The whole 'i beg your pardon/new orleans' songs was recorded from a show in England called "Loose Talk" in which both the crowd and interviewer prodded at Tom...picking fun. Then he got up there and played...it was just beautiful. I hate arrogance.
I love his hair on the piano songs. All wavy and out of control in the front. His face was beautiful during this time period also. And oh yeah, he's a musical, poetic genuis.
I've been working for years now to get this voice, It's harder then it looks. It's easy to shout it, but to sing it with such fines is what give it it's extra touch. So, i'm out to drink more johnny's.
Actually, Tom used to scream in a pillow when he was young in order to get an "older" voice. Not that smoking and whiskey won't affect your voice, but it's probably a combination of the polyps he developed screaming, relentless touring when younger and, yes, it's part of his act.
oh jesus, another anti smoking nazi. obviously his voice is naturally like this, porbably because of smoking, you can hear its effortless. the only way to get near to this voice is to start smoking right now. as much as you can. if your young you can get a good headstart on this
Lol, you say he got that voice on purpose? Did he say that in an interview? You can't believe anything he says in an interview! He once said, of his "talking voice", that he only talks like that "on the weekends"! Hahaha. And you think his mother was a tree? I know it wasn't accidental, I know he does it on purpose. But I don't think that he had to go to an extra effort beyond either lifestyle or just having amazing control over his voice and tone. Imo.
Original recording is on the One From The Heart soundtrack, 1982 ^_^ I heard it on the radio one day and bought it just for this song. The rest is ok. I don't really like Crystal Gale very much so that sort of wrecks it for me, but love that Tom.
smoking doesn't affect the voice that much, and beer definitely even less. look up some bukowski clips and listen. he smoked and drank beer all his life and nothing.. waits shouted and growled his voice hoarse, faking it for a long time (and still does it at times). it was an artificial technique. the cigarrettes and drinking were only something to cover this up with, to make himself seem more believable to the public. i'm only saying this knowing that young waits fans will easily romantisize
Ssamppas: I knew that forcing the voice was part of his "stage persona", at first. But from the middle of the 80's, his vocal chords really got messed up. And I know by my own experience that combining cold beer and hot cigarettes is not the most healthy thing for anyone's throat.
But i understand your point, it was all part of the act.
I'm absolutely agree. Listen, for example, the latest gliter and doom tour live recordings. He still can sing high notes at his 60. If voice was affected, he couldn't. Awesome artificial technique really))
While being well written, I do not agree with the use of "faking" in your comment; it implies that he puts people under the pretense of that being his "real" voice. He uses his signature growl because he thinks it fits well with his type of music. Also, he openly stopped smoking in 1980, well before his vocals reached their gritty peak.
How the voice came about...was a single show. He went out on stage hoarse from the night before and he thought he did horrible...but the people came up to him after the show claiming that he'd never been better.
I Beg Your Pardon...I listened to it over and over 'till I was drunk on the song. Such a unique voice attached to a universal theme...I Beg your Pardon, I Beg Your Pardon, etc.....Thanks for sharing....
It's funny how Tom Waits uses his voice to such an effect. He uses his first album circa1973 voice singing while driving the Jag in the movie Down by Law, with no hoarseness or gravel, and that was filmed in the mid-eighties. People wonder if the gravel-hoarse voice is real, or affected or what. He uses his voice as an instrument, as he does his piano and guitar.
PlatonicFriend, do you know how much time he spent howling into that pillow of his? Because if you ever meet me, you will instantly recognize me by my wannabe Tom Waits voice
There is amazing footage of Tom in the studio recording "Gospel Train" for his Black Rider album where he screams and screams violently right before he starts to sing to acheive the right sound to his voice. The way he can manipulate his voice is incredible to me.
Thank you Tom. Without you, I'd still be Portland through ashotglass with a buffalo squeezin'. I like the haircut...I believe it's from the Ironweed film. Ironweed should be on DVD. Everyone else, find Cold Feet, it's on DVD. It's Tom's biggest, maddest, funniest role he's ever done. It will make you smile. He gets to have his Klaus Kinski moment at the end. Maybe this is Cotton Club hair.
He matched these two songs perfectly.

Who cares weather his voice was forced or not, do you think that opera singers talk like they sing, it's all about how the songs sound.
stickyjam1 2 years ago 14
exactly, it sounds awesome! That's all that matters!

Even if he did force it to sound that way, then I consider him a genius for coming up with it!

Actually Tom admitted to deliberately straining his voice to get that raspy sound. Naturally, lifestyle has punctuated the affect.

this voice "technique" was achieved with an intensive training of smoking 2 packs a'day and 6 freezy beer. Bad ass voice...

he actually did change his voice. He would yell into a pillow to deepen his voice. He heard that alot of actors did it.
