  • We have quiet a few of these here in Regina, SK, but their slowly being replaced by the new nova's

  • @appleguy133 That's what I've been hearing. So sad. I hope that some of you guys decide to preserve these buses like some people here are doing.

  • @MysticMTL Good thing is that the city of Regina just bought an old one from like 1955 or something and they plan on using it sometime soon.

  • @MysticMTL I also see these buses regularily here in Saskatoon.

  • I love these buses to death.

everything about them, the look, ride and sound is just Awesome.

too bad Greater Sudbury Transit retired theirs.

  • @northlanderdude There are only a handful left in service in Eastern Canada, and out west there are still a good number in Edmonton, but for how long.

  • I love this one ! Old bus is very cool !!

  • As of July 2011 people, there are like 35 Fishbowls remain in the TTC's surface bus fleet and are confined to Mount Dennis garage which they are restricted to 52 Lawrence West, a last non-accessible prune route in the daytime network (352 rarely gets it as it's full of VIIs). The last of them will be gone by the end of 2012, excluding the final 2 which they will keep for historical and charter use and purposes.

Better film, fan, ride, and picture them while you can!

  • C'était les meilleurs bus ceux là :D

  • There are about 75 GM New Looks left in Toronto in service, and there is supposed to be about 50 until the end of next year when the rest will be retired except for 2 which will kept kept for historic reasons.

There were also 6 GM New Looks in Gatineau, Quebec, but now they are down to 1. A friend of mine was able to buy one a few weeks ago from 1977 that was just retired. And another friend bought one from 1982! Right now the one left is from 1979, still in service today!

  • @MysticMTL ohh, i thought it was the same person who owns 7757 and 8202. i also know there's an ex-STM 59-xxx Classic for sale on kijiji. it's located in Kentville, Nova Scotia

  • Umm. These kind of busses are still in my citys transit fleet...

  • @largerPOTATO Where do you live? Toronto?

  • @MysticMTL Saskatoon

  • @largerPOTATO Really? That is sooooo cool. Where do you live? It truly does my heart good to know that here in 2010, these buses are still rolling strong in a transit agency somrwhere. It amazes me because the GM New Look Bus overall desighn has now been in existance for AT LEAST 50 years now. Thats why I'd like to know what city is your bus fleet in. And is it here in America or Canada?

  • @Oaklandgirlpitlover1

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. My city 'just' got 3 of those new bendy buses. From what you usually see, it is the newerish cube type buses and some of these GM New Looks.

  • STO has to be the nicest company around nice video

  • ok thanks keep me posted

  • thanks dude and do you know when the next bus charter in laval is?

  • @MrTransitfan Laval? Not sure, we had 2 this year already, there's nothing much left worth chartering in Laval since they retired most of their old buses during the last year. There will probably be two or so charters in Montreal to bid farewell to the MCI Classics, and the same thing for the RTL on the south shore, since we have an internal contact to help keep the costs down.

  • ok thanks and do you know which company buys busses off of the stl and the stm?

  • @MrTransitfan A few years ago you could have found STL and STM buses in Quebec City or Levis, but now every company seems to be able to afford brand new, so the buses are sold to parts dealers and are stored either for years or salvaged for parts. Capital Bus Parts is a major player that takes a lot of retired Montreal area buses.

  • hey does anybody know were i could get 2 gm newlook fareboxes?

  • @MrTransitfan the new look fareboxes were the same ones used in all of the Montreal buses for the last hundred years, but they've since been replaced by electronic boxes, and the old ones have disappeared...

  • My guess is that you should be able to obtain some from a transit museum in your area, I know the New York City Transit Museum has a few GM New Looks in their bus fleet that they operate on special occasions, You could try calling them and seeing if they have a couple of New Look fareboxes that they might be willing to sell, Or you could do a Google search by typing in something like "General Motors New Look Bus Fare Boxes For Sale" I'm sure there must be at least some still around somewhere.

  • if i ever go to quebec or toronto i have to go on those buses, i havnt been on that bus that pulled out since i was like 5 or 6 and they have a get together with all the old buses? i wish they had that here

  • @Jsouthwell2006 Atleast a few buses like this are preserved and saved by a handful of transit fans. A group in Montreal has 6 of them in their collection, and a friend of mine has one too. (You can look through my videos, his bus is #33-003).

  • we have the exact same buses in vancouver canada, but unlike you guys we got rid of ours and got some new models

  • @Jsouthwell2006 There are only a handful of buses like this left in Quebec. I really have to make a trip to Toronto to see the most New Looks left in the world!

  • @MysticMTL if i ever go to quebec or toronto i have to go on those buses, i havnt been on that bus that pulled out since i was like 5 or 6 and they have a get together with all the old buses? i wish they had that here

  • Je suis utilisé pour voir avec le démarreur aérien sur le bus mais peu ont vraiment le démarreur de 24 volts dans là

  • We retired the last 11 of our GMC New Looks in 1994. I still miss them!

  • Thankfully there are atleast still 4 left at the STO in Hull, and there are still close to 200 left in Toronto. Probably the largest concentration of New Looks left in service in the world I would think now. Montreal retired the remaining 200 of their New Looks all at once though back in December 2002 and so I won't be surprised if one day Toronto says that's it, and no more New Looks. So I really need to get down there and photograph as much as I can while I still can.

  • what's the engine of this thing?

