Assimilation - some consider this to be an awfully dirty word. But hey, when bright minds arrived in Galt's Gulch, all were required to take an oath: "I swear, by my life and my love of it..." - publicly affirming that they have broken the shackles of one social contract to embrace a new one... an assimilation into freedom... so really, is an oath to the Constitution too much to ask of people who wish to become citizens of our nation?
Ayn Rand wanted amnesty for illegals? So she would opppse the Arizona law? What about national security? What about national soverignty? Why let Mexico, the UN, or illegals determine our border security? We must enforce our laws and our border.
@ToxicOdiousOne Indeed. Leonard Peikoff recently came out in favor of the Arizona law. Open immigration is for an ideal world. In the meantime, we ought not be compelled to commit national suicide and surrender the West to the Third World and the Islamists.
Yaron understands the world far better than all of you; if you actually study the philosophy of Objectivism, you'll find that open borders are a great ASSET to a laissez faire capitalist society. Since there would BE NO welfare state and NO sacrifice of or by anyone, people would enter the U.S. to WORK and make a better lives for themselves and their families, which benefits ALL. There are NO contradictions here. So to vaccar37, jrswhite7751 et. al, you DON'T know what you're talking about!
@Aristotle1905 But conservatives cant imagine a Laissez-Faire capitalist system working because they are social-democrats. Dont try to argue with them, just let them live in their little dream world, reality will eventually bite back
@stephleom True, they are just as clueless as the Left. For example, both sides demonize "Big Business", forgetting that it is "Big Business" that provides millions of jobs and thousands of innovations that we would not otherwise have. They shackle businesses with regulations that strangle productivity. Abolish the welfare state and leave businesses free to produce, and a flood of new immigrants (workers) would be no problem at all!
Open borders doesnt work with a capitalist economy. Its fair to assume his opinion is being stated using a laissez faire economy as the model. Ayn Rand's theory was based on a laissez faire economy, which we don't live in.
..very disingenuous. These ideas would be great if he was advocating them before the creation of the Welfare State but instead his ideas would bankrupt our system. Typical senseless shit coming from an abstractionist
If I were to ask this guy a question I would ask him if Israel should have a open immigration policy. My guess is his principles would go out off the window.
Only one problem. There are laws. If he wants to hire Immigrants he better make sure to make them legal citizens first. Or he could always move his franchise overseas and hire that way. However, if this guy thinks open boarders is the policy of the constution he's sadly mistaken because by law sovereignty still exists.

Just wondering, where exactly do your individual rights come from? God? The state? Some intellectual? The majority?
The whole idea of individual rights not being some social construct is absurdity. Where do egoists honestly think they derive all their ideas, opinions and thoughts from if not through interactions with others?
There is no such thing as a dichotomy between the individual and society. Your body may be a distinct entity but your mind is not.
Yes. You have a right to do whatever you want. But consider the implications of it getting out you didn't do business with Blacks, Whites, Asians etc...very damaging.
If a government's role should merely be to protect individuals rights and Ayn Rand's philosophy suggests that no obligation can be forced onto an individual how does that government get funded? Any comments are appreciated.
@rambo26 Are you suggesting that for instance a poor girl being raped should have to pay for legal aid and that if she didn´t have the money to pay for the persecution of the rapist he should walk free? What happend to the idea of rule of law and everyones equal right to justice?
@rubikskub1983 By the time 100% voluntary taxation is implemented, there would be no problem in prosecuting rapists. A violator of rights like that would not be allowed to go free.
@Scoforever User fees? Are you suggesting that the us of a government service such as a court should be financed by the user of that service? Thats seems to be what you are suggesting. Only a moron would say fees should pay for the justice system. You been robbed? Sorry, can´t help you if your not able to pay the prosecutor and the judge a fee for taking on your case. Fucking nutjobs!
I don't know what the Ayn Rand philosophy is regarding government funding. I think governments should be funded by sales taxes. That way, those that can afford to spend a lot of money will provide most of the funding. Governments need money for operating expenses, but I don't want to pay any income or property taxes.
Two problems- first off, if taxes are voluntary it's going to be extremely hard to predict how much money the government would have to work with and thus make it very hard to do a budget. The 2nd problem with that is what if there are not enough voluntary donations to sustain the government services? What would that back-up plan be?
I generally agree with Dr. Brook's statements, and it raises a question to me about what an 'American citizen' is, in fact. It would seem to follow that an American citizen is anyone legally inside the borders if they were allowed by the border agents, as Dr. Brook stated. You couldn't put a requirement, such as having a physical address or any sort of license, upon being a citizen because that would imply the government need not protect their rights within the border. Anyone else have thoughts?
its absurd just like any principle applied in the extreme. If the gov stayed out of immigration control millions of refugees, criminals from other countries could flood the streets,. Is that protecting my right to walk down the street without being assaulted by beggars, thieves and diseased ridden people other countries tossed out? Please get a grip, look objectively at all possibilities of an assertion before you speak publicly. 3rd graders speak more intelligently off the top of their head.
Your argument is absurdist. Saying that you have a right not to be assaulted by criminals from other countries, therefore you should control the flow of people from other countries? Your country has a population of criminals also, should you evict everyone from the US, because otherwise Americans will infringe on your rights? Your argument doesn't hold in all cases, so can't possibly be correct.
All of you miss the point. Taxes. Illegals don't pay them. Yes I disagree with the current tax system but until that changes we have income tax as the primary tax method. Illegals come to the US illegally, avoid registering in any way, work ethically off of the books or gain income criminally. You people need to remember just what illegals are. Why is it so hard to register for a visa to work legally? And if it is the visa process you have a problem with, help update that process!
I suppose the argument will be that laws need to change to give illegals a legal status and allow them to pay taxes etc. I would be in favor of some of that as long as they are denied access to entitlement programs. We already have enough looters on our backs to go and invite more to jump on. There is also crime and terrorism to consider. Personally I don't want anyone here who refuses to identify themselves, especially when many do have legal methods available.

