i decided to show my teachers and parents, who thought i would go on to be a doctor, that they were wrong by doing what i wanted and going to nursing school. now that i just graduated, i find it amusing that so many of my classmates are excited to be making "real" money as a nurse. money isnt a major motivator for me, since my parents are reasonably wealthy and miserable. at some point my classmates will realize that money isnt everything, but then again, maybe not haha
What a tragedy to be working in a high paying job you are in just fro the money.. a job that strips you of the time and freedom to be involved in your community, with your mate, kids, pets, even the fancy home you bought but are never at. Just to PROVE yourself - to WHO? Sad. Insecure. Inauthentic. Truly a Failure. I'd rather be smiling and getting by with the basics. Gives me more time for art and riding my motorbike!
The last part of the video at 8:45 is just a natural human reaction regardless of society. I would bet that even in a non egalitarian society, perhaps even in areas of the Orient that practice budhism, there is some level of superiority phenominon and group pecking orders. This is a study of "Human beings" more than a study of America, even if some of this is more prevalent in America...In my opinion. Greed Jealousy and all these things were in the Bible 3000 years ago.
Buddhism offers some insights into this kind of thing. Buddhism suggests that we can actually be free of the judgement of others if we simply study our minds and our reactions to things. And if we selflessly, and Buddhism suggests, then people will tend to acknowledge and respect us even if we are not looking for it! Compassion is win-win.
@CathySander Yes, that's it. Just because it feels better to be compassionate. It's more fun. So, it happens spontaniously when we are calm and happy.
Meritocracy rewards financially just a little fraction of people in our society. Meritocracy is made over the principle that we have all the same abilities and opportunities and this is simply not true. The fact is just the contrary: we don't have the same abilities and we don't have the same opportunities. Meritocracy is the world to legitimate those (perhaps less than 10%) who have succeed financially. Just one of many, many examples : meritocracy apply for mentally ill ???
the world could be a better place if we were all given the same or at least very similar opportunities. Still some people would be more gifted in a way than others, but at least we could say "I try to do the best I can" without feeling that we have been given less chances.

Status Anxiety emerges today principally because of the unjust meritocratic society. Aristocratic society was not just, nor the meritocratic. The first rewarded financially almost the same families over the centuries. The meritocratic society rewards financially just a minor fraction of the population, those who have specific abilities and opportunities in life. The vast majority of people that don't have the abilities or the opportunities struggle with status anxiety.
I think you're right. However, a lot of people (maybe the majority) are capable of more than they think they are capable of. Maybe all they need is to look at things a bit differently, and mainly to respect themselves a bit more.

What a miserable way to live that we're all reduced to: worrying about status.

in Australia to achieve high status you need to boot a goal from beyond the 50 metre line.

@mercurius0 : It sounds as though compassion becomes automated, rather than forcefully done by the mind, as a consequence of meditation.

@shipcomesin : It's OK to at least try. It's not OK, however, for us to be blamed for when things go wrong.
