Warum spielen die Pianisten nur so selten auf Bösendorfer? Für Schubert, Haydn und vieles von Beethoven, Brahms und Ravel ist es doch keine Frage, welcher Marke man den Vorzug geben sollte.
HappyWandy457, Of course Andras Schiff is very gifted as an interpreter and manages to give exact indications on tempo and expression. But lacks to explain technically how to fullfil this, so that his disciple knows exactly how to press and jump on legatto parts of this particular piece.

ew years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand
lol you just dont get it,i think you should come back to a video like this in some years to come,in the mean time go and get a grade one piano book out and have a go with twinkle little star
Well...a good understanding of SOME amount of complex, urm...concepts and stuff, shall we say, is essential to mature piano playing. But you know, I gotta say - we are entitled to have our opinion and say it, but not force it on others without giving them room to answer with their own. And most annoyingly, Shiff, without giving the performer to respond or even play her own interpretation, is doing precisely that!!!
If this girl was satisfied with her own interpretation why would she even play in the class? In fact, the only reason Schiff is correcting her is because she is not playing what is Schubert's intention, and we know this by the score. Why make such ignorant comments?
we don't just disagree... one of us must be right. You are right that one's personality must be felt through the music to be a good performance. HOWEVER, style must trump personality. If you decide you want to play the piece differently than what is notated in a score, then you are ignoring the composer's intentions (there are few exceptions). So it's not just doing what the teacher says. you must follow the composer's intent if you want to be a good performer.
Sure, you can go ahead and play completely different from what Schubert wanted. You are free to do that... no one is stopping you. But It will probably not be as good as what Schubert wanted. Why do you think that musicians who are most successful FOLLOW Schubert's marking? It turns out, that the music is actually most interesting to listen to and works best when the markings are followed. Even so, there is still plenty of room for personalization, and every player will perform differently.
Two things. First, Schiff is not Schubert. Therefore, if you're telling me we must follow absolutely what Schubert wants, we shouldn't be following absolutely what Schiff wants. This doesn't necessarily mean what Schiff has to say about Schubert is wrong; it simply means I think we might need to arrive at a "correct" interpretation of the music in a different way.
Yes,I agree that you should find your own interpretation. However, so we don't stray too far off topic I just want to reiterate that I don't think that Schiff is imposing on the girl too much here. I think it is great that Schiff is throwing out some of his own ideas (warm room, out in the cold, etc.). He is stimulating her imagination. I think that is part of the process, you get to see how others think about the piece, thereby stimulating your own imagination, not to copy!
Secondly, you assume our opinions cannot exist together; I beg to differ. Now, I *will* grant that many times "expert" insight HAS helped me reach deeper understandings. But the only reason that is the way is because it provides a new interpretation that through itself provides fresh insight. I find dissecting such new interpretations, finding out why i feel them correct, and then fusing those good qualities with what I currently know about the piece, a very enjoyable process.
...and it is that dialogue, that CRITICISM, that PERSONAL touch, that I feel is absent in this teaching session, wouldn't you say?
A last point I'd like you to consider. If I play a Schubert piece, I don't serve Schubert; I serve MUSIC. Now Schubert obviously knows more about music than I do, but his knowledge isn't perfect, and its finding out how you might improve on already seemingly perfect music (if possible) that I love doing so, that is all!
harryk, You say Schubert knows more about music than you? If there is a truth or beauty, or more to know, than why is it beyond reason that there could be a real expert that actually has more knowledge than the student. In that situation, a willing learner would want to lend themselves over to the knowledge of the teacher's art. That is the best way to learn in any field.
Or would you play basketball for Coach K without listening to any of HIS ideas about the best way, and play for yourself?
Because "knowing" in music isn't as simple as knowing the answer to 1+1. There needs to be a much deeper understanding of how and why the music leads itself to be played that way, This is "interpretation", and there are as many interpretations as there are players of the piece, each of which can reveal deeply personal truths about each players' attitude. Each is individual, inimitable. And any attempt otherwise is the way of the sheep, and leads, I believe, only to music without soul.
@sam0xin true, but it is the thinking BEHIND such a question that needs to be praised. Bit like music yanno, when sometimes a seemingly simple passage actually contains a great amount of wisdom and meaning within~~
@sam0xin but why has you such an emphasis on the answer only; when many-a times it is the JOURNEY to the answer that is sometimes more fun than the answer itself??
I once attended a concert of his where people were coughing so much, he stopped playing and told the audience to get all the coughs out of their systems, and then left the stage. He came back a few minutes later and started the piece over again.
That particular venue can be like a sanitarium sometimes. Old people are so annoying :/ Still, he's the first performer I've ever seen object to it in that way, it was quite charming :)
wouldn't dismiss him as brashly as that, if for the sole reason that he happens to be a great pianist. your yank pragmatism and no nonsense attitude are very commendable, but, suspending them, you'll be able to enjoy the gains of a more philosophical approach - he's not the first to talk about the role of silence in music
i wasnt saying he wasnt a good pianist(he probably is a very good preformer to give a masterclass). just that what he said and how he said it was silly.
right, and in case what I said the first time around [your yank pragmatism and no nonsense attitude are very commendable, but, suspending them, you'll be able to enjoy the gains of a more philosophical approach - he's not the first to talk about the role of silence in music] was too complex for you to grasp, let me put it in your language: what you said and how you said it was silly
You should listen to him live - than you would know what he meant. You can even here the space between two single notes while he is playing. This is not arts fartsy - it is fantastic.
This is the warm room in your wet dream haha

Why must what the teacher says always be followed, always be right?
Why should we play it how Schubert wanted it to be played, if we had a different idea of what the music meant?
Where is the personal element in music wherein we are forced into a single supposedly correct interpretation, that we don't even get?
Ahh well YouTube is hardly the place to get debating about these, but let's just leave it on that on the above, we disagree, ok?
