Whenever I take a solo, I use the ionian mode. How do you know what modes sound good to a certain progression or key? I'd like to mix things up and use different modes, but I don't know when it'd be appropriate.
So if we play that chord progression (the second example he talks about starting on e) does that mean we're in the key of A on the 5th mode, or the key of E on the 5th mode of A... sry I'm new to this :(
@P5ych00 That's not as beginner as you might think. That's a question that plagues even advanced players. There's two ways to think of this. I would subscribe to the view that the "home" chord is the "key". If I'm onstage and yelling out a key, I would say "E". It's actually using the major scale of A Major, but it wants to resolve back to E for the resolution. It's really in the 5th mode of the key of A Major. Maybe more correct might be to say it's in the key of E Mixolydian.
@P5ych00 A song using "tonal harmony" is always built around a key center. Thus a song in the key of C would cadence or end on a C Major chord. Most contemporary songs use tonal harmony. That is different from "Modal Harmony" which is built around a mode (or modal scale) and not a key center. A not so technical way to think about it is to remember that modal harmony is about the SOUND of that particular mode-- whether its Dorian mode, Ionian mode or whatever.
Once you understand the idea that Frank puts forth, that ALL notes are based on the Major scale, but start on the note of Chord emphasis, you have it made! Example: A progression of Am-G-F-G-Am (All Along the Watchtower) puts the emphasis on Am, but is in the key of "C" (IV & V (F-G) together). So, with the emphasis on Am, you start your solo in the Aeolian mode (it's the 6th mode of the key of "C") and play your solo all over the fretboard, resolving to the "A" notes or giving them emphasis.

on the other hand, is ionian the ultimate mode - with the 'best' tonal gravity among other modes? or we perceive it as such just because we are used to it?
that's right - you have to hear it - the tonal gravity of a particular mode, and then - how to make someone feel it too, so that your music holds water
