This was recorded by me in 1974 on Spanish television in Barcelona on BETAMEX. I still have the tape. Maybe somebody can make a copy of it to get a better queality of this unique song.
Scott did also perform THE WORLD STRONGEST MAN at this Spanish programm.
The Plague is on the backside of the singele. It is also available on many diferent CD´s
The Jacques Brel version and Marc Almond version are cool, too. I love songs that don't quite make sense, like this one, MacArthur Park, Good Morning Starshine...
Scott along with Bolan, Elvis and Bowie really are the ultimate in perfect pop stars; imaginative, good looking, talented, creative and slightly naughty. x
believe me , I have the SOUND OFF ! eeeeww wow eeeeew wow eeeew ! this lad is one sick dude ! along with his followers eeeew wow eeeew wow eeeew wow eeeew oooow woo THATS MUSIC ? THATS SHIT !
That's the line that jumps out at me, 'cause this is apparently from 1967, and I had no idea people said that at the time! I always figured "ass" as a suffix only really started to happen about fifteen or twenty years ago.
It's don't think it's being used as a suffix, though. "Ass" has been used as a word for "stupid person" for centuries. So he's just adding "stupid" to it for emphasis. It's not quite the same as the how the word is used today.
I'm not sure where this conversation begins, so pardon if this is redundant. The lyric "cute, cute in a stupid ass way" is the approximate translation from Brel's French lyrics, "Beau, beau, et con a la fois" (I think -- it could be "bon," but that seems unlikely, and I"ve listened to that version about 5,000 times, so I'll go with what I've always heard), literally "handsome and idiotic [but a little stronger than that, "dumbass" works] at the same time."
That episode, arguably the best of the entire run of the program, but heck, how do you pick one, is where I first heard this song and the name Scott Walker. Since then I have become a big fan of Walker and expanded my collection of Brel''s songs from one to about 100. WHO SAYS Ab Fab wasn't educational? They should run it right after Sesame Street so kids today know what really matters -- "Names, names, names!" -- right up front!
Classic baritone voice? Maybe then but have you heard his more recent stuff? He's given up singing for screaming. He could be a male Yoro Ono. Meanwhile Marc is still singing like a human being and not wasting his amazing voice screaming like a loon, like Scott.
Well I obviously like Marc's singing. He seems like a nice bloke as well. Who cares if he is gay? Not a problem. As for Scott, have a look on YT for "Scott Walker Rosary". Poor Scott. He's lost it now in the voice and also the looks department. What a shame, and what a waste, using a good voice like his in that way. Angst in moderation is Ok but that? Waaaaaaa!
Walker is still a strong vocalist and singer, especially considering his age. However, the difference in intent between classic and contemporaroy Walker is night and day. His singing on the Drift while still technically sound and emotive is designed more to provoke feelings of unease and paranoia, not please the ear. While you may not enjoy edgey Avant Garde, a much smaller circle does. His talents are not being wasted, he's only grown as a composer and artist.
This was a version that I was unfamiliar with. Marc Almond's was the one I knew and loved. This one is good too and he really does have a great voice, but I'm afraid I prefer Marc's. It far more grandiose than this... and sounds like an old Hollywood epic. I think more thought was put into Marc's. Marc does act out the lyrics like Scott does and in some parts better. 10/10 song however.
marc almonds version pales in comparison to this ,notice how scott acts out the song, like he truly believes what he,s singing about.NOW GO AND WATCH ALMONDS VERSION!!see what i mean?
Let's be fair, Marc did a good take on this song. I agree that Scott's superior, but give Marc a little credit. His version pointed me in the direction of Scott Walker, actually, so he probably did so for many others. Of course, there's no topping Scott!
Yes, I have. I really like both--don't get me wrong. Brel was an innovator, and obviously Scott would agree. Marc Almond did a nice one, too. I think it is possible to equal or better an original, but--yes--Brel's original is truly great.

I completely agree, I never heard the word ass used in this context until around the 80's, and it makes me wonder.

cool! I love that show. While this sounds familiar, I cannot place it in the show - how did they use it?

The song was in the episode Happy New Year when Patsy's sister Jackie came over to Eddy's house for a visit !

Patsy's sister Jackie comes for a visit, and Patsy claims this song was written about her. At the end, they play the song during the closing credits

That's very true. The third episode of Absolutely Fabulous was definitely the best. And the Jackie was so much fun in the second series.

No I haven't and if it's as described I'm sorry. Marc - singing? No no and thrice no. He should stick to cottaging.
