  • This song is SO difficult to sing. She nails it.

  • FINALLY!!! Someone who sings it right!!!

  • this is truly marvelous. this woman has a tremendous voice

  • Her accuracy in the lower non-vibrato notes is questionable, and her tone slighty grating in places. However, excellent command of the coloratura and tangents of the whistle register here and in other pieces on youtube also.

  • BRAVO!

  • I like this performance better than the woman from the Sweeney Todd (the one with Johnny Depp) personally. Harolyn Blackwell's voice has lots of body and depth to it, like mine, which I appreciate :)

It's a shame she covers the tone of her high notes, though...

  • How is it humanly possible to hit those lat two notes!!!?

  • shes singing it completely wrong...its supposed to be much more light and pure

  • I do think the piece can be sung a little more sweetly than this, but you gotta have good support to sing this part eight times a week. Crooning worked well for the film, but I just don't think it's a realistic possibility for a live performance.

  • I am now inspired to practice this song way harder cuz this lady puts my lil performance to shame.

  • Her voice is a little strong for this part. It's not gentle enough to convey the meaning of being trapped fighting desperation.

  • @gothicphey I agree but come away from the weakling in the movie. She is portraying trapped but strong thats why see asked the trapped how they cope all through the song cuz she cant. I get what your sayin tho.

  • @gothicphey Yeah, but she isn't plaing the role. She's singing the song, so she has more freedom with the rendition of this song.

  • @TheLilyx13 I guess you're right.

  • One of THE BEST renditions of this song I have EVER heard! Those last 2 notes brought tears to my eyes

  • I saw this when it first aired almost 20 years ago in 1992 or 1993. I NEVER forgot this woman or this performance. Such control.

  • Facial expressions were a bit strange to me , and her voice is too shaky for this song, but overall amazing performance!

  • a little too fast, but it was still amazing!!!!

  • ive never heard anyone do that with the ending absolutely spectacular!

  • She has a amazing voice! WOW! :)

  • only the best to showcase Sondheims work...awesome..

  • Beautiful voice!!

  • those who said she sang this song too loud not only dont know she has an operatic background, she has no mic, and its open to the interpretation of the musician. are you a musician? no need to answer lol. LOVE YOU BLACKWELL! SANG IT GIRL!

  • Whaaa...WOW! Gorgeous voice!

  • I wonder if she finds it hard to hit the high notes. She is so amazing!

  • wonderful! especially that ending...loved it : D

  • ugggghhhhh!!! that was awful! she is going soooooo fasssst!!

  • @hollyannharris yes i argee and so loud

  • @tantewumeru She's a soprano. 'Nuff said

  • so strong x. x

  • What a superb voice - when is Harolyn coming to the UK? April 2011 - especially the top A at the end!

  • What a superb voice - when is Harolyn coming to the UK? April 2011

  • THATNOTE :O

  • beautiful! I like how she took the ending up an octave, it sounded gorgeous

  • stunning.

  • Oh my God.

  • i always imagined this song to be more gentle, her voice absolutely amazing though ^^

  • Her upper range is beautiful... wow.

  • her pronunciation is kinda distracting and weird. shes also not the best singer I've ever heard.

  • @gonebaad24 this is true. however, that is a REALLY hard song, and she did it better than probably 90% of the women on this planet could. and she finished sooo beautifully.

  • @EbunnyEthereal Yeah thats true. you have to have some amount of skill to attempt something like this.

  • fuc autoning, thumps of for REAL singing!

  • @inuyasha6457 because operas are totally autotuned. listen, she's no fergie at the superbowl half time show. she's beautiful, and talented, therefore I'm apologizing to everyone who was graced with your ignorant comment for you. I bid you adieu.

  • I hate this whole banter about how she's not singing it right. When a song is out of the context of a show and is being performed in a concert setting, it doesn't matter whether she's not singing it 'innocently enough' or whatever. She's not actually playing the part, just singing the song. Geez.

  • Impeccable.

  • DAMN.

