  • Im surprised they didnt choose an Asian-American cast. Some of my friends were a little dissapointed in the CHinese cast instead of picking Japanese actors, from what i remembered all the actors did a wonderful job of acting. I think they chose Chinese actors out of convinience and strategy. Unfortunatly Japanese actors are just not that popular(but arnt bad) Internationally and in america compared most of these Chinese actors. Regardless the film was wonderfully put together and was visual~

  • Great movie? But wtf? Music from The Last Samurai? @ Spectres In The Fog

  • Best film ever! And i think, Ziyi is the best chinese actress.

  • one of the best movies that i've seen!

  • thumbs up if you read the book!!!!!!! awesome!!!!

  • I'm working as a Geisha in Japan but I hate this movie

  • @hunkshunter liar

  • @muldurag I don't think she lied. She just doesn't know the difference between a geisha and a hooker

  • If anyone knows the song beginning at 1:16, please do tell!

  • why is the soundtrack from the last samurai at the end of the trailer?

  • hatsumomo = best villain

  • I wonder why the movie has such mixed reviews? Is the movie not authentic?

  • Best book and movie ever!!!

  • i just started reading the book. the movie looks cool.. -_- now i feel to lazy to lazy to read the book after seeing the trailer lol

  • This is definitely one of my favorite movies

  • A story like mine... was never been told. (DIED)

  • While watching it , i cried like a fool! One of the best movies i `ve ever watched, that`s for sure!!!! Memoirs of a geisha <333

  • @QuestCrew2000 That's exactly why I came here! Haha

  • zhang zi yi :3 <3

  • Zhang has contacts boy!

  • The book is amazing. The movie disappointed me a bit but its one of my top movies.

  • @bisquitmimzy Gong Li is from China -__-

  • Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh are all hot! :D.... none of them are Japanese though. I think Chinese and Gong Li is Korean. I like this movie, thumbs up.

  • all that shit surrounding prostitution...

  • @bbaaaalll a geisha isnt a prositute. she doesnt sell her body she sells art. they are often mistaken

  • @LILitaly16

Geisha is the highest class of prostitution. If you don't think geisha sold sex back then you are fooling yourself. Now I'm not sure.

  • @FlareCreative what i said was what the script said from the movie. But i dont think they still sell sex these days...

  • This is their real English. Not a dub. Right?

  • @Eggheadcobra yes there's no dub. The movie is shot in English.

  • Is there a point in the movie, with that, that little girl have blue eyes??

  • @Myushifu in the book she's described as having grey eyes, often grey eyes can be mistaken for blue or green depending on the lighting

  • Wow looks epic.. Im reading the book.. Im at the part where mameha is telling sayuri (chiyo) about the eel and the cave lol.. And how hatsymomo figured out mamehas plan :/ i wonder how things will go.. Must read on..

  • 1:06 is my favorite moment in this movie it is Steve Terada

  • i like this movie its just realy lond it took me 3 days to watch the whole thing its not that long i just kept zoning out and turning it off but i do like

  • Beautiful movie <3

  • i've read the book twice and seen the film a couple of times, and i must say they're both equally well done. usually film adaptations suck compared to the book, but this one is an exception :)

  • I am reading the book now and im really excited to watch the film after the book <3 x

  • @FunFearlessFashion

oh you should start reading it.. :)

I read it last year, and I was like so emotional..

It's one of the best books ever.. :) worth reading.. :)

  • a true life for Japanese people i guess, :)

  • an unforgettable movie..

ll totally be remembered 4 ever.

    EPIC

  • its a movie youll never 4get. its epic.

  • how many books are there? i heard there are diffrent versions i'm reading Geisha by Arther Golden ;P seems good so far, i'm only on ch.2 lol

  • I'm reading the book right now. It's 502 pages. The print is so small. I feel like I'm reading a Harry Potter-sized book or something.

  • some geisha were in fact prostitutes during the war not all were prostitutes others did sell their talents

  • how about the selling of the mizuage?is nt that selling of the body?

