Exactly ! That's what I thought too. I don't understand the fascination of Lebanese people (us) with France or the French...Besides this comment I love Fairouz and her songs full of emotion, and innocence...Quality and class I can't find in modern Lebanese songs...
First of all, France has never colonized Lebanon! Secondly, the historical ties between France and Lebanon are centuries old! Thirdly, Paris deserves to be sing for and specially by someone like Fairouz! Thus, go read history in order to get rid of your ignorance! Or else, go to hell!
jabal lebnen as an emirate existed for hundred of years as an autonomous emirate in the turkish empire, while syria was simply a province, don t try to invent your own history
@zeinoun13 France has never colonized Lebanon?? WOW That is NEW!! I should probably burn all the books in which I have been studying. Not only did they colonize Lebanon, they never even thought of the Lebanese (or anybody else for that matter) as PEOPLE. Go read your history.
I happen to be writing a PhD dissertation on the French COLONIALISM in Lebanon, which is different from a Mandate only by name. I'd be happy to share my writings. The French had internal policy conflicts between secularists and missionaries. The missionaries were shut away . This is when the secularists moved France to a policy of annexation instead of assimilation.
@hibamorcos: As a matter of fact, there is a world of difference between the terms mandate and colonialism! However, mandate means literally 'intidab' in Arabic whereas the meaning of colonialism is 'este3mar'! Anyhow, the secularists' policy of annexation that you just mentioned did not apply to Lebanon at all but rather to other countries like Algeria for instance that was truly colonized by France! In other words, the friendly strong ties between France and Lebanon are centuries old!
Ya3ne sorry I am breaking the news to you: France never cared about Lebanon. Annexation failed, but it was lobbied for in France. The Maronites were France's pawns against the British (who did the same to the Druze). France and Britain only cared about silk, access to reserves of wheat in the Bekaa and beyond, cotton in Syria (all of which required passing through Mount Lebanon), and the train road they were to build. I deplore colonized minds.
@hibamorcos: It was in fact evident and also inevitable that France would exploit the region's natural resources including those of Lebanon to supply its own shortages after WW1! Any country would do the same after being at war! Think about it! Anyhow, the mandate of France over Lebanon occured historically between 1920 and 1943!
Whatever man. France intervened thoroughly since 1830, but whatever. France was an imperialist country and only France mattered for France. Maybe all the historians are wrong and you're right. You know, Salibi, Hourani, kelon ma ma3on khabar shi. Bas iza 3andak wa2et mro2 3al archives taba3 wizaret el kherjiye bi Paris. Ma bta3ref yemken tesbot nazariytak. Ma3 eno sa3be shwei.
@hibamorcos: You're totally right! France intervened in Lebanon as of 1830 and perhaps earlier still! Nevertheless, its intervention had always been positive at the time and for the interests of the Christians of Lebanon specially the Maronites! Why do you look at it from a negative angle? :) 3ala kol 7al fekrit el archives taba3 wizaret el kherjiye fekra 7elwe la2anno 3atoul brou7 3ala Paris! Khalas next time for sure! I'm totally curious! :)
Regardless of which one it was, it was simply known as colonialism. For more authoritative accounts, check The French Overseas Empire by Quinn. He details the French Imperialist interests in Lebanon and the French Colonial Lobby that advocated for the annexation of Lebanon (Mount Lebanon to be correct) way before San Remo, and interventionism in the Ottoman Empire had started way earlier for reasons every historian knows.
@hibamorcos: It really is mandate and not colonialism! As for what Quinn has written about his interpretation of the French colonialism, it's totally irrelevant in the case of Lebanon! Simply because we, the true inhabitants of Lebanon, are the only ones who can evaluate our special ties with France and not others! Mind you that it was only France that saved the Lebanon from the barbaric and cruel ottomans, whose bloccade on Lebanon during WW1 costed the Lebanon one third of its population!!!
Really, you're lumping so many things together (such as "France"). Quinn is a historian who presented facts not interpretation. I can't write you all my dissertation on youtube, but there is no such thing as "special ties." This is what the French did with the elites of all the countries they colonized: made people think they have special ties with "civilized" countries. How can I explain to you?? Read Franz Fanon, I don't know! Do something! Haida el isti3mar bi 3ayno.
@hibamorcos: Very interesting subject Hiba! :) Alright, call it facts instead of interpretation! That's fine! What were those facts based upon then? Tell me! Quinn's own interpretation right? Simply since every historian can interpret facts from their own angle! And the righteous interpretation of those facts in the case of Lebanon are indeed ours and not those of 'al-mostashri9in' (with respect)! In any case, what France did to the countries it colonized was totally true but not to Lebanon!!!
Isti3mar, intideb sammi mitl ma badak. Either way I don't know how it doesn't make you feel revolt against their oppression and beliefs of supremacy! Walla ma 3lei iza istakhretna dawle "7adariye" (bas hiye ma fiya shi men el 7adara)?

I don't hate France, and I don't live there either. French colonialism is my PhD specialization. And they did colonize Lebanon. Badak tshouf kif bahdalo el batrak bi Versailles, barke bta3ref adeish bi 7ebo lebnen. Aslan ma ken fi lebnen ye3ne. W fransa dawle metwa7she mish bas ena mish 7adariye. Ama bil nesbi enno el frensewiye henne ma shi, ma3ik 7a2 100% bil reghem min enno 3am defi3 3annon ana halla2! :) Anyway, all the best with your PhD!

1- Lebanon's history dates 7000 years and as a proof Lebanon was mentioned 78 times in the bible!
2- When Lebanon was an emirate in the middle ages, Syria was an Ottoman province!
3- France had between 1920 and 1943 only a mandate over Lebanon and there is a world of difference between a mandate and a colony!!!
Tip: Keep away from distorted history books!

I usually don't listen to arabic music (because I can't understand a word), but Fayruz has something beyond words, her grace, and voice is just magical.
I love her!

I have the complete programme of the concert, the first song was zahratal mada2en and the second ya jesran khachabiyan... and then it was pretty much the same as Beiteddine's concert in 2002...

A small request: is there a way to remove the writing or place it at the bottom? no offense, but it's so distracting. thx.

I wish the video of her singing it in 2002 was available.
noulah84 4 years ago
she didn't sing it in 2002...
she sang the intro to zahratal mada2en as the first song.
