Well, they rose to power in the mid-1800's, after Taufa'ahau I, of the Tu'i Kanokupolu dynasty, defeated the rival Tu'i Tonga dynasty. Taufa'ahau changed his name to George Tupou and became king of a unified Tonga.

Hey just replying to How did the Tupou Dynasty came about..Tupou the 1st was the uncle of Laufilitonga(The last Tu'i Tonga)..Tupou 1st came from Ha'apai to Tongatapu to take the throne since Laufilitonga at the time was too young to rule..Thus came forth the Tupou Dynasty..the family now keep and practice up to today the same traditions since the time of Laufilitonga..
