A chain drive bike wouldn't have charged across North Africa the way the BMW did, Harley's of the Allies failed in sand because of this - but the germans ran outta gas and that's a problem for any bike - the boxer engine's better balance than V's in the rough stuff helped too-like a tightrope walker - the GS was developed in part to greet invading soviets in the 70s to 80s - I have one for the Chinese invasion in 6 years. Honda has a better reliability record than BMW. Even Triumph does. BMWs break transmissions (early to mid 90's), destroy drive shafts at 30k miles (every shafty they've made), and the newer ones like to eat the ring and pinion at the rear end.
