The Blue are an insect-like race of creatures in the anime, Blue Gender. They are the advanced form of the "B-cell" that infected a number of humans. After scientists experimented with the "B-cells" on modern animals, the injection of the cells mutated them and the infected animals mated with non-infected ones, mutating them as well. The birth of the "B-cell" was by supposedly by the Earth itself in an attempt to kill mankind,
due to their overpopulation and damage caused to the planet in a process in the story called "Projected Cell Death" or the "Grand Will of the Earth". This process happens when a group of cells in an organism become over populous and if left unchecked, they would devour the organism. In this case, the Earth is viewed as a single living organism and the group of cells over running it is humanity. The Earth is using the Blue to defend itself from being further
Piles upon piles of dead fossil-like Blue occupy most of the space inside the nest and the team also discovers a large sphere that is composed of a gell-like substance in the middle of the nest. A massive Blue (the little buddie with the scyte like legs at the end of the vid whos been pwnd) is birthed from it and it attacks the team. It kills everyone except for Yuji and Marlene.
Yuji kills it and when he eyes the sphere again, he believes it will hold all the answers he wants. Marlene wants to go with him but Yuji makes her stay behind because he does not want another person to die because of him. Before he goes inside, Marlene stops him to tell that she is carrying his child.Yuji is shocked and hesitant, but he hugs Marlene telling her that he'll come back for both of them. He heads into the sphere and it is implied he is inside the Earth's consciousness.
A light ascends skyward from the sphere and heads into space. Yuji is seen hovering inside of the Earth's consciousness, while he apparently gets the answers he desires. What he asks and hears isn't shown as Yuji gets his answers and accepts his responsibility. He is then seen apparently hovering above various areas of the Earth, seeing visions of his previous life before he was put to sleep.
Second Earth is shown, along with scenes of its residents in sorrow and dread. Miyagi is shown in his quarters overlooking Earth while dozens of residents rush in and open fire on him, killing him instantly. They then turn the guns on each other and 2nd Earth blows up after much gunfire.
This implies that the Earth's control goes beyond the mere planet's surface and influences human population regardless of where they reside (but in more likely events, the crew aboard second earth lost purpose up in space, and as time passed anger/isolation took root, further hints are shown by the grey looks of the crew.
The earth (B cells) attempted to destroy second earth, but the humans onboard 2nd earth ultimately killed themselves off as they tried to escape in the shuttles in midst of the infighting.)
