  • Wow. I can't imagine how much that thing costs!

  • i luuuv the bassoon!!!!!!!!!

  • i love contra bassoon

  • He's cute

  • Bassoon is my main instrument and i can play super mario bros. on it. along with pink panther and family .guy, and many others.

  • Was this by any chance recorded at Stetson University? That looks like one of the practice rooms on the third floor of Presser Hall....

  • @therealaustinblount yeah, it was, how did you know?? I just graduated from there in May

  • @richivinsky

I did their saxophone camp for 6 years or so, also the green lanyard gave it away XD

  • roflcopter ur so gayz lololol fagg!!1

  • How much does that beauty weigh?

  • I <3 bassoon

  • This should be the actual game music

  • lol when my friend graduates this year from highschool, ill be maybe take the bassoon part for band instead of bari for a couple of tunes.

  • Kiss you? O>o

  • Hey is this the colleges

  • playing contra should be the ultimate goal of bassoonists everywhere. this video just made my day.

  • @WolfEnchantress18 accept contra bassoon is two octaves lower then tuba..

Contra bassoon and octo-contra bass clarinet are the two lowest instruments..

  • @KHallesy Wrong. The tuba can play way lower than the contra-bassoon. There's no arguing that. Contra sounds ONE octave below the tuba. The tuba can play as low as the player is capable.

  • @ibanezdude9659

Just looked it up, the tuba can play one and a half notes lower than the contra-bassoon.. Although the contrabassoon usually plays music lower when written.. The octocontrabass Clarinet however is the lowest pitch instrument..

  • @KHallesy coming from a tuba player who had the contrabassoon part in an orchestra part... Contra Bassoon is about the same as tuba but tuba players can go lower while contra bassoons generally do not have music ever written as low. However, it takes more skill for a tuba player to hit lower notes then the cb... and well an octocontrabass clarinet... what do you expect lol it is octo- b4 even though the contrabass part. same way a contrabass sax is prob lower than tuba

  • Great work. Why is your face wet?

  • awesome

  • is it really difficult?

  • i always wished that i had the chance to play bassoon...

  • GO TUBA AND BASSOON PLAYERS!!!

  • freakin G.... bassoons are the awesomeness

  • ur bass clarinets upside down lol its wat it looks like

  • who thinks they can make the brown note?

  • I play bassoon and my mom sometimes rents contra bassoons to play ( she plays I. Orchestras and is a professional bassoonist) and those are just plain EPIC!!!

  • $4,000-$9,000 DOLLARS?! :O

I use my school's bassoon, but... So much for thinking of buying one... :X

  • @xXdarkclearXx That's still cheap, my instructor has a 23,000 fox bassoon. It's beautiful though!

  • @TheMagicalBikeCrew Oh man! I had no idea of the price range before I looked it up... I do love bassoons, though :}

  • Lol talented!!

  • i WANT a contra -- - - - - - anyone help me?

i don't mind how good it is cause i can buy a better one when im much older i just want one :D

so any help on where to get one cheaper than £10,000?

  • This instrument is just so amazing lol!

  • onlyforthesaxophone oviosly youve never heard a basoon. there are amazing! i also play basoon, and just so you know, for all those people who want to buy a basoon, they cost around $4000 to $9000.

  • i play horn, and ive got to say, id rather like to try it myself, pretty amazing instrument

  • Well fuck you. They're hard to play at first but they're awesome

  • says a player of the only intstrument where you only have to worry about intonnation and a few low nots?

  • haha nicee! XD thats soo kool

  • It was mesmerizing. It changed my whole outlook on life...................just kidding. it was really cool though. i play the bassoon also. :)

  • Hello Friend,

I want to buy one used contrabassoon.

Do you where I can find this one?

    thank you

  • Maybe have it be an octive higher? Or are just all contra bassoons like that?

  • no shit, sherlock

  • racist -__-

  • his rough voice compliments the rough music

  • is the key layout on the contra the same as the regular bassoon

  • it's somewhat the same, but there are tones that you close with your fingers, it's all keys. There are a few missing and a few extra keys. The fingerings above middle C (C4) are different than bassoon, and the middle Eb is different.

In general, the key layout is the same.

  • Hey how much does a contrabassoon cost?

  • I've seen a lot for like 25,000 dollars...although you most likely can find one cheaper. They are really expensive though, more than bassoons.

  • hey cmon...it's not that bad...

those of you complaining...if you can do it why don't you post a vid response?

  • GO BASSOONS! :D

  • bassoon pride!!! :D

  • its MAJORLY out of tune!! my contra has a tuning slide at the bottom of the pipe where the crook goes in, try adjusting it a bit next time!!