  • outstanding!

  • Johanna is not on the brink of madness when she sings Greenfinch. I'd argue that she starts off as a stereotypical Victorian maiden, one with little freedom; I don't think at this point she even understands the judge's real feelings towards her which makes his 'Johanna' & her subsequent actions more shocking. This singer captures well J's yearning & wistfulness; the Broadway J, in contrast, starts deranged then has no-where to go. Her Greenfinch is shrill, off-key, and simply awful.

  • Nice, but a little fast imo....

  • WOW! THE ENDING! She KILLED IT! YES YES YES! Go GURRRL!

  • I think she sounds wonderful. Probably the best voice singing this I have heard.

  • Perfect.

  • oh my god. that was so beautiful.

  • how can you say the johanna from the movie was a joke?

She kicked the hell out of the one from the broadway version.

and this woman is not trying to be in the role. simply singing the song.

You both need to take a look at things.

  • Nice!

  • The adolescents who usually torture this song make my ears bleed. Not this. No, not this.

  • it's supposed to be sung sweetly though.

  • @ESENDETproductions it is. It's beautiful and sweet yet strong

  • the 'joke' of Johanna was a lot more convincing of her role of being a trapped adolescent than this powerful diva

  • @janicegingerich I agree... it tends to be that way in musicals, I have the same feeling with PotO... Just like Jane Wisener, Emmy Rossum is a great actress and she has potential but her voice lacks the training and technique the musical-Christine have...I guess it depends on what aspect you prefer personally: The acting or the singing :)

  • @janicegingerich Very true, but. . . . :D

  • 2:40!!! COME ON!!!! that was amahhhzing!!!

  • well she is an amazing singer, but i definitely prefer the original johanna...i dont know i just think the softer aspect is better for the character...and as for movie johanna, while i agree she certainly wasnt good enough, she did have a certain innocence to her voice that worked for the role, but lets be honest tim destroyed the story, he took out almost all the songs, took out all the comedy i mean its a mess compared to the play plus johnny and helena werent good as far as the singing goes

  • Better than the movie, and she controls her vibrato a lot better than the original

  • she sings this better than anyone else!

  • holy shit this song is awesome

i really want to modify it so it's one chorus and i can play it as a jazz standard

also children will listen. I mean shit, sondheims shit begs to be improvised over

  • Oh my GOD, that last note is just divine!

  • oh wow, what a voice. <3 beautiful!

  • WOW.

  • that last note is unbelievable, I'm such a jealous alto right now!

  • Perfect! Just perfect!

  • i like johanna beter :P

  • Amazing!

  • there are 6 people in this world that are obviously tone def. that was simply ravishing

  • voice from heaven

  • wow!!

  • wow !!! What a beautiful voice

  • she is great!

this is wonderful in a concert, however in the actual musical, I prefer a more delicate Johanna.

That still doesn't take away the amazingness from her though, this was fabulous! :)

  • @Mystikchick I couldn't agree more! In terms of a singular performance this is incredible. Yet in the context of the stage musical/movie you need someone with a more innocent voice.

  • Gorgeous voice, one of the best renditions of the song I've heard. Sweeney is practically an English opera, and in my opinion it's most appropriate to perform it with voices as marvelous and rich as Blackwell's. While the film with Depp was entertaining, and opened the eyes of many new fans to the genius of Sondheim, it's saddening to me that those who discovered Sweeney through the film often prefer the film's singers to masterful voices like this. Anyway, gorgeous piece - when it's done right.

  • amazing. i want to sing like her. all the best to her

  • OMG at the end

  • Wow!!!! I can't think of anything else to say...

  • Sublime!

  • I personally really like Ms. Blackwell's rendition of Green Finch. She is singing it as a concert piece, not as a piece part of a musical. I agree with other posters; the ending was absolutely amazing.

She maintains the fullness of her voice, even at the softest dynamics. Wish I wer lucky enough to take a lesson with her.