  • @rihanareeza read mineko iwasaki's memoires. she was a true geisha and she explains, among other things, the term of mizuage as well. hthhe term has 2 meanings so it's led to misunderstandings about geishas. the book "memoires of a geisha" , although prety acurate, is actualy fiction. mineko iwasaki's story isn't. it is a true one. I recomend it wholeheatedly.

  • @rihanareeza Geisha did sell their virginities. The ceremony is called mizuage and the money they earned was used to promote their debut as a geisha. In 1957, it became illegal for Geisha to do this but they say that it is still done in secret. Today, most geisha do not reach the time of their debut until they are at least eighteen so the option of selling their virginities is said to be optional. The ones that do choose to sell it have more money to use and more options. Such as getting a danna

  • @rihanareeza They were calling that selling their virginirty but sometimes they weren't having sex with the one buying her. Rich man sometimes only buyed geisha to ''impress'' people around them. :P

  • amazing movie!!!!

  • i have the book to..is just amezing like the movie!!!!

  • Steve Terada on the biike hahaha

  • the book was like so fudging majestic

  • @1776CavScout Yes it is. Was just listening to it today and realized that it was the same one. Its called "Red Warrior".

  • @SupahNerd also that man is Katsumoto if im right ; anyway im impresed because i saw last samurai first time in my life 4 days ago and now i see that they used same soundtrack here :O :D !

  • Just finished the book, which was amazing. Looking forward to the movie, now.

  • its the best movie i've ever seen, you can watch it a lot of times but u still not get bored of it, i just love this movie, everytime i watch it it makes me cry cuz its so beautiful! <3 i just can recommend it to everyone, just watch it!

  • 1:10 muy lindos ojos

  • This is definitely one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen - the imagery is unbelievable!

  • I just finished the book its epic. And now im gonna watch the movie ^-^ im exiteddd

  • i reallyyy thought that this is horror :o and oooo it's gong li!

  • i'm almost done with the book. i can't wait to watch this after i finish reading it ^.^

  • saw it 6 times, never get bored of this movie!

  • @TheBaibashaiba i know right!

this movie is awesome and has and awesome story as well

  • @TheBaibashaiba only 6 times?:) i saw this movie more than 15 times..

  • Her eyes! O_O

  • its like how green eyes are rare in china....

  • OMG Steve Terada from Quest crew at 1:08- 1:13. It´s cute how he crashed :)

  • If you all want 2 know the truth about Geisha then get a library card and go read a BOOK! And no I don't mean Arthur Golden's: "Memoirs of a Geisha" because that's a load of crap. Read a book by Liza Dalby or Lesley Downer. They wrote books on Geisha and their lives that is all fact. Their books are not novels. Or read a book by an actual Geisha like Mineko Iwasaki or Kyoko Aihara! Stop relying on Wikipedia 4 all of your info and please stop fighting when you don't even know what's what!!

  • @jinnyboy8 its called historical fiction dumb ass. dont call it a load of crap because i bet that you wouldnt be able to write a whole damn book like that.

  • steve terada :D

  • Last Samurai song??

  • i haven't read the book yet.. but the fil;m is amazing! i love it! x

  • I'm half way through the book and am so tempted to watch the film, should i wait until i finish?? Its such a great book :)

  • @thepennybugs yes, wait!

  • @crlnewlls oops i watched it, its a good film but as ever the book has so much more detail

  • @thepennybugs Same!

  • her eyes were NEVER this blue when I watched the film O.o anyway people have said it's very inaccurate :C shame, I like this film :3

  • @MomoHasMuffins Actually, the film couldn't be more accurate about the true lives of geisha, what they were like, and how they lived. This film has been praised by many former and current geisha in Japan for its ability to preserve their true culture and way of life.

  • @FioreiMeer really? :D now I'm at peace again ^_^ thanks.

  • 0:39 -0:42

    Her eyes are dreamy.

  • HEY ITS THAT GUY FROM INCEPTION

  • the book is so much better than the movie!

  • This book is awesome. Hatsumomo is a biiiiiitch.