  • It's the real deal: Detroit Diesel 6V71! 3 Speed Automatic. There are still some around, they use them in GM Classics as well as the New Looks operating with the TTC and the restored Montreal New Looks. (33-008 / 25-085 / 14-008 - Exception of the 33-003 which uses an 8V71 and can be seen in my other videos).

  • fiou! thanks!!

  • I grew up on Boston T New Looks. I'm visiting Boston again in April, for the first time in a long time. Anyone know if there are any New Looks in service in the Boston area at all?

  • I've been wondering if the mbta kept any too, haven't seen any in service around boston though. i know that they have some in Maine at the seashore trolley museum though

  • Interesting... does said trolley museum use the busses, or are they just on display?

  • They have a gathering once per year in the fall that I really would like to attend this year where they bring out all their old buses and give rides to people.

  • Maybe see you there!

  • No, always electric. Montreal always had electric starters on their buses.

  • This is a 1982 bus from Montreal, but the STO labelled it as 8310 for 1983 bus #10. Too bad it's retired now, but the STO still has a few New Looks left in service, one from 1977 still! :)

  • What is the STO? (What does it stand for?) I'm trying to find places I could ride in a New Look one last time... especially one that it is still in public service. I know about Toronto... is that the STO?

  • STO = Societe Transport Outaouais, it's in Hull / Gatineau Quebec, just over the river from Ottawa, Ontario. They still have a bus from 1977 in operation and others from the early 80's still in daily rush hour service!

  • @andyofvermont societe de transport de l outeouais

  • shit ca fais longtemps!

  • oh how I miss riding in these!

  • It's a shame that there aren't as many as there used to be, but atleast we have been able to save a few. It's not the same as riding on them everyday in service, but atleast we'll have them to enjoy for years to come.

  • i live in front of the bellchase one and they usually have one of those parked outside

  • Yup! Those are ours that we fix up at Bellechasse. The one that's currently inside is the 1965 Metropolitain Provincial New Look (With the purple spot) #7296. Previously we had 55-001 a 1985 GM Classic to do mechanical and body work in there.

  • wow i dont see those busses any more last time i saw it was when i was 3

  • Four fishbowls are still active at the STO. 7742 , 7757, 7901 and 8202. 8202 is my favourite.

  • I've watched all your vids, they are great! Do you know how many Fishbowls are left in the Montreal area? I know they are not in service, but in storage? I would certainly like to buy one. What do you think would be an appropriate price for any Fishbowl like the 8310 or 33-003?

  • Sadly 8310 was retired and has then since been taken away. 33-003 isn't for sale, and is already privately owned. 33-008 is owned by a heritage foundation, and 24-069 was gutted and then towed away. The only New Look right now that has yet to be restored and is still on STM property is 25-085, the last Transit GM New Look to be purchased by the CTCUM in 1982. Plans are not yet confirmed on what will be done with this vehicle. Other than that, there are no more New Looks left in Montreal.

  • that is really too bad. Thanks for the info and the sub!

  • Condition when they were retired, they'd probably worth less than $2000, but completely restored, maybe $10,000 - 15,000. (Maybe more, depends on how well they were rebuilt, 8310 was never rebuilt, and it showed, lots of holes in the frame, front and rear separation from the base, rust and other various failings, so it would probably cost more to rebuild than it would every be worth again sadly.

  • That's too bad, I might just have to settle for a classic!

  • Well, we're currently working on a 1985 GM Classic, CTCUM #55-001. (No back window). If all goes as planned it should be ready for the road this spring. Hopefully at the same time we'll get to rebuild #25-085 (1982 GM New Look), it's still waiting to be rebuilt.

  • nice!

  • i remember wen i was baby i went in this bus but i dont know how many time

  • It was recently retired, but as you can see, with no further major repairs since it was retired by the STCUM back in 2002, this bus has lasted until the summer of 2007! (And the engine is still A1, but the body is showing it's age).

  • Speed!

  • It's amazing that there are still companies in Canada that use New Looks as their major source of transportation. Unfortunately Montreal was 2003, Quebec City was 2005 and Ottawa, Canada was 2007.

  • It appears that we were the last people to ride on this bus since they have now unfortunately retired this vehicle from active service and it awaits its fate along the side of the garage...

  • does it have original engine

  • We opened it up and checked inside, and it appears to be original. It was very dirty, and really needed some maintenance, But I guess they were planning on retiring it, so it didn't really matter. :(

  • I believe it was a Detroit Diesel 6V71, eh!

  • Yes, you're right about this one. Everything seems original to when the STCUM retired it. So it has a 6V71 engine inside.

  • Thanks.

  • Nice, really nice! I LOVED that startup a lot!!

  • It's always nice to see and hear a New Look starting up and running, especially after over 25 years of service, and pushing 2 million KM's. It's still going strong.

  • Great video, love to see more classic and gmc new look bus videos. A lot of more gmc new look buses could of still been running. ttc retired a lot of gmc new look buses just because of age in 1994 when with a rebuild they could of ran much longer. sto is a great system love to see a video of this bus as it is in service.

  • That's it. The engines and structures of these buses are built like rocks. The only reason they're being retired is because of age. This bus is 25 years old this year, and the other one we photographed is 27 years old, and they have others still in service topping at 30 years in service. These buses were built to last the test of time, and especially our harsh climate too!

  • Edmonton transit has gmc new look buses running that are 35 years old, with another rebuild they can run 5 more years till 40 years old. The ttc retired gmc new look buses after just 14 to 17 years old. Waste move rebuilding them every 6 years they can run up till 40 years old and parts can even be made in machine shops so they do not get canibilized.
