In Soul Calibur III, Ivy's weapon remains a solid blade throughout most of her animations. When it does extend, it's usually a controlled shape unlike a whip. I've tried it, it looks like crap, end of story.

The CAS mode is actually pretty weak (even after you've unlocked all the jobs/parts which takes a long time), and you can't use custom characters in all modes. So make sure you would enjoy the main game before buying it. It's only $20 though, and the greatest hits logo is only a sticker on the cellophane :)
