  • Actually I watched the video again and that looks like it may be a 3 phase motor, which would not be very happy running on single phase 220 without a VFD...when you hit 5hp or bigger you start to run into 3ph motors. I can't tell without seeing to tag, but that may be the case since it has three windings going to the cap.

  • I know you already bought and installed a new motor, but many towns have shops that rebuild motors for around $150 for a unit that size. Might have been a good option

  • I'm really enjoying the new production value, and practical how to's. I will be buying a generator soon, so I will be looking for that video on putting in a switch box.Keep up the good work.

  • id check the second capacitor and id follow the suggestion of the other commentor and take the belt of it, load wise just to check the bearings anywhere else aren't the issue, also I find it surprising the capacitor you replaced it with is allot smaller than the original capacitor as such, sometimes the capacitors today are under specified, but admiteadlly something isn't happy there.

  • well done cody, the best shot

  • I really like his videos, but the entrances and exits are extremely long. If he were to take a short little video editing class he would see the appropriate times lengths for a good entrance. Other than that very good videos.

  • you might want to try running the motor without the belts on (unloaded). your right about the capacitor, its bad if its leaking so your on the right track. Make sure you replace the cap with the same mfd rating or it won't start. sedraves is also correct, read his response. Double check the voltage and make sure the motor is wired correct for your building voltage. Most motors can be used on different voltage by changing how its wired, it should have a wiring diagram on the nameplate.

  • Good honest video! Thanks for posting.

  • Well at least it's not that dang Cat transmission : )

$20 for the capacitor was worth a shot, it seemed like the problem. I'm not so sure I would call this a fail. In the end I think you still came out on top.

  • Thanks Cody... kind of encouraging to see that not EVERYONE on youtube gets it right, first time, every time. Your stumble is an encouragement to many... look forward to the update vid.

  • I would not give up on that motor yet.

Does that motor have one or two capacitors? If it has two for a single phase motor it is knowm as Capacitor-run motor. In such a case you might have to replace both capacitors. If only one Capacitor it is known as a Capacitor start motor. Also have you checked the starting Relay? If the capacitor shorted it also may have damaged your Centrifugal Starting relay due to excessive current.

  • Did you make sure the motor was wire for 220 not 120.

  • Bought a compressor from harbor freight. Same problem, and as you can imagine harbor freight didn't stand behind that product.

  • I had an alternator in my vehicle that gave out and I took it in, to be re-built and they have a chip or fuse like device. I remember the mechanic said this is what they charge you for. A $20 dollar part instead of a $120 re-built alternator.

  • what is it that you do for a living in your shop?

  • @throwback336 He parts out Jeep Wranglers.

  • So did you sell the other property you were working on? You just kinda left us hangin there. Thanks

  • @bestbuddz1 He uploaded a video recently addressing that; check his channel.

  • did you check the auto head pressure release? if the pressure doesent release it would be hard start.

  • Nice try, good to hear your still in it for half.

  • Cody, thanks for posting this and showing us that you just need to keep pressing on. I for one need to replace a motor on something and in my upbringing did not have the change to learn so am doing as much as I can on my own now. With that said I would like to see the replacement motor video :) . +1

  • good honest video

  • Those Hi-lifts are a lifesaver

  • Good to see your packing.

  • Craigslist, man....buyer be ware. I feel for you.

  • couldn't get the motor rebuilt for a couple hundred?

  • Great tube dude.

Hey do you have your airtite wood stove going in the shop yet?

Keep looking on used sites might pick one up for free as I did.

    Thankk again,

    Have a great day

  • That looked like a Run capacitor you took off the motor, and the replacement looked like a Starting capacitor.

  • I would have done the same thing, the capitor was bad and you have to change it to find out if there is anything else going on. Many HVAC mec will change the motor and the cap at the same time and just charge the customer, keep the vid comming, also if you have an amprobe handy that can help you figure out some things,

  • Great video Cody, thanks for posting. I always enjoy learning something from your vids that's for sure!

  • I don't know about electric motors, but would it make sense to disconnect the compressor and test the motor without a load? If the compressor is binding, the motor won't turn it. Just a thought....great vid.

  • @danswim11 The compressor is rotating free you can see this as a spin the flywheel.

  • Another good one. This story, is the story of my life. I understand. Thank you for sharing. I learned something.

  • Baldor motors are the way to go. we got up up to 25hp all over my shop. replaced a lot of others but never the Baldor. Good choice

  • Just like buying a used car. You pay less than buying new but there are risks that you will be buying twice. But as you say Cody, with a bit of planning and common sense you can still come out on top in the end. I'll never buy new when I know that all the value is in the used market. I'm looking forwards to more of your interesting videos.

