I saw Todd and the "Hello People" you can't help wishing were the "Goodbye People". They were at the Roxy in LA, and the crowd KNEW they were incredibly lame and let them know. Norman, the hello people kung-fu expert, got all froggy and was challenging the audience. They were yelling, "get off the stage!!" I KNOW it sounds cruel, but this how you have to treat mimes, or they'll think they're talented and then, they'll want to reproduce. Not on MY watch!! Ha-ha-ha!!
Thanks for posting, I've always wanted to see that again since I last saw it back in 1978. Those background singers were lousy. I wonder if they couldn't hear themselves or something.
Man, this is a godsend!!!!! I've had the bootleg of this Midnight Special for such a long time - and never ever saw the footage...until now. Hermit is one of my all-time favourite Todd albums - and this particular version of "Bread" is my all-time favourite one. Totally awesome! Thanks so much for that!
Some here criticize the guitar playing. Well, I used to do that trainspotting, too - when I was 16. Let the music do the talking - in its entirety. Don't pick individual elements...
this guy has to be Liv Tyler's true father. anyone can see that. it is in the way he moves, the tilt of his head, his facial construction. just look at him.
I agree 100%. I don't think they ever proved Steve Tyler was her dad with a paternity test. I think Bebe Buell just decided to let her think Steve was her dad after she turned 9 or 10. She looks exactly like Todd (more than Steve.)
Any videos of performances from "A Wizard , a True Star" or "Initiation"?. I have to agree on the mysterious quality of his singing- it conjures up more than it should.
Some people miss the point as to why Todd does something to the human spirit that many others can not. Its not the playing, the songs, the presentation, the guitar playing, or even the words.
Though Rundgren runs pure positive spiritual energy, expressed in the divine power of music.
He uplifts the human spirit to levels devils can only dream of taking it. His talent comes from the gods and is a blessing to the whole of mankind. Which is why you can't just like him, you have to LOVE him.
Good song from a great album--Hermit of Mink Hollow-my favourite two tracks were 'Hurting for You and Too far gone. Re the Hello People, some of their vocals were flat,I saw them with Todd back in '78 at the Bottom Line, New York City, as part of the Back to the Bars tour. And though they are chiefly mimers, they seem to add a bit of decoration to Todd's persona. Cant wait for his next concert in my home city of London.
I think the Hello People should probably stick to what mimes do best...silence! Wow, some off-key singing in the chorus! Still great to see this performance.
Yes, I like to call things as they are. He had some decent playing around 1974-75 but everything after is poor. TR himself admits he's not a good guitarist.
On eof the greatest tracks off one of the greatest albums of all time (Hermit) and you are commenting on the guitar playing? And haven't you heard of false modesty?
Hermit is a great album. I'm not too crazy about "Bread". I've heard of false modesty. Those pentatonic licks get a little tired after the fifth time.
Lets agree on Hermit and agree to differ on the guitar playing! Was looking for a more recent example of IMO great playing on YouTube and you might want to check out Unloved Children video on here.
WOW!! Nice screaming. Somehow his voice is the only one that doesn't sound dated. All the backgrounds are usually weak and or out of tune. His voice is consistantly brilliant. Even when he's goofing around.
Yes, definitely Back To The Bars era. Don't know where the video is from, but I was lucky enough to see this show many times when Todd played the Bottom Line in NYC for almost a week. A mixed band, and it kept changing all night. With all the aforementioned folks and Kasim and Moogy too!
1978 TV appearance, probably Midnight Special. From BTTB tour, probably speing/early summer. Todd, looks like Moogy, Seigler, Wilcox, plus Hello Peeps. Great to see vintage young TR (I thought he was old at the time) wail on guitar on this tune.
Thanks for this. Todd's messages are so unpretentiously righteous. This song and "Bag Lady" (both from "Hermit") are so humbling and motivating--particularly these days, with so many more hungry and homeless in the U.S. than back then.
Thanks much I was going to say this was Back to the Bars era, but this is a big stage- TV show? It is not the Utopia band of the era but gret to see the Mime and Musical group Hello People that Todd produced in early 70s (on ABC records) (Course this song is from Hermit of Mink Hollow- 1978 - Not a Utopia project per se but rather a Todd, record it all himself project) Wonderful posting keep em coming
mimes are like STINK BUGS...kill one, another appears...damn pests!
