We come across BIG alligator snapping turtles from time to time around my house across from wetlands (glorified midwestern SWAMP) =) My wife and I keep collapsible brooms in our cars to "scoot" them off of the road, otherwise they become turtle tar tar... Those critters are FAST and MEAN! definitely not something you want to get your fingers or any other important body parts near. =)

For one, this was NOT an alligator snapping turtle. Their claws are.... not "razor" sharp in the least (not saying they wont scratch you up). And their necks can reach probably near the back of their front legs, MAYBE. Like IDremOI said... You can safely handle any turtle as long as you have some common sense.

I've encountered only one snapping turtle and the way we dealt with it was to distract it and approach from behind, then pick it up by the sides. We lobbed it in the lake and ran for dear life.
