  • wow quelle attirante ville j éspère la visiter un jour.... formidable montréal

    mona

  • lmao Montreal is a french version of New York

  • English population is a big part of Montreal inhabitants.most of them can't say a single word in French.

And they ask us speaking English??

You have to understand one thing :Most of the Montreal"s francos don't speak a single Anglish word. Why ? because they are FRANCOS!

It's like asking a Texan speaking a lill French for the sooo gentle tourist.

That doesn't make sense at all ins"t it?

  • french people in Montreal have the right to put their language first, and be speaking it, it's a piece of their culture, and they do need to live it! what I mean is the english canadian has to respect that fact. At the same time the french has to respect english. if an english peron speaks english in Montreal, it should be okay, the Montralians should understand that it is a part of tourism and hospitality to welcome newcomers or tourists.

  • Very attractive city and a nice song too ..what

    language is it ?

  • vietnamese

  • would it kill yas to english it up just a little for the tourists? the rest of this nation bends over backwards for u ya know

  • @mkhatfield

Why does it need to be "english-ed" up at all? When you go to France (or any other non-English country), do you expect THEM to "english" it up for tourists? Just go and enjoy the muli-cutural experience!!

  • @mkhatfield

Don't you know the tourists come to Montréal for for its French aspect ?

And if you knew anything about Montréal, you'd know service in English is available everywhere.

  • i guess québec is somehow the new france. though i'd love it much better if people didn't speak english at all. otherwise, the stupid guy who made the "move back to france" comment needs to know Québec is a nation within Canada's federation. That's like saying to a puertorican that because now he's part of the US he needs to speak english or move back to Spain, retard.

  • Well when I was there I went to Laval and felt like I was in France some people did not know English!!!!

  • lol, that is normal my friend, WELCOME TO MONTREAL !!! some people here dont need english at all, actually you learn it casue you watn to be a wise person and speack more than 1 language , but that it is all

    A Revoir mon amie

  • montreal is VERY BILINGUAL ..... however... dont you DARE go anywhere else but montreal if you dont speak french!!!! besides for west island.... fuckin jews...

  • Montreal is filled with rude and arrogant French who would get angry instantly if you talk to them in English. If you dont like to speak English, then move back to your shit hole country of France.

  • if we go '' Back in France '' would it mean that you'd need to go back in England? idiot.

  • no you wrong. why you say that ? i'm french and it's not my case... i speak english (a little) so say all the french are like this please ;) per advance, thank you :)

  • @Tennessee44444 lol you dont know your history you idiot we were here first

  • @Tennessee44444 then go back to USA and than in England because your ancestor are from there :D

  • Montreal is not representative of the entire Quebec people. Outside of the immediate surroundings, most people knows only French and hardly speak English. That's why we often see divergent opinions about the French/English debate depending on where people are located geographically.

  • don't give up tim` hanh phuc cho chinh' minh` nghe

  • I believe Quebec should stay French but remember just like in the United States New Mexico is 80% mother tongue spainsh but all know english it is the offical language of USA just like Canada

  • the official language is also french in canada

  • Yup i live in San Antonio and visit Montreal three times a year and I know four languages fluent Spanish cause of mexico and French cause am half french Canada with Japan mon..and English cause i live in USA. I think the french accent hot in Montreal!

  • ...you obviously don't know English very well, do you?

  • I don't want Quebec to become a country. I just want that English-speaking people respect a little bit the French language. It's not so complicated.

  • Ya same for me ... ppl are really getting stupid ,only a certain part of the population ever wanted the quebec to be a country.

I seriously hope canadians and americans can get that in their fucking head and just stop being so arrogant ...

Im proud canadian AND french ,thats means that im on the side of the ppl who insult me which is pretty sad.making me lose faith in manking ...

  • lots of people in the states get upset when others speak Spanish........it's just that people who speak two languages look intelligent compared to those who don't.......the ones who don't are afraid of feeling inferior.

  • Hi Yan, Im very interested in knowing what do you mean by "respect the language" Ive been mistreated several times because I spoke english in places like Mont Royal or East of St Laurant. Funny enough When I speak spanish, all of the sudden I transform from being a douche bag to an interesting guy. I have a big appreciation for the Quebec culture I try learning the language however the anti english attitude is a big turn off. Can you explain?

  • Of course, everywhere in the province of Quebec there's a big independent movement. Those guys have no respect for all of those who speak English. I'm also against it. Mistreating someone for speaking a foreign language is very stupid. I mean, I want Montreal to stay a French city but I don't want it to hate all native English speakers. If you're just a tourist, you don't need to be fluent in French. If I'm going to travel in China, will I learn Mandarin before? Of course, I won't.

  • But if you're going to stay in Montreal (or if I'm going to stay in China), you have the responsability to learn French, the only official language of the Quebec province.

  • Last time I checked under the Canadian Chart of Rights and Freedoms, French AND ENGLISH are both the official languages of Canada.

And Quebec is part of Canada isn't it?