  • Harolyn was my voice teacher a few weeks ago. Absolutely the most amazing experience of my life

  • to manly eww

  • thats my cousin :DDDDDDDDD

  • that's an amazing voice! but i liked the Johanna in the movie better...her voice sounds more like a bird, way lighter

  • I Worked With Harolyn This Past Week, And She Really Is Just As Amazing As She Seems.

  • I love it and I think she is wonderful!! I do wish she was a little bit ligher but she was still fantastic!! I think it is amazing how she can be so light and then get so powerful! Amazing range BRAVA!!!!

  • Absoutely Stunning!!!!!!!

  • well yeah its cuz shes black ;) black girls go it!

  • Beautiful voice, better than I could ever do for sure. I do feel that she sings this a little too harshly for my liking, but just a matter of opinion I guess XD

Though that last note was beautiful <3

  • That last night was lighter than air

  • she's amazing!

  • @angelbella123 You just can't accept that she isn't the right person to sing this song. and i know i couldn't sing it better, thats why i haven't. you on the other hand couldn't sing it any better either. but i do know at least five other people who could sing this better then Harolyn Blackwell... i saw your videos, you need a lot more practice before you could even enter the same room as this woman, and i don't even think she can sing that good, thats sayin something. get to practicing.

  • ummm....that was incredible

  • All you haters...STOP

  • Beautiful voice...

  • That last note was friggan incredible!

  • @watchingmovies247 lighter than air.

  • A lot of people have commented about the way she ends this piece. I was FINALLY able to look at a copy of the score and the notes that she sings, at least in the score I saw, are the original ending notes.

  • umm well the end... well it... made the whole song suck!!!!!!! NEVER do that again! i hate it. its a good voice but sing another song.... that is if you dare make a total wreck out of it!!

  • @YoDog027 that is how the original score is. it was beautiful.

  • @YoDog027 you do understand that that is the original score, right. and this is probably the best version of this song, i think that the johanna in the movie has no depth in her voice, no feeling. in this, it was radiating.

  • nice voice but ..its off a bit and harsh

  • @josiexx4y78 are you crazy.

  • very good. But its supposed you be piano (soft) on a lot of the parts she didnt do alot of the dynamics..and the trills were pretty bad..

She sings very harshly, But very pretty voice.

  • This isn't too good, she drops it a few times and it wasn't impressive.

  • Comment removed

  • she seems to rush and be too forceful and her mouth opens waaaaay too wide, it's kind of annoying

  • This is a gorgeous rendition of the song. Not intended to be part of the show in this case. I'm sure it would be changed if it was - Johanna being less confident. Wow, what a voice.

  • I have to say this is a good version of the song but it does depend on you reading of the character, one thing is for sure she is a hell of a lot better than the johanna from the original touring cast.

  • its too powergul and like, strong to be johanna in the movie. jayne wisener's voice suited the part of johanna in the movie perfectly.

  • omg, wow.

  • The johanna in the movie was great. and so is this one, but I think jayne Weisner captured the innocence of the part in the movie.

  • Actually I think that everyone is allowed to sing in the way he understands the song. Each one has his own point of view

  • She does have a lovely voice, but I do think it should have crescendoed a bit at "Whence comes this melody...", and then back to a softer pitch.

  • She has a beautiful, but I think this song is meant to be soft and touching this is slightly too powerful..

  • MrToadRocks: Meant to be soft?

In the context of the show, Green Finch expresses the terrified, last-chance, teetering-on-the-brink-of-madness feelings of a teenage girl being kept in a luxurious prison for the use of a revolting pedophile who acquired her like a gruesome trophy after raping her mother and having her father falsely imprisoned for life.

And if that sounds over the top, well... it's opera.

    But soft? Nuh uh.

  • @icaruspnw Nah Johannas meant to be like the damsel in distress who is timid and shy, so the song is meant to be fluttery and pretty yet still have a sad meaning.

Yet yeah I can see your point of view, I guess it's just different ways to view it.

