Agree with jefam3. This is the way it is supposed to sound--grand, stirring, and austere. Nothing extra or gratuitous, none of the fluff and flash of the John Williams arrangement. The original Arnaud theme is one reason I liked ABC's Olympic coverage so much back in the day.
Bugler's Dream is strictly an American composition, that ABC found on an album that Leo Arnaud recorded, and chose to use for their Olympics coverage.
It would not be until 1984 in Los Angeles, when John Williams rearranged Bugler's Dream, would the song become the official fanfare of the Olympics.
One more thing, this entire piece is John Williams arrangement of Bugler's Dream. Leo Arnaud's version of Bugler's Dream had no timpani, or no orchestra. It was strictly the fanfair.
You listening, NBC? This is the way the Olympic Theme SHOULD be played, another reason feel nostalgia pangs for the superior way that ABC used to cover the Games.
Last night when I was watching the awards ceremony for the ice skating competition I couldn't help but think that this song was being played instead of the canada national anthem.
This version is the one used by ABC Sports starting with the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France and used by ABC until their last Olympic telecast (Calgary 1988?). The NBC version is good, but I think this arrangement is better.
This is the only olympic theme i want to hear. It takes me back to when i was interested in the olympic games.

I'm pretty sure I heard this as far back as the 1960 Squaw Valley games.
