@Justin5637 An AC6000 have 65000 lbs more starting tractive effort than a big boy even though big boys are far heavier and the AC6000 has 1 prime mover.
Put those on a 3% grade, the steamer will win. I remember when steam was used to rescue the Diesels that stalled out on grades. Horsepower means nothing to the steamers, it's the torque they put out. 1945 to 1952 I used to engineer the old Baldwin Steamers for Santa Fe Railway. Excellent 5 star video.
big boys will always out pull anything on the rails. they were built to pull heavy loads. thats it. nothing could ever be close to how mighty they were
@googooman12 Do some research before you say that an AC6000 has 65,000 lbs more starting tractive effort than a big boy and they only have 1 prime mover they'll out pull a big boy.
diesel EMD DDA40X 6600 horse power, the big boy was big in is time. time of steam engine's, but now is time for a diesel engine's. a es44 ac is more powerfull that the big boy, now imagine a dda40x...
@gatoterry Not true look it up an ES44 has more starting tractive effort than a big boy. They could out pull it not in speed but if you put them coupler to coupler and had a tug of war the ES44 would out pull it. If the couplers wouldn't snap it could pull it back.
@gatoterry i hear from a pretty good source in Cheyenne that the 4000 class could make around 9,700 hp at the draw bar but only after 65 mph. never saw proof. but that's what the word was
That DDA40X is like a diesel version of the Big Boy. It's long and has 2 sets of 8 driving wheels. But the Big Boy looks way cooler and goes faster! It barely needs helper engines to pull frieght. It can do perfect by itself and be right on time.
OH COME on, you controlled the throttle... you set it so the Big Boy would win. now if you put both at full throttle and let them go, the Big Jack would kick A**!!!!
you know if they could take the fire pit out of the engine and put elsuper ectic heating tubes think of it this way the try had a steam generator it could power its self aslong as it had water.
This would be the sort of coordination needed to film a UP/Alco Big Boy on the job; now, if only we could've gotten some footage of the engineer, fireman and front brakeman at work in #4016's cab.... ;-)
and i dont if this works for a kinda of train engines but from what i know wheel size counts too a guy told me that this bigger the wheel the more surface it cover and i think steam engine wheels the big boy's wheels in this case are bigger the DD's wheels thus the big boy would go a little faster at the same speed. On trainz 2006 i havent done a speed test on the big boy but i know the DD max speed i got was 89 mph with 25 unloaded cars.
@dukes20084 You don't make any sense, at the same speed, the BB wouldn't go faster, IT WOULD GO THE SAME SPEED! Theres a bunch of different gearing and shit that you wouldn't understand with steam engines and diesels. The farther out towards the edge of the drive wheel the crank pin is, the more torque the steam engine will get, but less speed. It's just like rebuilding 350 Jag engine and giving it a deeper stroke, the deeper the stroke, the more acceleration and torque you get, but less speed.
@CowsXonXcrack i made a few mistakes when i typed that srry but you are right wat i was trying to say the BB would still be going the same speed but would be covering more surface area then the DD... Right?
Saw Big Boy 4017 at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, WI yesterday. You just can't appreciate how enormous they are until you're standing next to one.
@knules2 Steam is only an environmental disaster if you burn the right fuel. If you were to fill that tender with pellets of dried algae or a natural oil and it'd be running carbon-neutral. They shouldn't be particularly dangerous either i you were to make a new one with a sealed-off, air-conditioned cab with computer controls to deal with the fire, instead of some dude with a shovel. The real problem with steam is that they have to stop a lot for water, which takes time and money.
@JETZcorp actually later steam engine often didn't have to stop because they had put trays to catch rain water and the engines would have a scoop to pick it up as it went
@knules2 If you're looking for nostalgia, then I suppose you should keep them coal-burning and spewing smoke and all that. But unfortunately, that's already over with because in the steam giants running today, such as 844 and 3985, they have already been converted to oil-burning, so the nostalgia of shoveling coal is already replaced by a valve and a pump or something.
I'm talking about what you'd do if you set out to make a brand new steamer fort he 21st Century, model year 2011.
@Fireheart528 Were you saying its more powerful in HP? That statement is true. But in ability to pull a very heavy train an AC6000,AC4400,Dash 9, SD70ACe/M-2, or SD90/43/80MAC is better for the job. I still love steam engines though. If they can start the train they can pull it to higher speed than a diesel.
@bradstrains Yeah, all they need is a bit of a push. How did he get the camera to do that, though? I have Fraps and have only uploaded one 30 second segment of of Trainz. Pure speed and a Gresly A3 would smoke the DDA40X most likely.
@deloreanman14 The Gresley BR A3 Pacific does that too-its beaten three diesels so far. I know bc i raced it against them. I'll upload one when i can.
dd wasnt built for speed it was built for replacing the big boy purpose of getting trains over sherman hill and cajone pass because it had more power and torque it only reached its max speed on excursions and possibly high speed freights