  • Lol 1:09 the guy who crashes the bike is Steve Terada from Quest Crew :D

  • @Sofia1Art lol are you serious?! Thats awesome!!! XD

  • Jesus...people get it right! Geisha are NOT prostitutes! As Mameha says in the movie, they sell their talents, not their bodies. They are artists! The word "geisha" actually translates to 'artist' for god's sake! Memoirs of a Geisha actually was very accurate. Geishas were not portrayed as prostitues in either the book OR the film. The only exception would be Hatsumomo who was evicted from the Nitta okiya and is implied to have gone to a whorehouse.

  • @dragongirl007 The act of selling off a geisha's virginity is also not popular, widely accepted, or necessary to be considered a geisha.

  • @dragongirl007 Exactly!

I think in the book she said some of the lower, lower geisha sold themselves, but that theyw ere more like prostitues with a painted face that actual geisha.

and in the movie Mameha even said that the word Geisha meant "artist"

  • @dragongirl007 but didn't they say in the movie that they sell their virginity or maidenhood?

  • @KiwiGirl941 Dunno if you already figured it out but here's the deal: generally a 'virgin geisha' is like a 'virgin wife' so indeed they had to loose their virginity at some point & indeed in old times it has been 'sold' to a rich supporter of said geisha...But don't necessarily think of forced sex - tho' it was present -, there were actually practices which made the geisha feel more comfortable...In modern times geisha/maiko usually loose their virginity with a partner they've chosen...

  • i post random shit

  • "insert ass" Why you no ass mac cheese

  • *insert meme* Why U No use Japanese!?

  • What's up with the blue eyes?

  • @hilaryrules91 in the book it's said that Sayuri has too much water in her soul and body. That's the reason of the blue eyes

  • @hilaryrules91 Blue eyes are considered a gift in Japan. Japanese people can have blue eyes naturally, but the bluer they are, the more rare and special.

  • Im currently reading the book :D

  • That guy who falls off the bike is from Quest crew xD! lol

  • i just read the book and it became one of my favourites so i really hope that the movie is great too..

  • Chinese got bigger eyes and Japanese got slanted eyes

  • @5566NT lol....

  • book is so much better.

  • I'm overwelmed by the beauty of the Geishas<3 I like the Geisha culture in the past especially 50-100 years ago. It's the ultimate magic sensation. It's truly art! I'd love to experience it myself. I love the movie and the book. Fantastic!

  • This movie totally ignores Japanese culture. The kimonos, makeup, architectures, dance...all except sumo scene look weird to Japanese. The book is amazing though.

  • isn't a geisha just a sophisticated prostitute?

  • @pavener No, a Geisha is a master of the arts who entertain rich men with their knowledge and arts. An Oiran is a female prostitute.

  • @pavener nope. they are called Oiran.

  • honestly .. i can't see how it got the oscar

  • the movie is awesome..but the book is a bit better :)

  • i've only read the book...and as I read I felt like Lucy Lui would be great for Hatsumomo

  • unforgetable movie! zhang ziyi is very beutifull

  • I just watched it, I really recomend it, it was AMAZING. A film ill always remember:)

  • wow i can see why ppl like this...its really good...

i shall see it someday when it comes on tv

  • Intense. I wanna read the book and see the movies so badly!

  • I'm currently reading this. Hatsumomo is a bitch.

  • Near the end sounds exactly like the last samurai soundtrack, cool looking film though

  • good book, good movie!

  • whow i love ziyi zhang shes so beautiful ive seen her play in many movies but in this she gets my hart pounding fast damm shes so sexy .

  • :/ this movie reminds me to my life..i'm 16 like Sayuri, and i'm in love with my music maneger, who is in his 30's..:/ but he doesn't opserves my feelings..

  • @Karoline1995ify Those love usually doesn't last. You're 16, you must just love a leader, fatherly-figure in your life.....not real love. Try more life experiences before thinking about love.

  • @cosmosvision maybe youre right..but i feel that i can't love even a boy of my age..:/

  • @Karoline1995ify But you will. There is a certain sense of charm in a man when he is working his hardest, battling the toughest things in life....sadly it doesn't happen when you're 16. A 25 yr old man is much more interesting than 16 boys....trust me. Wait a bit, grow up a bit yourself. You'll feel it.