  • Glad you posted this...things do not always work out the way we expect them to, that's reality. Please do more, your videos are always interesting.

  • Thanks for sharing Cody. Why does it always seem like the best people in life, get the shaft? It sounds like that motor has dropped a leg and is trying to run on 120v. I am sure you have checked and rechecked all of your connections. I will bet the new motor will say made in Mexico! :-(

  • just for curiosity how old are you? I just reached 40, we already a little offgrid in europe and improving...probably after 35 one start to understand better where the world is heading...

  • @cba2004 where in europe can you live off the grid?

  • Comment removed

  • @cba2004 thanks!

  • @topophil np dude

  • what music at the beginning of the vid?

  • @sebenzalover Turin Brakes

  • Good video ! O so familiar ! I had the same problem on A A/C unit , keep up the good video , yea the guy probably new the motor was toast ,but passed it on to to trouble someone else ,you still got a good deal if the new motor works !

  • You know, I love when people don't only post their success stories!

Life is not perfect, for anyone! Things go up, things go down, but it's through these experiences we end up well prepared for whatever comes next!

Good luck on the motor, and I hope it works out for you!

    Thanks, Cody, appreciate it! :))

  • so you just lost 700dollars? x.x

  • @Valdris1987 no i saved $1200

  • You posted a video showing that you are not perfect? Are you allowed to do that?

  • not as easy to fix as a dozer transmission huh

  • Love the honesty. Often people post video's of all the successes but never the failures. No one is perfect even though youtube can sure make you out to be.

  • Cody - Love your vids . . . more importantly, I appreciate your honesty and work ethic. Good stuff was always! Good luck and be safe ;-)

  • Grease the bearings?

  • The ads on Youtube are getting ridiculous

  • @FreedomForYouAndMe - Agreed . . . they are making money off the hard work of YouTubers that get little or no return for the effort.

  • @FreedomForYouAndMe get AdBlock plus

  • i have 2 nice motors on my arbor unit ... i got the whole unit for $2500 one motor is for the saw one motor is for the wheels

  • If the motor says 23A it means FLA (Full Load Amps) The inrush current can go above that. As far as the capacitor goes there are motors called "capacitor start" and "capacitor run".

  • sometimes ya lose, great job, thanks for sharing

  • Hey man, that's real life unscripted. Perfect. Keep up the good work, Cody.

  • Thanks for posting this one even though it didn't go as planned. Love the channel.

  • That's what I would have tried to replace first too. Good luck in getting it fixed.

  • Sounds like the brushes are bad maybe.

  • I think replacing that capacitor was an important part of the initial troubleshooting phase. It happens.

  • You should plumb 1" PVC pipes to wherever you need air. I did it in my shop and almost doubled my tank capacity just in the pipe volume.

  • Their wranglerstar caught your video under pressure problem in 10 years repairing air compressors first of all is it a single phase or three phase unit you have the ability to measure a draw I would also urge you to remove the belt and check compressor portion to see if it is free and spins easily also the compressor has what they call and unload her sat steel tube coming out of the side of the pump that goes to the head is visible in your video

  • That motor has a locked rotor(well almost locked). To discharge a capacitor you just need to jump the terminals together.

  • thanks Cody, good to see the project from various points and to hear your thought process.

  • Like you said - nothing ventured, nothing gained! I appreciate you putting this video up. We all can learn from your explanation and the good comments here what to look for if we have a similar situation.

On a smaller scale, I just did a repair similar to this on our Bosch washing machine. Motor quit running. Shop said $200 for a new motor and brushes are not available for it. So we did some cross referencing and replaced the brushes for $30. Running great and saved a bunch in the process.

  • make sure its wired right. make sure you have good voltage there is something wrong along those lines.

  • do i hear you using a breaker to turn it on ? use a rated switch as a breaker is designed to protect from overload . its ability to do this will be reduced and it will trip more than necessary over time

  • @mrartwatcher actuating a breaker a few times is not going to hurt anything.

  • @wranglerstar assumptions only as i see you are a man of thought followed by action based on truth? is my guess right? I appreciate how you move on decisively and do not dwell on past issues. This one point is a valuable lesson . i was wondering how do you earn a living in isolation. is the workshop only for repairing?

