than I expected. I would like to share with you his experience of his scoliosis surgery.
I had this surgery and my upper curve was 120 and I forget what my bottom curve was! But I had the surgery and my spine looks so much better. Praise God for the doctors at Children's! If anyone is having surgery and wants to message me or they're scared about their scoliosis and want to talk I'll be happy to!
do you go to pain management in chardon? dr mikhail i think his name is? that office looks excally like my pain managment doctors its kinda creepy but cool
Im 15, and having my surgery in 1 month i was so scared now after watching your video im feeling so uch better about it. Thanks for posting this video! :)
Im a big dancer and was curious if your surgery has affected your ability to dance?
@SaraBear401 I was nervous about having my back surgery too...(not scoliosis though) and this video made me feel so much better. Good luck with your surgery i bet it will go great! :) <3.
wow I have this aswell im just scared about recovery because i have a daughter to take care of so not only am i doing this for myself but also for her. I have 2 curves and also my spine is twisted. I could never enjoy wearing a bathing suit because when i was younger everyone made fun of me about it. Ive also have had this since I was 10 years old and i am now 24 :\ i was told i need 24 pins and 2 rods :\ thank you for posting this you are very brave :)
Thanks for the video. My daughter had her surgery on July 27, 2011. She is home now and still in a little pain but is doing great. You have inspired her to tell her story as well in order to help others who are going through the same thing. thanks agains and take care.
I'm 15 and my degrees are 56 on top and 49 on the bottom. and my mom thinks its best for me to go on and have the surgery cuz she thinks it will change my life for the better. iv never been admitted in a hostpital in my wholelife an im super freaked out, an idk how its suppoed to go. but your video has really opened my eyes and made me think if you can do it then i can do it..but if theres anything youd like to tell me that could help..would you please??? thank you soo much!! ((: <3
Awesome vid, my friend has scolosis as well.. her spine is bad.. if I had the money I would get her the surgery... one day I will be able to help her.
Looking good lady, i have a much smaller problem. I have a spinal diseases called "syrinx" i was diagnose with it 1 month ago. A month from now i have an appointment with a neurosurgeons t. do u think having a surgery will make me feel better?? do u think its a good idea?? is it dangours??? im a 23yr old male and I’m scared of the surgery
i had the same surgery when i was 14 or 13. i am 17 now and im so glad i went through with the surgery! i still get back aches ecspecially when its cold outside the doctor said it has something to do with the titanium rods in my back but other than that i feel and look soo much better! what went from a curve shaped like and 's' is now indescribably better! and i had a quick recovery too, us girls must be strong! GREAT video, very inspiring! *LIKE*
Ok, Im only 15 , i have 7 degres scolious , my doctor said if i had 10 degrees scoliousis i would have to get operated. Should i go on with the surgery that way in the future i dont have to deal with any problems or complications or something?
@ForevrMichelle You're doctor is flat out wrong. Surgery is typically only for people with spinal curves that are greater than 45 to 50 degrees. At 7 degrees your curvature shouldn't even be noticeable. However because you are 15 and have probably already started puberty it is absolutely vital that you get a brace as soon as possible.
@leydeets I have a 28 degree curve, and I've been growing a lot (16 years old) but I'm getting a brace and going to do therapy. I don't think I'll have to get surgery, I sure hope not!
@irockco I hope you don't need surgery! I'm 14 and we found out i had a 52 degree curve last year. But if you do it's really not as bad as it seems. I'm so glad i chose to have surgery. A month ago i had surgery, It seems so scary but it was a really good expierence. If you have any questions about it just inbox me!
@leydeets My dad had scoliosis too, he was 19 and had I think about a 45 degree curve and had to get the surgery. I've already been fitted for a brace and that will hopefully stop the curving, because you can live normally with a 28 degree curve. I'm not too worried about this, I looked through three or four videos like these and their are hundreds of comments of people talking about their expieriences with scoliosis. I'm not alone!
@irockco Theres alot of us that have this, it's sad but gives us a story to tell. And its good that you have your dad to talk too! Yes braces sometimes do magic on people. Wish you the best!
good choice on the dave matthews. i have to hav my surgery in Nebraska and i live in Texas. im sad i have t be away from my wife and kids for almost 6 months. and im scared of being druged up cuss i might end up saying some crude truck stop jokes that might not be right to say in a hosptial.

My grandma (84) has scoliosis, and she sits down all the time, because she can't get around, so when she get's up to walk, she is sorta stuck in that 'sitting' position.
thebradybunchlover 1 month ago
I had my surgery done 11 years ago-I'm actually in the hospital in Syracuse right now though because having the rods has made pregnancy extremely complicated and very painful-the average pregnant woman arches her back slightly to make up for her center of gravity moving the further along she gets in pregnancy. These rods prevent it. My previous children were premature because of the complications of the rods and it looks like this baby is also going to be. Did you Dr. discuss any of these w/ you

so i had surgery in august... and I was wondering if one of your hips went back to being even ..

My surgery was in July and my recovery was very quick. I can do whatever I want now. My life has gone completely back to normal.
HowlMagic95 2 months ago
It has been a little more than 2 years since my surgery. Except with mine, after about a month, I had some leakage and had to go back to have another surgery. Turns out I had an infection in my back, which was actually slowing my process of getting better. Since that surgery I felt better and was able to go back to school the next year. But those two surgerys saved my life! I have never felt better, before my self esteem was really low..2 years later, I still love looking at my reflection:)

@orangechipgurl how long was it until you were able to do normal things again after the surgery. and also can you still move after. sorry im asking questions but im getting surgery and i want to know from someone who has had it done. :)
starznmoonz1 3 weeks ago
@starznmoonz1 It has been 9 years now so I don't remember very well. I had my surgery at the beginning of summer break and I was fine to go back to school ~3 months later but I didn't do much all summer. I think it really depends on how fast you heal. I can move almost completely normally but I think situps are more difficult for me than normal people because my back bends less.

I was left in a full brace from chin to my hips until I was at 64 degrees and had a "S" shaped curve.
raef81 6 months ago
i might need scoliosis surgery and i scared my curve is at 49 and im only 15 im scared and i dont know what to expect and i have so much questions like does it hurt can u bend down or turn side ways?
angeltrenda411 6 months ago
@angeltrenda411 I still have full mobility to bend forwards and from side to side but very restricted backward. I can still twist my torso, but by the nature of the spine fusion this has resulted in not being able to slouch. This is a pro for posture but I am unable to relax the muscles in my back very well. Small price to pay for life. :)
raef81 6 months ago
@angeltrenda411 Also I was one of the more severe cases. So I know it's scary but in the long run it will be worth it. I might being restricted from doing some of the more physically demanding activities, but in reality you are only limited by what you allow yourself to be.
raef81 6 months ago
@angeltrenda411 i had scoliosis surgery on august 11th. Right after surgery i was really out of it. I was in the hospital for about 5 days. When i got home i was barley flexible, i was mostly sleeping. But it's been about a month and a half now and i have 0 pain. Its turned more into dis comfort at times. I can't totally bend over so i usually lower myself. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

i had the same surgery when i was 14 or 13. i am 17 now and im so glad i went through with the surgery! i still get back aches ecspecially when its cold outside the doctor said it has something to do with the titanium rods in my back but other than that i feel and look soo much better! what went from a curve shaped like and 's' is now indescribably better! and i had a quick recovery too, us girls must be strong!

@ForevrMichelle I think you doctor must have mis spoken. You only need scoliosis surgery if you have a curve that is 30 degrees or more :)