  • @Karoline1995ify that's called a crush. and it's good he doesn't have feelings for you because then there would be something wrong with him

  • the greatest movie ever.i loved it

  • I tend to watch Asian movies that are flat out boring.. is this one of them? Because I want to watch this..

  • Nice film though Chinese playing Japanese characters seems very fake..

  • @neotokyomedia its still a great movie . :))

  • Also, why WOULDN'T this movie be in english? First off, the movie was filmed in America (as it shows in the behind the scenes DVD) and second off the Director is American. It was also all based off of a story that was written in english. -_-

  • From what I understand though, before World War II Geishas sold their virginity and took on danna (patrons). it was after World War II that more laws took place that made these things obsolete. For instance, in Sayo Masuda's autobiography I believe she said that she sold her virginity more than once to make money. However, if you look at Mineko Iwasaki's book she lived a more luxurious and modern Geisha life.

  • I don't mean to upset anyone, but doesn't 'geisha' mean 'prostitute'? So, if it is, the title is basically 'Memories of a Prostitute'.

  • @hypnosegirl16 No, geisha means "artist". Geisha are certainly not prostitutes or courtesans, they were painted that way in Memoirs of a Geisha to appeal to the sex-obsessed western culture. Memoirs of a Geisha is fiction.

  • @kipkayify Oh, well I read the book & that older lady definitely seemed to act like a prostitute.

  • @hypnosegirl16 Yeah, like I said, Memoirs of a Geisha is fiction. That's not how real geisha act.

  • @kipkayify Ok, thank you for telling me.

  • I don't get how anyone wouldn't prefer to have the film in Japanese with subtitles. To have the main character being played by two Chinese girls who couldn't even speak English before the filmed is just bad. Ruined the whole thing for me.

  • thumbs up, if you watched the movie at 2011.

  • why do they speak english..? it's stupid

  • @meannaful so people don't have to sit with a dictionary or translator or read annoying subtitles through the movie. Nothing more annoying than reading subtitles in a movie

  • @zanipeace I don't understand what's so annoying with subtitles... I find it more annoying when a movies story takes place in Japan or Germany and everyone speaks english. I'm from Sweden and I speak swedish with my friends and most swedes speaks swedish so it's stupid to make a movie wich takes place in Sweden where everyone speaks english...

  • @meannaful cuz they cant speak japanese

  • @meannaful watch it in germany and she will speak german :D amazing isn´t it? i think it´s great that it´s in english. subtitles distract from the actual film.

  • I watched the movie and I hated Hatsumomo. She plays her role beautifully :)

Very good movie. Top 10 all time stuff!!

  • a beautiful movie. enough said. now, go and watch it!

  • Should i watch the movie first or read the book ? Im so impatient ^ ^

  • @killerk565656 the book have lots more details compare to the movie. but i do enjoy both of em! ^^ so if u want more details and information of the plot, read the book! :D

  • @MyTeenLifeLoLTV Lool, true, thanks x

  • EPIC!

  • lol its kinda funny that most of the actresses are chinese.

  • @AndroidGZS

haha i know i was just thinking the same thing like "hmm why arent they speaking in chinese...oh probly cause its a japanese based movie" haha

  • @lCamboSoupl Shot in China though :)

  • @hanhorror

hahaha this movie is all backwords lol i still love it though

  • @AndroidGZS Well at least Steve Terada is japanese...and yeah I found that funny seeing that this is a japanese based movie

  • @AndroidGZS WTF O_O!

  • @AndroidGZS yes but because chinese actors speak a better english than japanese actors.

  • Comment removed

  • @AndroidGZS Probably cos there are soo many of them :)

  • @AndroidGZS Cuz they know us American's are to dumb to know the difference. Honestly, i dont know the difference. But I call someone who is Asian, Asian...whether they are Korean, Hmong, Chinese, Japanese....Etc...I dont want to offend, so I just say Asian, and ask where they are from later lol

  • @aah172 yeah u know asians from different countries have different cultures, hence they get offended when the get categorized into one group.

  • haha way ta go steve ^_^
