I've had the original HD Hero for a couple years now, and it's pretty respectable for a CMOS camera, but still pretty useless at night. Just got the Hero2, and it's definitely a HUGE improvement for night shots. I accidentally left it on for a long drive, and it recorded into the night. I was amazed that I could actually see just as good (if not better) than actually being there.
Oh, and definitely 30fps for night. Lower fps gives the camera more time to take in light. 1080p helps a little too.
I believe I just raised the video to wide angle 1080 and went from there. Any setting that I saw that may have helped quality I probably adjusted. I'll check tomorrow to see what settings I have.
I know others have asked, but you haven't responded--what settings did you use on the camera to shoot this? Many of us have a lot of noise in low light with the Hero 2. We'd love to know how you pulled this off.
I normally wear gloves but I was in the process of buying new gloves because I threw the old ones out. Mainly because they weren't even riding gloves. They were mechanic gloves so they were useless anyways in the event of a crash.
Just back from New Hampshire with my new GoPro Hero2 (HumbleOutdoors $270 with free memory). The video quality is so crisp, tons of great action shots.
@TheCarManiac18 Well... as you can see, I park in my porch, have neighbors, and a loud exhaust. I do not warm up my bike solely for that reason. On top of that this video was recorded around 2AM.
@airjaded7 Haha yeah I actually wasn't going to walmart. I can get there in about 2 minutes if I went the right way. I was just excited to make a video after figuring out my helmet mount and then got hungry after I started riding.
@Susasama No, it's a special tachometer that reads everything below the engine's power curve in the first 25% of the face and the power curve takes up the remaining 75%.
Search for "Auto Meter 6854" for an example of what I mean.
Yep, it is. Just that the first green section.. That first number is 8,000RPM 0-8K is in small numbers at the bottom. He is probably shifting early because the engine is still cold. Smart man not abusing a cold engine.
@ExtremeRoadViews A "simple firmware upgrade" won't give it a sensor with more than twice the resolution, twice the cpu power and better optics. For an extra $200 over the HERO2, I'd sure hope the VIO-POV HD has better performance.
I just bought 2 today. Do you happen to know what your settings are placed on the hero2. I recorded earlier tonight and the video didn't come out as clear as your did. Did you have to do any editing.
@afgoose It's right out the box, no settings changed. Quality is beyond great when I got underneath a gas station over hang and down the strip(VEGAS). Noticeably better than previous GoPro
@ncunuclear718 Yes, In fact I have tested both under low light conditions and the difference is dramatic
Hero HD: vimeo dot com/31179452 versus HERO2: vimeo dot com/31179521
But I commented on this video before I'd done those tests because I had attempted to use my Hero HD driving at night and the resulting video was unusable. That's why when I saw this vid, I knew the low light performance was much improved.
What housing did you use? My Hero2 has horrible wind noise, with and with out the waterproof casing.
Are you using a external mic?
Where is it mounted on your chin?

Dramatically better low light performance than the old Hero HD. Good white balance, and much brighter and clearer.
