Of the other versions of this song, I like Kathy Taylor's. Ricky Dillard's distorts the Savior's name in the vamp. I actually heard Kathy Taylor sing it live and OMG!!! I can't think of too many that can do Myrna's song justice like Kathy. I think I'd all but lose my mind if Kathy and Myrna sang it together... Maybe someone should suggest it or did I just do that? lol
Very Inspiring song and the artist comes across as sincere and dedicated to the Lord. She appears to be a modest woman, something the Church needs more of.
Add Alvaneeda at the Memphis Convocation........That saint has a special relationship with Jesus, you can tell by the way she calls his NAME. ALL SOLOIST that I've heard on here, do a GREAT JOB...... Hint: If your background is going to be shabby and lagging; stop them........Don't let that go
I thought this was written by Margaret Dureaux ? I love this song...brings back wonderful memories...my grandma used to love this song and it reminds me so much of her. Precious Is His Naaaame....spirit-shakin' praise song
Jesus --- Jesus --- Jesus ...Precious is His Name....sis Summers is singing this song
on............AMEN. Ask my choirs, I'll stop them in a less than a blink of an eye......Do what you supposed to do and we'll give God the EXCELLENCE he deserves....Anything short of that, not acceptable!!!!!!!!!! AMEN!!!!
AMEN!!!!!!!! You're so right, but unfortunately God's people or "wanna be" people will do ANYTHING and think it's acceptable, or OK. As leaders, we don't allow it regardless of the backlash.
I often tell my choirs you do a good job at work to get that promotion or outstanding appraisal. God deserves nothing short of that. If it's your BEST, then great, but you know when it's not your best and you haven't prepared as you should. Now try giving all of those excuses to your boss and see what the outcome is??? AMEN!!
Oh, wow! I hadn't heard this version. I had only heard the 1977 GMWA version. I hope God has a special spot in heaven for Myrna Summers just for singing it. I wish it had been done at Bishop Patterson's funeral.
This comforted me after I failed in graduate school. I wish I had a list of highly skilled singers that my family could send for when my time comes. Oh, and especially the Hammond organist...whomever he or she is. I'd like to hear some trumpets after "Jesus" in the vamp.
Please post the Original "God Gave Me A Song" with the name of the composer's name off the album if available. Who wrote this song, was Sister Summers herself?
The GMWA version was done in 1976. The actual "original" version is on a record credited to Myrna Summers and the Myrna Summers Singers released in 1975. I may post it very soon.
Oh yes, I have that 1975 version too of "Oh How Precious", with Royce Bouknight, Dottie Jones, Rose Woods. Do you have the original "God Gave me a Song?" Thanks for the comment.
It's just kinda nice to hear how we change songs over the years. nothing wrong with that, we just do it! LOL And unfortunately I do not have "God Gave Me a Song" in my arsenal...yet!
Wow. Haven't heard this original in a very long time. I am glad that Ricky Dillard covered it a few years ago. He did a good job of it too. It just goes to show that good gospel music NEVER gets old. Artists who value good music honor those who created the pieces originally by covering them. I LOVE this song. I still sing it at my church. And yes, it still moves in a mighty way just like it did back in the day.
I sing this song at my church all the time....

@Kebbo202 You did!! They were together for Myrna's 60th birthday, and I thought that would be great too. Maybe next time. Thanks for the comment.
