This has been my source of frustration for a long time, People who think they have the right of way when turning into on coming traffic. You should fail you driving test or your license revoked if you don't understand this concept. Could you please do another PSA on merging on the highway next? Got to love the people who speed-up when you are trying to merge and people trying to merge at 60km/h into 100km/h traffic.
@hoopz2598 ugh...I guess it's "continued above". When there's heavy traffic arriving to a four-way stop and pairs of cars across from each other are arriving to the line at the same time, the person turning left across from a person going straight must always wait. but the rule is basically this:
whomever arrives at a four-way *stop* first, gets to go first.
when arriving at a four-way *intersection* at about the same time as another person, you must yield to the driver on your right.
@hoopz2598 yes! he does. :) when there is an intersection with a stop sign/light, whomever arrives first gets to go whether or not they're going straight or turning. but if they arrive at the same time, it's the person going straight who always gets to go first.
I've been driving for almost a year and I figured I should get my confusion w/ four way stops handled. I know it is a first come first serve type thing......but I sort of get confused when there's a lot of people at the four way stop from all directions then I'm wondering when it's going to be my turn to go......I've always heard that "it's the person on the right that goes next if you get there at same time" well.....that makes no sense. To the right of what? Person who just went??
@hoopz2598 Good questions! First: a four-way intersection is a place where traffic comes from four directions, but there are no lights. A four-way stop is the same except there is a blinking light.
At a four-way *intersection*, if you arrive at the same time as a driver coming from the street to your right, you have to wait for them. Here's why that's the law: the driver who yields is the one who, if they were to go, would strike the driver's side door. hopefully continued below.
@hoopz2598 and that's why the person to your left must yield to you; if they were to go, they would strike your driver's side door. It's just playing the odds. There's always a driver, so that's who should be protected when deciding who should go first at a four-way intersection.
Now, at a four-way stop, you really just have to understand that whoever arrives at the line first gets to go first, no matter what direction, and no matter if they're turning or going straight. continued below
@iphoneftwpwnwtfbbq - Yep. I was giving the example that when you're at a stop light, everyone knows that you don't wait for a person who is turning left from the opposite direction to go ahead and go before you go straight; you go straight, and then they turn left when it's clear. The same principle holds at a four-way-stop: you don't wait for a person across from you to turn left in front of you before you go. You go straight and then they turn left behind you once you've passed.
who the intersections in america are confusing i live in england at a roundabout it similar you give way to the car aproaching from the right simple in usa 4 way stop sign confusing give way to car thats there first lol
It is simple the driver that gets their gets to go first. If all you get their at the same time driver to the right gets to go simple is that. If you are not sure just let the person go.
A 4-way stop is based on first come, first serve.........................people waste time at 4-way stops because there is always confusion on who gets there first, not "who's turning and who is going straight"....................these are the idiots I can't stand, ie this guy in the video; thinking he is right about something hes completely wrong about (ex not everyone in the world uses their blinkers...so how do you know who is turning in those situations???) think about it
I have a question. what if the green car and truck arrive first before the blue and green trucks? do the follow the same rules as the blue and green trucks? or do they wait. Maybe you answered this in your video but that is what confuses me.
@KralTube2 If you haven't seen them already, you should watch the videos by Reckless Tortuga. Specifically "The Online Gamer" and "Black Ops". They're the best.
That's not how the rules work in Washington State, its first come/first serve:
"At a four-way stop the driver reaching the intersection first, goes first (after coming to a complete stop). If more than one vehicle arrives at the same time, the vehicle on the right goes first."
You are completely right. No question there. It drives me batshit when people come to a four-way stop AND THEN WAIT FOR AN APPROACHING DRIVER FROM THE OPPOSITE WAY TO ARRIVE AND COME TO A STOP!!!
It's like they have some stupid timing mechanism in their head that they follow like a robot that tells them they can't leave unless they're coordinated with another car like a synchronized swim team!
I'm talking about traffic at a 4-way-stop with lots of traffic that is stop-and-go from all sides
I don't understand what they're waiting for... you don't need the other person to be there to start going...why do they always wait for you to pull up! Aghh! Then there's the people that drive with two feet and their car keeps lurching as they try to go when its not their turn.
@stringaline Lets say you are stopped at a four way and wait for the cars on your left and right to go, but there is a car opposite you and you both move out into the interesection at the same time, does the one who stopped first have the right to turn left in front of your car? (because he had stopped a half second or so before you did because the cars on your left and right were going)
@SmokeRingsPipeDreams No! Absolutely not. They have the exact same rights, just as if they had pulled up to a stoplight together and the light turned green. However, if one of them is stopped and the one across from them is just pulling up and just coming to a stop, the person who is already stopped has the right of way, AND SHOULD GO, and DEFINITELY not wait for the person across from them to come to a complete stop before going; that would be more of that insane machinery in people's minds.
@SmokeRingsPipeDreams The reason why I asked is this. I have an ongoing argument with a friend. Several times I have pulled up to a four way stop, with a car opposite me. After the cars on our left and right have gone through, I move out into the intersection only to have the guy across from me immediatly take a left turn that would hit me if I continued going straight. My friend says they have the right of way because they stopped at their stop sign a second or two before I stopped at mine.
@SmokeRingsPipeDreams - they absolutely DO NOT have the right-of-way. It is just like a stoplight. If both people are going at the same time, the left turn person ALWAYS should wait.
@stringaline That is what I would think too. But my ex wife insists that the person who stopped first has the right to make left hand turns in front of oncoming traffic even if they both left their stop signs at the same time. We have a four way stop near where I live where people do this a lot. (turn left in front of me) They do this most of the time without even signalling the turn. I go straight and they scream at me and flip me off. I feel the car going straight has right of way.
@SmokeRingsPipeDreams Cont: Even though we both moved out at the same time after the cars opposite were done. It is my claim that just getting to the stop sign first (before the car opposite you) does not give that car the right to take left turns and obligating cars going straight (opposite to them) to yield to them. My friend insists that the car that stopped first has absolute right to make left turns into oncoming traffic and that oncoming traffic must yield because of that.
@SmokeRingsPipeDreams he has the right of way to turn left if he arrived before the car opposite him. definitely. at the four-way near my house there are often BIG lines of cars. so one set goes, then the next come to the line and it's their turn. the point is, when you get to the line at the same time as the person opposite you (as always happens when you have large lines) the left turn person must wait and proceed as in the video.
This has been my source of frustration for a long time, People who think they have the right of way when turning into on coming traffic. You are cracking me up! Felt like you were a kindergarten teacher! LOL
I keep having the 4 way stop argument with people. Never turn left "in front of" oncoming traffic. And you go 2 by 2....NOT 1 at a time.
Very simple, not sure why people don't get it.
Thank You. I am passing this along to all the people who keep arguing with me.
