@videozfann I grew up on this show on Saturday mornings. My dad always wanted me too wake him up an hour before the show starts so we could watch it together. An interesting little tidbit, the actor who did the voice of Tarzan went on too do the voice of General Ross in the 80s Incredible Hulk cartoon series.
Ah... Nostalgia. What a dear friend you are. I remember watching this cartoon on Sat. mornings and then waiting for 11:00 A.M. to flip over to NBC for the MLB Game Of The Week... I grew up watching Pete Rose and the Big Red Machine battling my beloved Steve Garvey and the Los Angeles Dodgers. GOOD TIMES.
The Tarzan yell was not the original one done by Johnny Weissmuller. Also, I can tell this was a Filmation production by the executive producers' names turning in a slow counterclockwise motion. I'm assuming Hal Sutherland directed every episode of this series, just like every other Filmation production.
@Wolfington Yes, she did tell him. The Mangani, the apes who raised him, were sapient and had their own language. Naturally, he learned it while growing up.
Wow! Great post. I loved this show as a kid.I have fond memories of watching this with Dad..as he told me the Tarzan legends he knew. Thanks for making me feel 11 again.
oneof my Saturday favorites, this Tarzan beats the deformed, knee walking thing disney put out. I would love to see these great shows repeated, there was also a very good Flash Gordon on Saturdays at the same time.
I think this was one of the few cartoons to actually try to stay with the source material.
However he seems to have had contact with the outside world (maybe spent time in the UK?) as he speaks english, has knowledge of anatomy and basic medical skills.
(I remember the alien episode where he does cpr)
Still a great show. Filmation never did anything as good as this. Except for the attempt at making a serious update to flash gordon.
@leftcoast67 In the books, he did indeed spent time in the UK. He spent enough time among civilized folk to learn from them, decide after a fair trial that he didn't like them much, and go back to the jungles of Africa. Amusingly, he learned from his parents' books how to read and write English, but the first human language he learned to speak was French.
@LadyDeirdre I loved the books, specially "Tarzan of the Apes", and "The return of Tarzan" ( the second one, if I'm not confusing the title). I read until the one that his son Jack went to Africa.
Today those books would be considered racist, and accused of advocating eugenics! But they started being published in 1909, I guess you have to overlook that and just have fun...!
Tarzan, Valley of the Dinosaurs, and Superfriends were my 3 favorites as a kid in the early to mid 70s. Great stuff. In those days, if you overslept on Saturday and missed your show, you were SOL for a week. Kids today with their 24 / 7 cartoons have it made.
I never thought I'd see these again. I vividly remember the stock footage that got used over and over again on Tarzan, but I didn't care. Thanks for posting.
When We first moved to Canada Montreal, I remember watching repeats of this back in 1978 and did I love them and really enjoy them, I appreciate that they have these episodes on youtube I can watch the ones I never got to see, thank you for putting them up and thanks also to youtube have a great day.....Thanks Aidan.
@dennisrayso You have to understand that Edgar Rice Burroughs, who wrote the original Tarzan novels never travelled to Africa in his life, so he knew NOTHING about Africa.
i remember this show being on when I was in kindergarten, I think but it was soon taken off. I don't remember anything that happened on it, just that Tarzan was running around in his loincloth with Jane at his side.
La jungle, c'est ici que suis nee et c'est ici que mes parent sont mort alors que j'etais qu'un enfant. Je serai mort tres vite moi aussi si je n'avait pas ete receuillis par une femelle singe nomme kala.....

Lou Scheimer & Norm Prescott are animation giants. They used Frank Zane Mr. Olympia's(77-78-79) Physique for this "Tarzan Lord of The Jungle". Coincidence? Google Frank Zane.
God I loved this series. Wouldn`t it be cool to have a t.v. channel dedicated to series like this and from this era. Are there any producers out there willing to take on this mommoth task. I feel so old but what happy days they were. We belonged to a sspecial era. xxx

He found his parents cabin and over years somehow managed to teach himself to read the books there. But he couldn't speak. Then when D'Arnot came, he taught Tarzan how to speak. Tarzan then spent time in England, France and the U.S before going back to Africa to live on a plantation in Kenya.
One of the best action animated shows by Filmation. Tarzan: Lord of the Jungle was excellently done. It was non violent and taught moral lessons. I fondly recall this series running solo and with other shows, whether it be with the New Adventures of Batman (my top fave), the Super 7 cartoons and Jason of Star Command, or the Lone Ranger and Zorro cartoons. Cheers goes to the late Bob Ridgely who was the voice of Tarzan. Why isn't this show on DVD? All the other shows are. Bring Tarzan to DVD!!!
I have recently received a six-disc DVD set of 36 Tarzan Lord of The Jungle episodes from the U.S. I found them on iOffer. $20 including delivery to the UK.
Good quality & great value.

