@EmeraldGreenXx yes, it's "the mistress of spices" by chitra banerjee divakaruni....i've finished just yesterday..it's beautiful...much more than the movie..but quite different...in fact, when she leaves the isle she inherited from the flames of shampati the body of an old woman, not of a gorgeous young lady...so, it appears much more amazing that raven - the correct name of her love - falls in love with her,,

@jellyhinatalovel It is called Mehndi. It is done with henna and applied with a plastic cone or brush. A lot of places do them. They usually last 3 weeks on a fair person, but on a naturally tan person like me or darker, they can last double that. On me they last two months! I do them all the time on my back as an alternative to tattoos. I think they are a lot more impressive. They look like a rash once they start fading, but if you scrub your skin as it is fading, you'll avoid that.

This movie has litte to do with the novel by Chitra divakaruni excep for some scenes...and Aishwarya (though i like her) was the last actress to choose for this role for the very simple fact that Tilo is a dark-skinned wrinkled old woman....

The name of the man she falls in love with is Raven and not Doug...

The novel is great , the movie is a disppointment if you've read the novel

@svariar that's what i was thinking!!! lol but i'm sure no tribe of spice mistresses would speak english either and i dont think their teacher would teach them the sacred arts of indian spices in english.

basically the language barriers are all messed up in this movie lol...

still, they could have used some malayalam here and there

@svariar if im not mistaken, they do learn hindi as well, dont they? my grandpa was from kerala and he speaks and write hindi.

@diehardist .....well no foreigner is going to know the difference so they just put in hindi .....it would been more believable if they just spoke English because Kerala has a highly literate population and a substantially high proportion of English speakers and English is probably the second most spoken language there rather than Hindi......they learn Hindi but would only be using it to communicate with people who can't speak English or the local language Malayalam.