  • it doesnt apply to the povince of quebec where french is the sole official language

  • not really is not. For instance if a police officer stops you you have the right to be addressed en either language, he cant refuse. LEGALY

  • Im sorry if that sounded a bit aggressive, Yet i dont think is fair that Quebec thinks it is its own country and they cash in Checks from People all over canada. Does that make sense? Should Quebec be so aggressively nationalistic, making english speakers secondary citizens when they receive all this funding from all the other canadian provinces?

  • ur right i agree

  • they are just retaliating for what the english people have done to them over their history... and btw.. english does not have to be written on commercialized products.. but french does... if you havent noticed their is not a word of english on the metro in mtl

  • @wtfismycar Est-ce qu'il y a de l'affichage en français dans le métro de Toronto ?

Is there ANY French in the Torontro subway ?

    I thought so ....

  • @adrianoaguilar Then If québec recieves so much more money than it gives Ottawa, why not let Québec seperate ? Would'nt it be more cost efficient ?

BTW : I just want to attract your attention to the fact that most of this discussion here is in English, WE speak YOUR language. can YOU do the same ?

  • i totally agree with you everything u said btw what region are u from

  • I'm from Saguenay. What about you?

  • montreal

  • can i ask you a serious question?

how do you Canadians keep you cities so friggin clean ?! / est-ce que je peux te poser une question sérieuse ? comment faites-vous les Canadiens vous gardent que le friggin de villes ainsi nettoient ? !

  • I ADORE Montreal. Canada is soooooooo freakin' AWESOME!!! LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVE IT. I went once and fell madly deeply truly in love with it. I live in Vermont ( so, not tooo far ) . Please someone from Montreal ( preferably in the late 30's ) write me. I need a Canadian friend. I am truly jealous of those of you who live there. Best food, crazy beautiful place!

  • Bon clip. Bon choix de musique.

  • I love that french taste in that city. I would love to visit this city.

  • its fuckin clean montreal

  • its like here in San Antonio, Texas only 2 hours from mexico and alot of mexican nationals refuse to speak english the main language in USA...it annoying when i make the efforts to speak Spanish

  • I'm visiting Canada soon and i'm wondering. In canadian cities where they only speak french, can they speak english as well or are they like in France where they dub english/american movies because they don't want to learn english? So funny when you're at a hotel in France and turn on the TV and all american movies are in french. Anyway, what's it like?

  • If you visit Montreal you will discover that it is equally divided between French and English, obviously depending on what part of the city you are in. But pretty much everyone is bilingual, especially downtown where you hear more people speak English than French. The only difficulty you will have to overcome is understanding French signs in public lol. And btw, all the major cinemas downtown play the American movies in English, no French BS!

  • You're full of crap. Montreal is more than 70% French and the English are only about 12% of the population. The rest of allophones. As far as there being more English than French downtown that is baloney as well. It's people like you who can't accept the French character of Montreal that should take a hike down the 201 to Toronto. Good riddance.

  • Ha you're funny. I not only accept the French character of MTL but I also used to be a french language tutor part time, teaching you Quebecers how to write in your own language, how about that? And when I walk from Westmount where we live to Downtown, let me tell you that unilingual anglos are present and they do not have much difficulty conducting business in this area. In General the Québecois de souche hate Montreal because "rien que des Anglais" live there.

  • Still pissed off about losing the French and Indian War in 1763 , Frenchy ? / Pissé toujours au loin au sujet de perdre la guerre française et d'Indien en 1763, à la français ? lol bloody frog

  • Nope Montreal is basicly the Bilingual part of quebec, equal amount of french and eng. I live here and im English and I go to school with all english but I can speak french as well.

  • Montreal is more French than English, although most people have some grasp of both languages.

Some regions of Montreal and more English while others, mainly French.

The city is warm and welcoming even if you dont speak french...so I wouldnt worry to much if I were you ; )

  • The hottest Bi boys in Montreal, the women are over rated!! lol

  • THE Best girls are up here! In Montreal! best city !

  • I can't believe how much people hate us. If we're that shitty why bother ? Go to Tim Hortons or some shit and fuck off.

  • Am from San Antonio, Texas and have visted montreal i think it beauitful how both language can co-exist. I think it important to know both language in Quebec.

personally being 150 miles from the mexican border and english being the main language in Texas and the USA if one knows spanish here that a huge advantage in the market verse knowing english only!!

I dont even live near or in Quebec and I know French!

YOU ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLE IN MONTREAL NEED TO LEARN FRENCH!! SHAME ON YOU!

  • Lol Bein La Majorite des personne d'anglais peux parle le francais aussi au quebec. I was born in an eng house hold in montreal and everyone i know can speak french so i don't know what ur talkin about.

  • about 90% of the english speaking population in montreal are bilingual

  • And what about the protection of french language? You agree about the fact of destroying an entire culture? If 1 million French would come in your city for living and they would don't care about English, would you like to see the English language in danger? I know the English community is big in Montreal but do you think it's normal. I don't know why I'm debating with you, you have a canadian mentality, I have a french mentality.