  • who gives a shit it still sounds cool you ass

  • I think you mean intonation; the tuning doesn't really matter if you play by yourself. Unless you have absolute pitch, that is.

  • Intonation always matters.

  • Dude, the pitch was all over the place in alot of those notes. But I do congratulate you. The tone seemed pretty good. I'm told that double reed instruments are difficult to get accurate pitches on.

  • Believe me, they are. I think it's from the hole (of the reed) being so small and your embechoure has to be pretty accurate.

  • lol, you r seems like Mr Parkman from Heroes =P.

Btw good instrument i like it.

  • i agree

  • contra makes me go nuts. i love listening to it, but tackling that thing and actually playing it is so hard. you play it WAY better than i do and i've been playing for nearly a month (or maybe a little more?).

kudos on mario :) i swear to god i play it on every instrument i touch...

  • I bet you could play the brown note on the contra.

  • Please don't bring that up. My pants are precious.

  • dude comeon

  • i love to play the tick tock crock thing from peter pan on contra, it's so fun and cute.

  • Oh~ Do you have notes for that by chance~?

  • Very Nice

  • Hey that was pretty cool

I play bassoon, and was wanting to know is contrabassoon harder to play than bassoon?

    Well great playing =]

  • I wouldn't necessarily say it's harder... it's just different. You get so used to playing bassoon that when you pick up the contra it's like your skill has gone back a couple years. I think I'm making the assumption that contra and bassoon are the same instrument, and they really are two instruments that share lots of characteristics. Most of the fingerings are similar, response is generally easier, but your intonation goes out the window, and holding the instrument is a little bit awkward.

  • @richivinsky hm, I've been playing bassoon for a while now, it has been my main instrument in band for 6 years now, but to be completly honest my intonation can be quite terrible at times, if the intonation goes out the window then I guess this wouldn't be the best instrument to play, I've always wanted to though. Oh well, great job, I really enjoyed the video.

  • I love the music, but you don't don't need to talk as much; I just skipped through it.

  • the sound of the contrabassoon makes me so angry.

  • why?it sounds cool

  • lol @ abbeythefluter

    i really love this sound.

  • GO bassoon.. I play that.. rock on dude>!

  • It's like a huge, melodious, earth-shattering, musical fart.

    I love it.

  • hey anyone know how much a bassoon or contra-bassoon costs? anyone i play is just rented, which is expensive enough!

  • the cheapest ones are roughly £700 so i'de start saving uo if i were you

  • it depends on the maker...Schreiber bassoons are 10 grand and contrabassoons are 100 grand

  • thanks. (looks at sadly deflated wallet)

well this should be fun ^.^

  • what are the fingerings for the oboe and contrabassoon. they're the same right? i think they are similar to the flute/sax, but i could be wrong.

  • oboe fingerings are pretty different from other instruments, and bassoon fingerings are different even from oboe fingerings. contrabassoon fingerings are similar to bassoon fingerings though

  • nice 1 post more^^

  • hahah you rock on the contrafagotto

  • funky sounding insturment thats for sure! Never even heard of a contrabassoon untill about 3 minutes ago (=

  • sexy guy !! nope !1 he's ugly !!

  • that sounded bad maybe it was the mic but it sounded very thin and weak

  • haha, well, it's a little tough to capture the pure essence of the contra on a 1cm microphone.

  • gotta disagree with you, mingus. i'm using some polk audio 2.1 cpu speakers and it sounded pretty great. indeed you're not getting the sound pressure levels like richivinsky said, but i certainly would not call this sound 'very thin and weak.'

let's here the bass line to the zelda dungeon theme, rich!

  • lmao at the end "bye" HAHAHA XD

  • Hey You Guys LOL

  • only 2 days? bravo, man

  • nice vid

  • 0_o

  • Sweet, we just got a contra so hopefully I'll be able to play it next year, looks fun.

  • Wow that was pretty awesome :D

Does the contrabassoon and bassoon have the same fingerings?

  • It does for the most part. It feels a bit different though. There are a couple notes here and there that have really different fingerings, but it's easy to pick up for a bassoonist. Biggest difference, no whisper key.

  • oh cool, i so wanna try that. i wish they had one at our school... is it hard to get the air through the horn, with the horn being so big?

  • It's surprisingly easy to play, at least I think so. It definitely takes a lot of air though. You're way more likely to get high on oxygen than wear out your chops. One of the pieces I had to play required a low B held out for a couple measures (at a pretty quick tempo). I could barely do it. I can't hold out notes on contra for more than a couple seconds at a time. Especially the lower notes. Forget circular breathing... requires too much air.