This was without doubt the Greatest Cartoon from my childhood. Here in England it was shown in the late 70's as part of Noel Edmunds 'Multi-Coloured Swap-Shop' on Saturday mornings. My pal Tim & I used the Tarzan call when we went round to each other's houses. We even spoke to animals using Tarzan's language. "Ungawa !" I got goosebumps when I watched this iconic intro again. First time I'd seen it for about 30 years. Thanks for posting it on YouTube. A real nostalgic buzz. Ace !
Interesting ! Around the time of this shows original airing. 76-78, Frank Zane's physique was talk at the time. Zane's lean muscularity, symmetry and proportion, balance, What am I talking about? Just YouTube Frank Zane, and see. Zane was Mr. Olympia 77-78-79. Even Frank Zane's facial feature's right down to the hair . Zane had a stoic look to him that is very easily seen in this " Tarzan Lord of the Jungle" . Coincidence ?
one of the best cartoons whats bring me back to my great childhood back in Yugoslavia..because of Tarzan and Smurfs i was late to school..we had Tarzan first every sunday at 7pm and after sometimes during the week..its the best classic cartoon..wish to have on DVD but unchanged, originall version...remember we all was playing Tarzan as kids..A AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
I am He Man, King of the women people, they are my sex slaves by day, whores by night, I take no prisoners but make them love me & my goodwill towards them, if ever you see me in the jungle alone, be sure to approach me naked, for I am He Man !
Saturday mornings in the 70's me, my 2 brothers and my sister would take turns watching cartoons(more like arguing) cuz we only had 1 TV in the house(imagine that!), but we would all agree on this one. And since my little brother was the youngest HE was our remote control. Good, good days.
i loved the cartoon as a child too.i looked everywhere i could think to look online for tarzan lord of the jungle dvd's.i was going to let you where to look if i found any.you're right .they don't seem to exist.
This was the real Tarzan cartoon, not that goofy, looney, irksome version of the 90's. That Tarzan always appeared to be a little to metro-sexual for me. This old school Tarzan had real jungle cred!
The animation was ahead of its time. It's still superior to any I've seen today. Makes me glad that I grew up watching shows like this and Flash Gordon. It was said that Bob Ridgely's facial expressions were used in animation in both shows.
How wonderful to see this again. I have missed this cartoon on Saturday Mornings. I feel so sorry for children now, there isn't ever anything worth watching on Saturday mornings, that I would have liked. And actually I think the quality of this cartoon is much , much better than what you find today. The material was written with character. There was nothing like a glass of chocolate milk and sitting down to Tarzan and then The Land of the Lost.
The voice of Tarzan was portrayed by the late actor Bob Ridgely, who also was the voice of Thundarr, the Barbarian (1979-81). He also made guest appearances on two other Filmation produced shows, Uncle Croc's Block (1975-76) as the $6.95 Man and on an episode of Ark II (1976-79) as Don Quixote. I hope this answered your question. :)
Yes. His name was Bob (or Robert) Ridgeley. He was also the voice of Flash Gordon. He also appeared in the movie Robin Hood Men In Tights. He unfortunately died in 1997.

Okay yeah, I agree a lot of cartoons suck nowadays, but COME ON PEOPLE! There's better animation in Tom & Jerry. Ugh, not every cartoon made over 30 years ago is solid gold.
No, but I know good old cartoons when I see them. Trust me, I've seen my share of blasts from the past. And sorry to rain on your parade (and I understand how you feel about seeing old cartoons from your childhood) but seriously, let's be reasonable...
Better animation in Tom and jerry, Tom and Jerry in a diffrent league to stuff of this era. It's incredibly well animated and drawn, a strange comparison indeed. Still these were done cheaper and lasted 25mins
because it's narritive is better, proper story telling rather than comic asides, pop culure references, or tiring wackiness; which you get on the TV cartoons of today.
Might I suggest NOT watching those saturday-morning kiddie cartoons and actually widening your horizons to examine cartoons with actual depth, like Avatar: the Last Airbender, South Park, and Boondocks.
ZOMG !! the difference between this and the disney version is the same as the one between 60s Spiderman and the movies: the animation is EXXXTREMELY SLOW !! omg ! look how he jumps ! how he swings with the lianas ...
Cheers videozfann, didn't know that. Great voice ;)

The animation was ahead of its time. It's still superior to any I've seen today. Makes me glad that I grew up watching shows like this and Flash Gordon. It was said that Bob Ridgely's facial expressions were used in animation in both shows.

CBS late Saturday morning, right?
SidJustice1 3 years ago
Yes around noon or so like the end of the great cartoon lineup that ran to like 1:00 or 1:30 on CBS along with Zorro and Lone Ranger.

I love this series! One of Filmation's best Animated Action shows of the 1970's!

Actually this cartoon was made in 1974, I remember watching it before going to Sunday School in Boston.

Does anyone know who was the voice of Tarzan?
MultiColoredPearls 3 years ago 5

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Okay yeah, I agree a lot of cartoons suck nowadays, but COME ON PEOPLE!

No, I'm a person with an opinion, just like you. Just because I don't like Tarzan doesn't mean I'm immature.

Better animation in Tom and jerry, Tom and Jerry in a diffrent league to stuff of this era. It's incredibly well animated and drawn, a strange comparison indeed. Still these were done cheaper and lasted 25mins
jackjude 3 years ago
My point exactly. So why should someone say that this is better than a more modern cartoon?
DanniDotNet 3 years ago
because it's narritive is better, proper story telling rather than comic asides, pop culure references, or tiring wackiness; which you get on the TV cartoons of today.
jackjude 3 years ago 3
Might I suggest NOT watching those saturday-morning kiddie cartoons and actually widening your horizons to examine cartoons with actual depth, like Avatar: the Last Airbender, South Park, and Boondocks.
DanniDotNet 3 years ago
Only Boondocks would make the list. The rest would've been left on the cutting room floor 30 years ago...

ZOMG !! the difference between this and the disney version is the same as the one between 60s Spiderman and the movies: the animation is EXXXTREMELY SLOW !! omg ! look how he jumps ! how he swings with the lianas ...

Blimey.... the years melt away when I watch this.
Haven't seen it this side of 1980, but I remembered most of the monologue.
