Elvis Presley had his one artistic moment at the dials on his last recorded song before being yanked into the Army ...He fiddled the dials &added layers to come up with the licorice sounding Elvis that exists only -a- moment..."now and then theres a fool such as i " ...it connects here Bryan shows us where he meant
a really brilliant song..never heard anything like it before or since..by the way the "harp solo" is done by BRYAN FERRY..MCKAY and MANZANERA are equally great..."for your pleasure" is a one in a million album..nothing equals it..nothing equals the brilliance of ROXY MUSIC..what they did for modern/progressive music can not be matched, yet they are almost forgotten..
@801liveable unfortunately, they were never known, rather than being forgotten. part of that has to do with their change of style in the late 70s. Listen to this album, then listen to Manifesto, and i think you will see what i mean. i was 'there' and it was a bit depressing to see the change, although now 30 years later it's perfectly understandable. still, it was a difficult change to accept when a group changes from an art band to a semi-popular band. their early music was never known by most.
@salgoudsamoht that is. in the barren cultural wasteland of middle america 30, 35 years ago, the millions of lumpenproletariat had no idea that some fellows in another country were changing what rock music could be. then Mr. Bowie became huge, and yes, many forgot the first two Roxy Music albums, as the band changed personnel and their style developed in ways incremental at first, and then in ways quite drastic by the late 70s. as perceived in the usa. in suburban wastelands there 30 years ago.
@salgoudsamoht i disagree with you somewhat.they never received total acceptance in this country.some strong support in areas such as CLEVELAND and DETROIT.but i understand your point.i understand your point in the difference between "COUNTRY LIFE" and "MANIFESTO". the first being one of the greatest progressive albums of all time the other a mixed bag of art rock and light disco.i was there too in 1979 and it was a bit of a letdown.hey, but watered down ROXY MUSIC is better than no ROXY MUSIC.
@801liveable yes, you're right. i was near Memphis, TN in '75 and remember hearing Country Life right after it was released ('74?). it didn't make much of an impression on me. when Siren came out, i became a fan, but not a big fan. in university in the late 70s, i found the first Roxy Music album with Eno, and it blew me away. The 1st two albums are in one very important way - Mr. Brian Eno - different from their others. Street Life is an outstanding album, tho, and is probably my favorite.
@salgoudsamoht in reality ROXY MUSIC changed their music style twice.1973 when ENO left after this album came out.the music was a bit more mainstream but still offbeat and weird.fact is BRIAN ENO said his favorite ROXY album was "STRANDED" the first one after his departure..after "STRANDED" you had "COUNTRY LIFE" then "SIREN"..in 1978 with "MANIFESTO" the music changed again..as i posted earlier more dance ..more disco. to this day i believe the changes were made to suck in american audiences.
@801liveable his favorite Roxy Music without him, but the first was favorite when he was with the group. i have no idea if Mr. Eno has considered choosing one or the other as his number one all-time forever favorite Roxy Music album, but it would be interesting if he preferred a Roxy Music album without him rather than one with him, given his feeling for Mr. Ferry.
Sometimes people underestimate the special circumstances, culture, energy and accident of the moment that go into creating. What came from those few distictive years when Roxy Music was an Eno/Ferry collaboration could never be sustained or replicated like a Hollywood sequel. Who would want that?
@hundredsand there is a special and unique inspired time when a band first forms agreed.but it lasted longer than the ferry eno era.stranded, country life, siren even some of manifesto produced great moments.if ferry could stop believing that his voice sounds better when stripped of dynamic, menace and unique phrasing he might rediscover creative thought and write music that regains roxys past glory.
if only ferry would use this his real voice on new material.expressive unique ironic menacing, all qualities that made roxy mark 1 such a great band. andy phil and paul must be appalled with the nothingness that came out of new recorded material.

@macwhites I agree, nowadays he sounds like Julio Iglesias. Still good, but not as compelling as his early stuff.
