Lien Hughes is seen at 2:36 saying,"Because you're my father." She's talking to Tom. In the 70's(before he even met Margo), Tom served in Vietnam and met nurse there. They had a brief romance. The nurse found out that Tom had gotten her pregnant but by then, Tom had gone. The nurse had a baby girl and named her Lien. When Lien was 17, her mother died so she came to America with 1 goal, to find her father and did and Tom welcomed her. Lien followed in his footsteps and became a lawyer.
I always shudder at these tributes to these long running shows. A mere 3 minutes for 50 years? Seriously?? An amazing show for most of it's run - the last decade was a bust, but they held it together up until then. The problem with these long running shows is that the people who put them on and understand how everything, and I mean everything fits together, eventually pass on and the show is turned over to new producers/head writers that don't get the CHEMISTY of that show. Think AW & GL.
Helen will be 91 in Sept. Frances Reid(Alice Horton) is about 3 or 4 years older. I haven't seen Days in a few years, so I'm not sure if she ever appears anymore.
Sadly, Frances' last ep was Christmas 2006 (it's on here somewhere) ...her condition after her stroke left her too frail to continue regularly in the role.
You may not know this but she also briefly appeared as Trudy Bauer on GL. She is without a doubt a Soap Icon. Here's something else you may not know. Don Hastings and British Actor William Roache have a bond in the sense that they have appeared on their own Soaps since 1960. Don as Bob Hughes and William as Ken Barlow.
Helen Wagner(Nancy Hughes ATWT) has been on the show since day 1 and longer than any of the others. She's now on reoccuring statis, but I think she's pretty close to retirement being that she's like 90 now. She's even older than Jeanne Cooper(Katherine Chancellor Y&R). You gotta admire Helen.
Helen is actually the same age that my grandfather would be if he were still alive today. In fact 2006(the year this from)was the year that he died.
OMG, I love how the audience gave her a standing ovation. She so deserves that. I'm so glad she's still on the show, even if it's only once in a few months.
Hey did you guys know that she played Trudy Bauer on Guiding Light in the 1950's before she became Nancy Hughes. Wouldn't it be great if a descendant of Trudy came on the show. Rick needs some new family big time.
jgraefe1 I totally agree. Kathryn Hays is an awesome actress and so down to earth. Her love and dedication for this show is just how we fans feel. I can't believe that As The World Turns is going off the air. It is a wonderful soap that has so much story left to tell. Shame on CBS & P&G for canceling this beloved soap! I will miss this drama so much. THANK YOU CAST & CREW for 54 wonderful years of the BEST DAYTIME DRAMA!!
Those were some classic moments showed, James Stenbeck's first time returning from death, Betsy Stewart's(Meg Ryan)wedding, Holden and Lily meeting for the first time(I'd say it was love at first sight), a teenaged girl named Lien(Ming-Na) comes all the way from Vietnam to find Tom Hughes, shows up on his doorstep and tells him she came to see him because he's her father, and Bob and Kim get married after being in love for so long.
Not to mention Barbara leaving Tom at the alter for James back in 1980, Marcy Thompson's (Marisa Tomei) 1984 Cinderella fantasy and Julianne Moore's (Frannie Hughes) meeting up with her look-a-like cousin and half-sister, Sabrina Fullerton in that English countryside church from 1987.

I love ATWT. I really love how Kathryn Hays (Kim) expresses how much ATWT means to her.
