its a pretty common method in genetical research to attach the code of a luminescent protein to the code of a know or unknown protein to see what that protein does or where in the cell or body it is expressed.
check the 50year cell division puzzle vid from newscientist for another use of this method.
what other method there is, is to attach a substratetriggerable inhibitor to the gene and then add or remove that substrate in order to see how the cell does with and without that protein.

they were able to insert genes like that into cloned cats in south korea that causes parts of their skin to glow in the dark.
