  • I was born/raised in the Philly area and left in the 90s for the west coast. I've never really looked back at all until I stumbled upon these old channel 6 news videos on the internet. Watching them makes me feel nostalgic and old at the same time....... The last time I visited family back there I swear I saw some of these people still doing the news in Philly, although at least one switched stations if I remember correctly. The news people out here seem to come and go a lot more often.

  • I should my mom this she was like "OMG!!!!!!!!"!

  • I'm Jewish, FYI!!

  • I love it!! I was 10 years old..Wow, thanks for posting this, great memories...almost got emotional..LOL!!!

  • WPVI is probably the only station that still has the same feel it did before network ownership. CBS 3 is a far cry from what KYW 3 was, NBC 10 looks almost as if there never was a CBS era at that station, FOX 29 sure isn't the great station that TV 29 was, and WGTW 48 couldn't shine the shoes of the old WKBS.

  • damn, rob jennings must of been with action news for like 40 years with that slogan "the big story on action news"

  • talk about my past . i loved the intro to the news .. i moved away from philly in 95 and miss it

  • @whiskers1965 I hear that! I'm gonna miss that jingle when I'm in the U.K.

  • it seems like yesterday

  • Rob Jennings was a handsome man. Might still be for all I know.

  • That opening montage must have been filmed between 1976 and 1978, at least the hockey game was, because the Rangers only used those jerseys between those years.

  • Frighteningly, I still remember almost every clip in this opening. And I haven't watched regularly since I don't even know when.

  • The best news station ever is action news in Philadelphia there better than the national news stations

  • And the Eagles were still loosing.... Not much has changed over 30 years...

  • @bababooey2006

Loosing? What? Learn how to spell.

About the video...Chopper Six is usually in the middle of the opening video. In this one, it's at the end before the Action News logo appears.

  • Whoa, the Polish ambassador actually defected?

  • much respect to chopper 6

  • Now that's good news hair.

  • anybody remember the Green Grocer? This is Joe Carcione the green grocer- with-a-your-tip of the day.

  • That's clip is on here!

  • Classic Philly

I watch this video everytime I want to think about my dad Channel 6, PA Lottery, baseball thats all he needed

It brings a tear to my eye everytime. Now if I can find The Jimmy Auto Parts Commercial and the jingle from Main Line Saving & Loan, I could die a happy widow :)

  • I remember the Jimmy's Used Auto Parts song!! Well, most of it anyway... "Something.. .something.. something.. where saving money starts, at Jimmy's Used Auto Parts!"

  • The home of happy auto parts where saving money starts that's Jimmy's Used Auto Parts da do do do do.

  • That's it! I actually work with Jimmy's ex-wife. She said that she has recordings of those jingles. I should get one from her and post something up on YouTube. She might even have video. I'll have to check.

  • It aired on December 26, 1981.

  • Amen to that- to any of you who ever go on vacation to the Philadelphia area (either for touring, or just to visit relatives), I HIGHLY recommend 6-ABC to anybody who wants "100%, Grade-A, your-money's-worth" local news.

I still do that every time we go up to visit relatives (my mom's side of the family) in Boyertown, PA.

  • I was staying at a hotel in Atlantic City watching TV and then...WHAMMO!!! "ActionNews" with this theme song came on...I almost popped out of my bed, I hadn't heard this in YEARS. I wonder who wrote it? It's so old school, I hope they keep it FOREVER!!!

  • The viewers of Philly agree with you -- years ago WPVI tried replacing the original version (that goes back to the early '70s) with a new version recorded by a symphony orchestra. Angry viewers DEMANDED the original, and got it back.

The name of the song is "Move Closer To Your World," composed by the late Al Ham. Ham also was the musical director of the British stage musical hit "Stop The World: I Want to Get Off!"

We've got this in common, CWC. Wanna get a hotel room and talk about it? ;)

  • I would but alas, you don't have enough cool black tunes on your playlist!

  • I lived all over the U.S. and now Canada, and there has never been a better news show than Action News. I love this clip, would love to see a clip with Larry Kane when he was with Ch. 6.

  • I was hit with such a wave of nostalgia watching this. I remember every single person and action from that montage. It brought back such a strong feeling of being at my grandmother's house after school (4th grade), hearing her making dinner in the kitchen, me waiting patiently for my parents to get home from work so I could go back home. I can remember the smells...the crisp air outside...the feeling of being young and worry free. Wow. I miss you, Nana!

  • where is a channel 6 open from the seventies

  • Bobby Clarke at 0:12.

    Old skool Flyers, ftw!

  • I love the spectator's facial expression in frame 0:11. LOL

  • Does anyone have an earlier Channel 6 Action News opening?

  • Dr. J! Awright!

  • Love Channel 6!!!

  • os that peter jennings' bruther?

  • I don't believe so. Peter Jennings was born in Canada and had a sister, I don't think a brother.

  • That was random. And Rob Jennings is so young!!! I've never seen him with brown hair!

  • Wow, I recall the mime and the spaz at The Vet.

  • As I posted below, Jennings is WPVI's main weekend evening anchor (as of January 2008).

He also fills in for absent evening anchors during the week.

  • King Kong and Santa Claus, tailgating at the Birds game. Only in Philly folks, only in Philly.

  • does anyone have the 1973 tappes of wpvi tv 6/?

  • The Mime is scary!!!!!!!!!!

  • 'Round 0:17, doesn't that look like Rod Roddy?

  • If that's not the man himself, it's a very good lookalike.

  • Oh, you mean the one that used the theme from the 1981 movie, "The Stunt Man"?

Search under "KTRK Million Dollar Movie 1992" and you should find what you're looking for.

  • OMG that is the same exact one-graphics and all! Thank you so much! I'm not sure if Jeff Kaye aka The Voice of Channel 6 did the voice over for our version but now I am literally dancing in my chair with happiness. The WCAU Late Show is another one I fondly remember watching when staying up late at grandma's house-that's back when CBS was the old people's network.

  • I had the wpvi one on tape until a year or so, when it got taped over. I probably have another version, as I use to tape alot of movie off of 6, but I was lazy and never marked them good. Some dfay, when I have time i'm gonna go thru old tapes, and probably find all kinds of great clips.

  • Does anyone in my age group (mid to late 20s) remember the bumper ID for WPVI's "Million Dollar Movie?" It had this loud horn arrangement that was a little scary. If anyone could post that or clips from Joe the Green Grocer, that would be awesome.

  • im 28 and i SOOO remember that. I remember once i woke up and it was playing on my tv and i had to pee and ended up going in my bed because i was afraid of the dark lol. I miss those days, i would give up everything now to go back/

  • Boy, Rob Jennings is young!

  • For those not here in the Philly area, Rob Jennings has gotten rather round in the face and gray up top! He still anchors Action News on weekends.

Gary Papa (mentioned in the open) is still with WPVI as Sports Director, but he is fighting prostate cancer.

  • Man those people at Philly ABC channel 6 station have been forever lol. Jim Garder, Rob Jennings and Gary Papa still being around for over 30 years at that station. Quiet amazing.

When those guys leave, i don't think we see it again w/ anchors/reporters staying at a 'local station' that long.

  • I am glad this vid is back!

  • Man they really cranked up the bass on the music this time around, as it rumbles significantly more than any of the other audio. The action news title was very creative, but the sudden change to a mostly black screen jars the otherwise smooth transition.
