please anybody here who can tell me who of the girls is who - want to check in wikipedia - but dont know who is who. thanks. köszönöm. eycharisto. danke. dakujem. merci. hvala.
I just heard this on BBC Radio 4 ("The Paper Round" series, Tony McCaulay episode) and I thought it was Hazel O'Connor singing !
A bit more research led me here. Great song and interesting to find out that it wasn't released in Canada or the US because the political context of the song.
Apparently, it was written by Drafi Deutscher for Marcia Barrett when she was solo, but when she sang it with Boney M on tour is was so popular they added it to their second album.
@burlearth - Northern Ireland and its capital Belfast, has been disputed to be occupied land for over 450 years. The Republic of Ireland laid claim to it until quite recently and see it as their land occupied by the UK. Belfast especially has been an epicentre of terrorism since 1970 and the IRA (terrorist organisation) was allegedly partly funded by donations from North America by decendants and immigrants from Ireland.
@Enerjee eh, I'm from Dublin and again your reply doesn't answer my question since the single was released both in Ireland and the U.K. so there's no real sane reason it shouldn't have been released in the US or Canada since the song is not biased towards either side during the troubles.
@burlearth - I don't know why it wasn't released in the USA or Canada, I'm just stating that it was. I presume the usual knee-jerk reactions took place in both of those countries and there was media reaction to the song mentioning Belfast and so offsetting any potential arguments.
The single "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" by Wings in 1972 was banned in the UK for probably similar reasons.
I know that "Belfast" isn't political, but that's what happens sometimes.
@Enerjee not allegedly. it was funded by many US citizens and corporations, right up until the "war on terror" when they decided against being hypocrites for once :P
@ByGeorgeous - yeah I know. It was just after "9/11" when Bush said that he'd launch a war on terror wherever it was that the IRA announced it would no longer use violence to further its cause. Coincidence eh? The leaders of the IRA are part of a political party called Sinn Féin. There are still regular bombings in Northern Ireland, but by the organisation that calls itself "The Real IRA". However, since 2001 there has been little if no terrorism from the IRA.
There was one thing that annoyed me during the Troubles, people from another Country putting their 2p's worth in. The outside world world thinks that Northern Ireland is a peaceful country, but what they do not realise is, the war is far from over.
Marcia you are so sexy and still are,Just been on your web site and you look great good look with the new cd out soon Please folk go by it this lady been through alot but still comes out smilling . love you to bits.xxxxxxxx
I wonder why Frank Farian gave Marcia the lead to this, I am glad he did though as she had the rightvoice for this song, Liz would have been good too, but this is Marcia's time and she deserves it, Love it.
A ' Forgotten Original' by Creation in '66, surprised this only got to number 36 in the U.K charts for them on the 3rd-Nov, their 2nd of 2 minor hits, the 1st being Making Time (#49, 7th-July-66), I suppose there were so many great bands in the 60s that some had to 'slip through the net'. As usual if you like a song you prefer the 1st version you heard & for me it was Boney M (U.K #10-28th-April-79), their 8th U.K hit. Their is 'something' about Marcia Barrett, quite pretty, good voice.
Marcia must have had some crappy management. She should have been a superstar in America. Those looks and that voice should have made her a household name.
this is one of my all time favourites. MARCIA is simply beautiful, nice to see on the lead and she has performed wonderfully. i think she should have given more oppurtunity. very good editing. thanks for highlighting MARCIA's beauty.