  • don't touch the craft that comes out of those that is a canceris

  • @redneckrollercoast1 not anymore newer capacitors no longer use PCB

  • howman gallon tnk is that. in my shop we have a 50 gallon and an 80 gallon

  • @xxbryan715xx I think its 80

  • Hey Cody it is common for those motors to go like that when you only have single phase power. You made a good choice going with a Baldor electric motor they are one of the better you can buy. Put a new electric motor on it you should be good to go and have a compressor like you said last you a life time. Who knows that compressor may have been constantly cycling and the motor on it is worn out.

  • @Graveltrucking I want to know how many Hertz the old motor was rated for, Vs. the new motor. Dealt with that at a remote gold operation, The motors all growled like that, got a hertz stabilizer on the Gen Set, cleaned things up instantly. New digital Hertz Stabilizers dial in what you need for your motor demands. I dont see any mention of this in messages. Big motor like that demands big load, amps, breakers, and correct Hertz.

I wonder if this was the case here.

  • @gangesexcavating Most generators don't provide clean power the cycles are not always accurate at 60 cycles. With Codys electric motor it probably got hot one too many times because there wasn't enough power from the exciter to get the motor turning. With single phase power and big electric motors you need the exciter to get the extra boost to get the motor turning. I bet Codys motor has a burnt smell. A 5hp is max on 240 single phase

  • Cody, are you sure the compressor is turning in the right way ? this has nothing to do with this problem, but please check it. air compressors usually run anti-clockwise (at least the ones made in my country), there should be an arrow in the flywheel. also check if the air compressor isnt too hard to turn by hand. good luck !

  • Hey Codey.. Are you shure your compressor is bleeding off its head pressure. I made the mistake in the past to blame the motor to find out the air blead valve on the compessor head was not allowing the motor to spool up. Just a thought..

  • @OBXSOLWIND Good call on this check. Also, does the new cap have the same ratings as the old cap. Voltage and Capacitance will be written on the side of the can as mfd or uF. most good DVM's can measure the cap.

  • Leason is a good motor too. thank fot the vids. what was the shipping or was it local

  • I have been working with an electric motor that won't fire up off the generator. Im going to check the capacitor tomorrow, thanks for the tip.

  • The motor typically is a split phase induction motor. Basically, the capacitor shifts the AC waveform forward leading the field winding (split phase) to increase torque, and is only in play when on the start windings. Once up to speed, a centrifugal switch takes the start winding out of play, and swaps power to the run windings, which then comprises a single phase induction motor. You likely have shunted windings on this one due to the bad cap..

  • Hey Codie,

Is it possible that the motor sat for a while letting the rotor / stator rust sufficiently enough to act like sandpaper, thus wearing down the motor the brushes down to nothing after you started using it again? You might try changing the motor brushes (cheaper than buying a new motor).

And you could try a slightly smaller wheel on the motor for additional torque.

  • You still did a good deal there Cody and learned something now you can take the old motor have it checked for shorts and redipped for $100 and have a 5hp for next project. I like learning vids. I think I would have droped the belts before ordering the cap. and baldor is the best, they make some of them up the road from here. thanks Cody

  • Ah you got grainger by you, I have one here outside Chicago. Yes they are very expensive but they sell the best stuff.

  • @deepwater1974 its not close. I mail order parts from them.

  • You're still coming out ahead! Thanks for sharing and taking the time!

  • Thanks for sharing! It was good info for people to know. How many people understand the concept of the capacitor, really? Also, shows that Wranglerstar is a great resource for "how to" information while showing another side of doing things yourself. Doesn't always work the way you intended. Good job! More videos please.

  • Thanks for the vid. That's going to be a really nice compressor.

  • forgive me, but don't they have brushes that can be changed on that type of motor?

  • might as well change the oil in the compressor while your working on it.

  • 4:15 if you can try to make sure that the new capacitor has the same or a greater capacity (stated in farads). And their is a polarity to large capacitors so try not to hook it up backwards (bad).

  • @penguinistas Start capacitors are not polarized. As they are connected to AC, they can't be ;).

  • @dgr8zod I thought Cody said something about something leaking which made me think it was electrolytic. Thanks.

  • @penguinistas It is an electrolytic, but not polarized.. To create such a thing, you connect two normal electrolytics either negative to negative, or positive to positive, and put power to the free ends. Works either way, and you can hook up power either way, or apply AC without the excitement..

  • I thought I had a fix for my little porter cable pancake compressor when I took it apart and discovered one the brushes had disintegrated. Spent $20 on new brushes but it only ran for a little while. Worth the effort to try to save the material.
