I have to study this for a level music, and i really do not see why people like it. Yes he's a brilliant player, but it's fucking horrible to listen to
Bird had a mischievous smile that was part of his hipness, like he knew something we didn't know. And hit he did. But when he was drunk he looked disheveled and unattractive. But who cares. If I were with a sloppy drunk and high Marilyn Monroe, even though she didn't look great she was still the bomb. But Bird's hygiene wasn't great. He wasn't a tidy cat. He'd dress with his shirt sloppily fit into his fat slacks and his necktie poorly tied and adorned. He ate like an impolite rube.

bird is pure sickness. pure sickness. man, i didnt even know he could play that fast. but the song is not as good as it could be because there wasnt enough flavor from the bass, drums and piano. (i didnt even hear the piano). no disrespect to the musicians though. i just think it should have like a "play anytime" type beat. (not for the sax) if u listen to moose the mooche, yardbird suite, or ornithology u might know what i mean
@wdmounger lol don't worry. there's hope for us metalheads, i describe myself as a metal guitarist that wants to play everything and my guitar instructor is always making me play charlie parker standards.
I didn't know if any of you knew this, or you were too busy talking about Bird's looks, but he was extremely addicted to heroin, and drank a lot. Both of the drugs that he was abusing are depressants, making you slower. If Bird was going this fast while being slowed down, he must be pretty fucking fast if he wasn't doing that shit.
all you guys are gay!!! lmao if you have to point out he's good looking instead of commenting on his music than you should consider rethinking your sexual preference
When 1 guy calls another guy good looking, its a good idea to point out that your not gay. There are guys who are good looking, (e.g. Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Orlando Bloom,) Not in a sexually attractive way, but they just look nice.
But what does it matter if you are gay or not? It seems like you are really paranoid of others thinking you are gay if you always have to point out that you are not.
"I'm not gay or anything, but i like europian movies.
This is one of my favorite versions of KoKo. I also have a version by Bird played live in another concert setting. I dubbed it on tape (remember music tapes? lol) from my band teacher back in the early 90s so I have no idea of the album, musicians, etc., but it, too is killing. The trumpeter actually solos (he and Bird go back and forth at the beginning before Bird destroys everyone. The trumpeter solos after Bird). Someone holla if you know what I'm talking about.
he got a job washing dishes at a club where Art Tatum played and was inspired by his playing. He was also inspired by Dizzy and Tommy Dorsey. Dizzy was almost playing bebop but he didn't have the complex harmonic structure that Charlie pioneered
Well, I think that he really shines on Koko because of the 'ole rumour about him learning Cherokee in all 12 keys, and being that Koko is a contrafact of Cherokee....you get the point.
@mahoose6 : i guess he learned to play like that when he practiced 11 to 15 hours a day :D by the way this only reflects how fast he could play....almost nothing else!
@playbeautiful9 there's an interview of charlie parker by paul desmond. it is totally obvious, to anyone who isn't an biased or stupid, that desmond, like all the jazz artists of that era, saw bird as a living legend. desmond isn't even in the same universe with bird
@Diomedes22 though i agree with you that he is doing more than fast playing, i still feel that its just too technique focused. sure his playing is a great example of perfect time and alignment, it is lacking in one of the reasons that makes saxes so awesome, the emotion that be projected from them
you are confused. this performance is as overflowing with what you term emotion as could be imagined. lacking is a word that can not be reasonably applied to this performance in any respect.
@demandango i think im probably with gjbsaxman94. im not saying this piece sucks. its certainly not my kind of thing, just playing fast, but i dont get much sense of "emotion" as it were in this. thats just my opinion anyway.
@JohnWC134 thats what bebop was all about, musicians were tired of practically playing orchestrated music in the "swing era" of jazz, they barely had a chance to improvise, therefore the later age of angry musicians after world war 2 expressed their anger to the world like this, it was like shouting that this aint no dance music, this aint music for everyone, but they showed all of their talent this way
@gjbsaxman94 the speed forces you to focus more. it makes you engage with the music such that if you can train yourself to follow along you get much more enjoyment. this is key to all the most intense bebop. its not for everyone, though, just like Moby Dick isn't for everyone.

There are birds like Desmond, that sing so sweet and lovely...
And there are Birds like Parker, that sing, and flatter and fly,
and go high over the sky.
Hey, guys...If you cannt sing with him (somewhere over the rainbow)
then go some other place out there, anywhere and hear some dog,..
here in contrary plays the one and only,
the Charlie Parker, and plays like a god.....