  • agreed! she is concerned wondering what a jailed bird might be feeling inside of the cage, thinking about how could be possible to sing in that condition... So it's not supposed to be soft as MrToadRocks says... ^^

  • @icaruspnw she wasn't terrified that's a little eccentric

  • I agree, she has an amazing voice, but I like the song better when it's sung softer :)

She has amazing control over her voice, though, the last notes were unbelievable!

  • I really love how she sings it :] But i also like the way the girl in the movie sings it as wel :\

  • HER CONTROL AT THE END, gahhhhhhhhhd. so amaazing.

  • That's exactly what I thought @rnjt07! hehehe

  • She is amazing! nothing else to say

  • marry me. freaking amazing!

  • That was beautiful

  • Wow, what an amazing voice :D

  • WOW,

  • Oh wow, what a voice! And what a name, I love it! :D

  • Phenomenal talent; one that demands your attention from the second she begins to the last note. Possibly the best rendition of this song I've ever heard.

  • THANK YOU! who the heck WAS that in the movie anyway?? THIS is how that song should be sung. PS I am a coloratura soprano professionally.

  • i like them both. ms. blackwell has a phenomenally strong voice, but the johanna in the movie was only supposed to be 15 or 16. her voice was believable for a 15 or 16-year old girl, i think.

  • When I was 15 i did this song for district music contest and I won.. It's verry possible to have a mature voice even at the age of ten...

  • @MarianTheLibrarian i kind of liked that johanna. but i agree, this one is much better.

  • @MarianTheLibrarian Johanna has a great voice! Yeah, this woman has an amazing voice, but that does not mean you have to rag on the actress who plays Johanna.

  • @plpanther Yeah, person who played Johanna in the movie did have a lovely voice.

But you have to admit...This is incredibly better.

  • @plpanther Agree...although this version is way better, I think the movie-Johanna was perfect for the role, innocent and sweet...this singer sounds very mature and trained...maybe too mature for the role...but her voice is just WOW :D

  • @MarianTheLibrarian i dont think so...i mean, they have totally different styles. as a simple, stand-alone vocal piece, harolyn does a great job -- her voice is technically flawless. but i think the film johanna's troubled, feminine little voice fit the character better. it was subdued and innocent and...closed. she seemed small and insecure, as she would if she had been locked in a tower her whole life. the effect was overall more disturbing, in my opinion.

  • @MarianTheLibrarian It's because they made it into a more higher pitch then it was. I've heard that "joke of a Johanna" sing it lower, and she sounded wonderful.

  • @MyArtIsLoved731 not to say she wasn't wonderful, but if you're a great singer, it shouldn't matter what key it is in -they are singing the exact same song, nd this one just happens to be better in MarianTheLibrarian (and my) opinion. don't blame it on the key difference.

  • @ur1radycalchic I know, the movie version wasn't amazing, but i'm pretty sure she didn't do her best. The key difference really changed a lot, although i prefer Harolyn Blackwell better. Plus, have you ever heard the Korean Johanna Esther Ryu sing it? Beautiful as well~

  • @MarianTheLibrarian rly? i liked the johannah in the movie, i thought she was good and fit for the part :3

  • @MarianTheLibrarian oh come on.. Johanna was wonderful too : P ; ]

  • @MarianTheLibrarian Its supposed to be More of a Cute innocent kinda thing with johanna not Pop diva Get over it, your the joke. I prefer Johanna.

  • @iechigomew There is actually nothing "cute" about this song. Johanna is about to go crazy. She has been locked away by a lecherous man who subtly threatens her with rape on a daily basis. Have you ever even seen the broadway production? If not, it's on youtube. I suggest you watch it before calling this song a "cute innocent kinda thing".

  • OMG AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh my God, what a beautiful voice!!

  • great!!

  • beautiful voice and nice arrangement at the end!!

  • Ms. Blackwell is a graduate of my alma mater, the Catholic University of America. We sang with her several years ago at the Kennedy Center. Awesome voice, and a wonderful person!

  • that ending was wonderful!