  • I'm not against the separation of Quebec from Canada but I think there's always a way to agree about different subjects peacefully even if we have a completly different opinion about something. Where is Montreal grographically situated? It is situated in the province of Quevec and what's the official language of that province? It's French so I don't care about english community in Montreal, they get out of here or they respect the provincial civil laws.

  • YanBrassard: Honestly, I think we can find some common ground here. I, personally, think Canada would be a much better place without Quebec. Quebec has been a thorn in english Canada's side for ages. As far as I'm concerned, the quicker Quebec separates from Canada, the better.

My only concern would be the way an independent Quebec would treat its minorities; namely the thousand of anglophones and allophones in the province.

  • T'est tellement con jeromebamley...

  • thats a stupid thing to say. havent u learned anything from history? The way to deal with problems related to minorities is not to throw them all in one place, idiot! And what of non-quebecois french-canadians? If quebec seperated, they would lose tons of rights! And as u said urself, theres a big non-francophone population in quebec (mainly montreal), so u cant use as an excuse "everyone here is francophone and in the rest of canada anglophone"

    moron

  • let them do exactly as they please

que vous voulez. its Torontos gain

  • Actualy there saying if quebec ever became a nation (witch it won't just look at tht facts) Montreal aka were all the anglephones live would become part of ontario , problem solved=]

  • yes, but the official language of the city itself is french AND english, like for the entire country, which means that by law, in the city of montreal, all public thing have to be bilingual and private services can be english or french...in fact, more francophones disobey the law than anglophones come to think of it...and u forget way to easily that quebec culture is HUGELY influenced by the british

  • @goldenchocolate

Actually you don't really know the law here. You just know the law according th the Canadian constitution, not according to the Quebec constitution. The Quebec government voted a law called "Loi 101", which makes French as the ONLY official language of the WHOLE Quebec province. And I think I know my geography enough to say that Montreal is located INSIDE of the Quebec province.

  • @goldenchocolate Canada is english/french, but the city of Montreal is itself french above all. This law is just for administrativ things.

  • YanBrassard: A "Canadian" mentality? What's a "Canadian" mentality?

BTW, you certainly don't have a "French" mentality, you have a typical "Quebecois" mentality.

  • the french language is in no danger, thats just paranoid

  • You certainly do you have a huge chip on your shoulder. I t comes frmo your people losing a war 240 years ago. get over it.

look if you want your own country then

vote for it. just quit whining and bitching

my god.. its a shame Montreal is a fabulous city put that persecution complex you people have has cost Montreal its economic dominance to Toronto, if you dont like english people or toehr minorites kick them outs your loss

    and Torontos gain frenchy

  • Wow dude ,no i mean ... shut up ? cause you really dont know what youre talking about

  • I was planing to vist Montreal in March of 2008 for first time but found out it still winter there with snow! Am from south Texas where our winters are 40F. I planing on July 2009 for some parades that are going on there! I think I know enough french to get by.

  • you dont have to speak french if you go to montreal.. i mean in downtown its so english! you wont have any problems unless you go to quebec city loll ^^

  • If you're thinking of moving to Montreal, please make the effort to learn French...

  • yan ta raison, mais y'a tellement de francais qui parle pas anglais aussi, so manny french don't talk english in montreal too, i think we all need to do a effort

  • Chaque individu a la responsabilité d'adopter les deux langues. Le français étant la langue officielle de la province et l'anglais étant la langue internationale. Everybody has the responsibility to speak two languages. French as the official language of the province and English as the international language.

  • YanBrassard: Why learn french? Montreal is practically english anyway retard! ;)

  • If you think Montreal is practically English, that's because you are retared...

Montreal is practically bilingual, yes. If you're thinking of moving to Montreal, you must make the effort to learn French because we have big problems right now with language in Montreal. People come to live in but they don't speak a word of French. Some people are still thinking that the official language of Montreal is English but they're totally wrong...

  • YanBrassard: Listen folks, trust me, you don't need to know a *single* word of french to live in Montreal. The anglophone community in Montreal, much to the dismay of people like YanBrassard, is quite strong and influential. Sure, there might be francophone areas but go to any store in downtown Montreal and guess what language you'll hear the clerks speaking; you guessed it right, ENGLISH!.

  • I was raised by an english dad and a french mom and I live in the LaSalle part of Montreal. I can tell you, I know some 75 people who dont speak one french word...I wish they would...but its a fact that you dont have to speak french to live in Montreal. Much of the western part of the island is English and there are many english school.

Speaking both languages though, is an asset.

  • wow , i can see that you love montreal :)

i want go to move montreal is beautyfull city

I have one little hope for go to live there :)

  • Looks beautiful but is it really as bad as you say it is? I was planning on visiting because I have always wanted to go there but I dont know much about it either.

  • as a native quebecois , i must say montréal is the new york of canada, it is very interesting do not listen to him, lots and lots of things to do why do you think it hosted the olympics, very beautiful indeed not bad at all offcourse i moved to ontario for personal reasons but i definitely love montreal and recommend it, you should go

  • If you like Tim Hortons go to Toronto. Worst fuckin' donuts on earth. Enjoy !

  • haha how come?

  • hehe.. it's viet music in the background lmao xD