  • DX I don't even know what circular breathing is... but I still want to try a contrbassoon one day. Oh, when you say a low B, what note do you mean? How low can the instrument go? :D I wish I can play that that easily... I can barely play the low notes on my bassoon =/

  • The lowest note on that contrabassoon is the Bb above the lowest note on piano. You read it the same way as bassoon but it sounds an octave lower. Some contras can go down to an A, which is the lowest note on the piano. How long've you been playing? Isn't bassoon the best? =D

  • Woah, that's really low :D I've only played the bassoon for about six months, I picked up pretty fast though because it was my third instrument. It's pretty amazing:DDD but probably not as much as a contrabassoon. So how long have you been playing?

  • isnt circular breathing when u play while breathing ?? newton showede me somthin like that. oh and my favorite note is lox b flat i love the b flat scale 2 octive its the best but julia gabby and sasha like c scale bc theres no flate or sharps in the key signature

    julia is the "flicking queen"

  • are you serious i have to ask Brett Newton for clearification!! but is there still flicking?? i hate flicking but i gots to. Mrs.shwieg get mad when she hears cracked notes so flicking stops that. * cheat-i always use the "C" flickkey on a b c and d!!!

  • Yay for the contrabassoon! Any instrument that makes your face rattle from the vibrations is awesome.

  • Have you heard of Contraaloto clarinet and Contrabass clarinet?

  • Too much bass for my ears

  • XD

    nice

  • you rock man.

  • thank you for saying roflcopter.

  • Nice! Most people in my school don't even know they exist.

  • good job. i liked it!!

  • I think you should leave super mario bros. to higher octave instruments that because it really didn't sound too good on that contrabassoon. Especially since it's a double reed. But you made a good effort and I liked it nonetheless!

  • contra bass clarinet bass clarinet RULES!!

  • You dumbass. Thats not a clarinet. Thats a contrabassoon. Its an octave lower than the bassoon. WHICH IS NOT A CLARINET.

  • oh come on, give him a break... about 95% of everyone don't know what a bassoon is.

  • The contrabassoon sounds NOTHING like a bass clarinet... You need to hearn them in person and not on tape. Very distinct sounds. The contrabassoon is a much more reedy, tinny sound while the bass clarinet is much, MUCH smoother and more mellow...

  • contra bassoon is very nice and better that the contrbass sax

  • no it's not, contrabass sax is way cooler than contrabassoon..

  • that's a bold thing to say ;) j/k

  • 90% of the people reading this play bassoon

so we feel its our right to protect the dignity of the contrabassoon and its player

like its our fat cousin or something

dont pick on my fat cousin

  • amen brother amen

  • exactly. the contrabassoon is the fat cousin of the bassoon. you were exactly right

  • well, it wasn't the best, but i LOVE low low LOW bass instruments and super mario so you made a good effort

  • Honestly speaking, the contrabassoon is not really suitable for Super Mario Bro.

  • anything is suitable for Mario, dumb butt...

  • Righteous! I love the sound of the contrabassoon. Not bad at all, you were actually pretty good! :D

  • yeah contra does sound like a bass clarinet...but a little more bass-like and louder for sure

  • I hear no resemblence

  • That contrabayssoon sounds like a bayss clarinet

  • your dumb...

  • your....haha!

  • ...

  • what the contrabassoon and the bass clarinet sound nothing alike...

and he kept spelling bass with y...

  • Well done for your 2nd doy on the contra!! Try my bassoon videos. Andrew Bassey

  • Good God man you have to give him a lot of credit! He was able to that whole song very well by ear and he had only started playing 2 days prior to the video. Either respond nicely or don't respond at all. And next time read the video info.

  • try again richivinsky ..you can

  • I will, when I get to college in the fall, I'll have more access to the contra. That video was just day two of me playing it.

  • What kind of contra is that??

  • I'm not sure if it's a specific model, but I do know that it's a fox.

  • I think fox only makes 1 model of contra.

  • u need to put ur cool solo stuff on here to like the flight of the bumblebee and that one u did at camp

  • I'd like to see you find a contrabassoon player that can play flight of the bumblebee.

  • i meant on the normal bassoon

  • I actually tried, but it's reallly tough, since some of the fingerings are different. Also the partials in the upper octave are really different, so it's really hard getting the upper octaves to come out clean. I think if I had access to that thing for several months I'd be able to get a slow one bumblebee.

  • Great job richie d

  • lolz awesome... you were/are the best
