A small capacitor can block any high voltage DC from going through the amp. It should always be used. The value of the non polarized capacitor is not critical.
Add a small signal diode in series to the capacitor and you'll have a decent rf detector. Use a switch where it can short the diode for work in the audio stages. You can put this diode, switch and the cap into a discarded cigar tube and have a piece of stiff wire out the front.