We don't allow companies to polute our waters with toxic waste. Likewise, we shouldn't let employers import potential spies, criminals, terrorists or illiterate peasants. Their right to maximize profits shouldn't trump our national interests.
The presence of new immigrants does not negate preexisting property rights of current residents. Unless you feel compelled to give a portion of what you owned to your new neighbors?
As for the cash, good (in the short term). We have had *way* too much money flowing into this country (see: sub prime loans and banking crisis)... And not really relevant long term, provided we also have a free flow of capital and goods.
I think that this view of immigration is a little flawed The United States government has the responsibility to protect its ppl, yes, that includes monitoring immigration. Illegal immigration is a disrespect to a nations borders that are internationally recognized. Legal immigration is fine, but it should be monitored by the federal government. The means of discouraging illegal immigration by means of putting bans on hiring illegal immigrants is immoral, not to the illegals but the business owner
Third, one side tells me, "It's the law." So fucking what? Prohibition was a law, matter of fact, it was a Constitutional amendment. Look what happened? Crime and violence, yeah THAT worked. The immigration procedure needs to be re-worked. Not all laws are effective.
The other side just wants to sympathize for some fucking leechers that don't want to do shit! I think borders should be open for people that want to work and better their lives along with a procedure. Keep the riff-raff out.
Scratch that last comment. Both sides don't say anything about taking away welfare subsidies.
Another thing, in a free market, we would NEED immigrants, illegal or not. These "illegals" are running most of the labor and I've heard some actually pay taxes. It amuses me to hear "Boo hoo illegals took my 20$ hr job!" TOUGH SHIT. It's not the government's job to protect jobs, it's yours.
I've been listening to both sides and comments of the immigration debate and they don't tackle the root of the problem: big-government subsidies
One side wants to subsidize immigration with amnesty and benefits on the backs of people who are on the line. The other side wants to just toss them aside. Ask yourself? Is this workable? Immigration can't be solved without looking at economics. If we stop giving benefits, then they will stop coming because they won't have reason to come.
Jobs don't sit in a static amount. If there is a higher population, more jobs are created.
Look around you. Do cities which have population densities 1000x higher than rural areas have extreme levels of unemployment? No! Because an increase in population causes an increase in the division of labor.
Opening borders allows people to come in, but it doesn't guarantee them jobs. So those who can't find any work would be just as free to seek employment outside the country.
Protection of individual rights...

I may be wrong but it seems to me that with totally open borders there won't be just 500 people showing up for a Walmart job but 5,000.
And what about getting into college? Also, as long as we have government run schools...

Good! More workers the better. People can pay for college. Dr. Brook isn't for public schools.

The more workers the better for Walmart but not if your the worker

That's a misconceived view of economics. The more employees filling a position the more demand there is and so the job market expands as well.
