At the time it seemed like a simple answer to a world in chaos and I would venture this song to be seeking the common denominator in the basics of mankind. Down with corn syrup, Viva Mexico.
@ipimees, Coca Cola got some of the most interesting ads using these classic songs. The one featuring the Polar Bears & the Penguins to the beat of The Beach Boys is a classic. The drinks suck, at least they got good commercials I agree.
I love this commercial. When it first played, it sounded like it was promoting world peace, and that was a big deal during the Vietnam conflict. A VERY catchy tune--and everyone was soon singing it. For those of you who WEREN'T around in the early 70s--The idea of world wide peace and harmony was no longer a "hippie ideal." Many people, even many who'd supported our involvement in Vietnam, were tired of/sick of/angry about the years/money/lives spent there and wanted us out.
@LakeLady73 Wars sometimes disarm others. Look at the Iraq War of 2003 disarming Gadhafi of Libya of most of his wmd (books like "Did these stories really happen" shows it did). Obama had an easy time getting him out of power due to the Iraqi occupation of Bush and Berlusconi.I supported (very strongly) the Iraqi occupation every minute it was current. Most of the people of 1971 America (the protesters I mean) were purely, shamelss, sick fucked up assholes!
So we may blame Coca-Cola as the genesis of this "We Are The World" mentality, all the "shiny, happy" (and racially-integrated) people singing as if one. How very 'communistic' of them!
Well, the Atlanta, GA-based Coca-Cola is a Democrat-owned company, while New York-based Pepsi is Republican-owned.
@gymnastix Of course, in between this Coke commercial and "We Are The World" was another, Christmas version of this commercial, and that Brit-produced Christmas video, "Do They Know It's Christmas?," recorded by "Band Aid," an assemblage of Euro-socialists, if that later term, especially these days, isn't redundant.
@gymnastix On the surface, this TV commercial seems like a perfectly benign, innocent concept--everybody (representing varying racial backgrounds, of mixed genders) happpily singing in a chorus. But the symbolism of this is one-worldism, people not thinking for themselves, but as part of group-think, which is communist.
And don't think for a moment that wasn't the intent of this ad's creators all along!
@gymnastix Of course, the media at-large, the public school systems, and colleges and universities have joined in this "chorus" of communist conformity, which is why the world is going down the crapper plenty fast, and is possible for persons such as Barrack Hussein Obama, an Indonesian national and Islamo-fascist appeaser, to be elected the leader of the so-called (but no longer true) "free world."
@gymnastix What in the hell are you even fucking talking about? It's a damn soda commercial. Go take your debate somewhere where people actually give a shit.
I was 7 when I first saw this ad. You have to remember, or keep in mind for the younger generation, that this ad was aired during the height of the Vietnam War. Man was going to the moon (Andy Kaufman was goofing on Elvis) and Archie Bunker was about to change the TV landscape forever. It was 40 years ago this year. This was life in the 20th Century.
@visaman - lol! & I usually don't crave soda - but over the last month or so I've been wanting to drink C-C a lot. I think I purchased - over that amount of time - about 5 family sized bottles..a puzzlement..Thankfully, I'm back to taking in mostly water & fresh juice!
The New Seekers were originally scheduled to sing this commercial but were unable to due to their American tour, so the producers hired session musicians and called them "The Hillside Singers". Shortly after the Hillside Singers started climbing the charts (wigth references to Coke removed), the New Seekers released their single and both rode the charts in 1971. The New Seekers version peaked at #7 on the Hot 100, The Hillside Singers version peaked at #14.
I think if you do your research, you'll find that the tv ad version was recorded by the New Seekers. And it was by public demand that the New Seekers had to release their version. They were touring America at the time.
OMG! You are Totally Missing the Whole Concept here. It might be a Coke commercial(i drink Pepsi), it is people coming together and living in PEACE! duh!
Shining example of the corporate world co-opting something nice and turning it into an insipid bid for your dollars. Too bad I like to drink Coke so much.
They say this is the greatest commercial ever made. It may not sound like much but considering the impact television has had on our culture its definetely something.
@Mizukage6 - The Wikipedia article about this agrees with you, per the mention of the "Campaign" magazine posting about it [from a 2007 issue]..advertising was different in those days, more inclusive of the everyday householder re: the style/approach...& as in the case of Coca-Cola, in many ways a lot of ads, in general, were more
globally oriented. I still remember this commercial today - a delight to find it here @ Youtube! :oD
@frosted1030 Not only that its the pesticides they put in the syrup to make the Coke. Farmers in India use Coke as pesticides because its cheaper than regular pesticides and already has a high pesticide content. Coke factories flush out their syrup tubes with pesticides.
We used to have to sing this song in Kindergarten way back in 1983, and I hated it. Of course the references ot Coke were removed, so it went "I'd like to hold it in my arms and keep it company."
I never saw the commercial until youtube went up. I suppose the teacher was an ex-hippy or something.
An extended, non-commercial version of this, scrubbed of all references to Coca-Cola, was released after radio stations complained that people were requesting a commercial to be played (without payment).
Coca-Cola is the best! This commercial is awesome, it tastes fantastic and Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway owns 8,6 % of the company. It's common knowledge that Buffet can't be wrong, right?

@fredericktheman .. How is everything Norway... I was in Stavanger for a week in 1967 and just loved everyone there and the fjords were just awesome....

How to kill a people who are not a people? its the serpent, you kill the bottom and the head rises, kill the bottom and they have no direction. Hello. King of paradise. Look at your disgrace. Dont you want to see gods mercy? id like to crusify the world, and you see the mercy you aforded your fellow man, but mercy is weakness, comes from weakness. They will never understand.
This is a good advert, coke should once in while play it as old school so that those of us in nursery school then will listen to it with nostalgia. How can i get the producer to get me a copy of this song, it is marvelous
It was amazing the feeling I felt on seeing the opening shots of this in the new coke anniversary ad..that wave of nostalgia-thats kind of upliftingly warm & familiar. They should just re-run the whole original ad along the lines of classic ad, classic coke...
@missmarypickford that is so cool 'classic ad. classic coke'- like a twist on its self. you are right-cuz i also felt that wierd 'wave' come over me when i saw the first part of that new ad. you should write to coke & tell them!
@missmarypickford Its the girl at the beginning with her blonde hair. her wholesomeness. the purity of her singing that song, it makes you have that feeling you had as a kid, everything being safe and protected . and now that we are all grown up we just we wish we could get back...
