Look at her go! For someone who doesn't consider herself a 'dancer', a beg to differ, she most certainly is. I've been dancing for 16 years and when someone's got it, they've got it!
ok, there is a clearer version of this performance entitled "Kate Bush Rolling The Ball, Them Heavy People" elsewhere on youtube. Looking clearly at their faces, it is definitely not Pink Lady and the ladies in question are indeed older. Also, it shows a bit of interview where one of the ladies clearly speaks fluent English. While the girls of Pink Lady certainly had their talents, speaking English was not amongst them.
erm...this is NOT Pink Lady! Sorry! This is a definite. They don't look like them nor sound like them. There were many many popular female artist solo, duo, trio etc. singers in Japan at this time...and often different artists would get together on variety shows to do song covers. This could literally be anyone.
Also, the video does not designate who this is. The beginning only displays the song title in Japanese and then the lyrics. This coupled with the bad quality = Who the hell knows?
OMG, I was looking for the album version of this song and THIS is what I find!?! Bwahaha!!! WTF was THAT?!? G'lord, that was trippy. Cool and insane but... wow. On with my search...
Cheesetastic! This looks like it could have been a segment from the Star Wars Christmas Special. I was half wondering when Bea Arthur and Florence Henderson where going to appear in roller boogie garb.......
Fucking hell. I almost wet myself crying with laughter watching this. I absolutely adore Kate and have always been a life long fan...but...WTF???!! And some of the comments on this upload are comedy gold. Thanks guys for the shits and giggles.
What had Kate been smoking just before this show and can I pleae have some?!!! Utter camp madness and so wonderful - Kate's dancing is magical! and I love that karoke version of the song!
@arosegrowingold Oh how I treasure this, though...cheesetastic, yes, but it's the only out-and-out "Hollywood/Marilyn Monroesque" number Kate's ever done, and by God, if she doesn't do even this really well. She's precociously aware of how sensual she is and she looks like she's having a great time. Obviously, as prescient as Kate has been about upcoming music trends (or perhaps she caused them), she could not predict youtube...
That was cheesier than a direct hit on a Edam factory but it was fantastic all the same. Ohh Kate I love and respect you even more after seeing this. You got some moves. : )
Mashita sayonara matsui kenso samurai suzuki ko "LORRING ZA BORR", mayashi kamikaze mensai KETTU BUSHU. Big time singalong lady and one hot mamma. Hai!
This is pure gold! I didn't realize Kate promoted herself so heavily in Japan - and the Japanese certainly prefer their pop music to come from Japanese artists even though they love Western music.
This was a very savvy career move from Kate to combine the two elements of Japanese pop culture. She did TV adverts while she was there too - maybe the most commercial part of her career.
HAHAHAHA I really like this version and Kate's such a wonderful sport! I'm going to Taiwan this summer, Kareoke is pretty big over there, anybody know of a kareoke place with Rolling the Ball? Would love to sing this song there!!!
@rinfster Really? I think the Pink Lady girls were younger than this they were a musical duo who had their own US hit with "Kiss In The Dark" in about 1979...and then they even got their own US variety show, despite not speaking a word of English. I don't think this is them.
nothing could have prepared me for that. in what parallel universe did kate bush do this? i can't even begin to think WHEN she thoughts 'sure, japanese disco, sounds like a brilliant idea, when do we leave?'
I totally agree with the Good Sport Award! That's what I luv about her, she's a true artist in every sense but she doesn't seem to take herself too serously to have a little bit of fun...And she so ultra HOT in this one!
This is absolutely wonderful. I had no idea kate was such a brilliant disco dancer. Just goes to show, there was a time when kate was very much on the pulse of 'contemporary' pop culture.
Japanese singers are Pink Lady, the Japanese equivalent to the Donnie and Marie Osmond. It's from a mainstream Japanese program. BTW Kate broke it big in Japan way before she gained stardom in the US. Her first LP had the controversial cover of her in a jazzercise aerobic tank top.
I remember them from when I was a child, they had a show in the US that lasted all of 6 episodes. Everyone I tell about it has no idea what I'm talking about and thinks I'm crazy. Imagine how relieved I was to find that it wasn't just a hallucination.
The two Japanese ladies remind me of the two Vietnamese guys singing in "Air America", with Mel Gibson. Is the song called "Them Heavy People" or "Rolling the Ball"?
I admit to being a bit non-plussed when I first watched this but now I love it. The cheesy 70's brass heavy version of the song is definitely so-bad-its-good. Kate's sudden appearance at the end for a Vegas-show style boogie is a true moment of music video zen. This is what the internet was in invented for.

What the hell was that? I can'r quite believe I just saw that!
Kate lets the Japanese pub band from hell do something undescribable to her music and then behaves like Pan's People?????!????!???
Did she leave her credibility at Tokyo airport by mistake?
What did EMI Japan have to make her do this and that Seiko ad? Compromising photos of her with that dolphin or something?
arosegrowingold 2 years ago
Well, y'know, it was early in her career. To her credit, that Japanese promo tour was the last time she let anything even approaching that happen.
