yeah, this is his birth dad who died when clark/superman was a baby.

The jor-el you see in the fortress is an artificial intelligence. It's basically a computerized, interactive journal. This was possible because superman's home planet, krypton, was far more technologically advanced than earth.

Clark's dad died in the fifth season, just after he won for senate and Martha didn't die she just left to serve in Jonathon's place.
