When I was a young boy a neighbor on my street had a 928. It was always parked out front on the driveway. I'd always check it out when walking or skateboarding by it. I thought it looked so futuristic and cool, I admired it. It was a champagne color.
Beautiful promo, I want two; one early one just like what is shown in the very first shot in that mineral grey (?) color with designer cloth seats and phone dial wheels. To go alongside that one, a 1995 GTS model, dark blue over gray. =-)
I have a '79 928 that I traded my '73 Mercedes Benz 460SE which ran for it. I have no idea if this 928 runs or not.....I don't even have a key to it. I do have the paperwork to it but I'm in no position right now to try and get it running. It's been sitting for 3 years or so in my garage with my equally challenged '83 944.
Rabid Porschephiles' always believed that the 911 is the only car that Porsche builds hence the timeless and perfect 928, historic 924 & Carrera version/944 got killed off. I really really hate them.
The average person misunderstands genius. Freddie Porsche wanted this to replace the 911, but most people did not understand what was happening in the 928, and didn't want change. I bet he's pissed now. The average person is pretty much a dope, which explains the death of Sony Beta (though preferred by professionals) and the rise of cretins like Sarah Palin. Me? I suppose I'm pretty average. But I own a 928.
This is a awesome video - emphasizes the efforts made on this great car - wish Porsche continued to develop it through to today. But lagging sales on hatchbacks and especially GT coupes which were no longer in vogue during the 90's ended all that, yet now they're back... Imagine a twin turbo V8 928?....it would more than run with the Astons, Jags and Ferraris....and kick that CTS-V coupe silly....
@theblackcrowe maybe cause you drove the slowest model and it was auto... Only pussies drive autos... 928 gts had 350hp and 365lbs of torque... Top speed of 171mph so u stfu... Bitc*
you know-it-alls that praise the 928 obviously have never owned one. If you have never owned or driven one, you need to stfu about how "great" they were. I had an '81 with auto tranny that was the slowest pos on earth. Had to sell it because it was embarrassing getting beat by old Chevy trucks at stoplight drags.
Fancy leaving your golf trolley on the course ! Joking apart a beautiful car even today. I saw my first one in the south of France in 1980 and it looked as if it was from mars crowds flocked round it.
4m48s? anti corrosion warranty? I have owned a 1989 928GT, it has covered 280,000 KM & has never needed welding, nor does it need any now. Bought in Bristol 2004 & I have just driven around the far north of Scotland averaging 27MPG, (10.4L @100KM). Nothing about these cars is hugely expensive unless you get the franchised dealer to do the clutch. This one was a bit awkward on the single track roads though, & the only "disaster" I have suffered has been a front wheel bearing. Not bad at all!
I think Porsche made the 928 as a replacement for the 911. I suppose it was an upmarket alternative to the 911. only true petrol heads know how underrated this car was. Even Tony Montana from Scarface knew this was a great car!!
LOOKS MORE MODERN THAN THE NEW PANAMERICANA SALOON. THE PORSCHE BUILD QUALITY IN THE 80S WAS SO HIGH...NOW I AM NOT SO SURE...I HAD A NEW BOXSTER , DID NOT LIKE THE QUALITY- IT WAS LIKE A VW POLO. SOLD IT- GOT AN 80S 928S2- LOVE IT! NEW IS NOT BETTER ...GO AND TRY A GOOD EXAMPLE OF AN 80S PORSCHE (NOT A HEAP) AND DISCOVER THE SOLIDITY OF THESE CARS! (OH AND THESE ARE FAR MORE RARE THAN A BOXSTER ETC - WHIOCH EVERY CHAV SEEMS TO DRIVE- SAD- PORSCHE BUILT TOO MANY).
ok i LOVE these cars but my father and i go to numerous porsche shows cause were in the pscca and people allways trash takt the 928s but in todays market u can get one of these for a fairly low price like 10,000 dollars for a good one
This is the most incredible 928 video I've ever seen... for one simple reason. It shows what the 928 looked like next to other cars of that time. I've always respected the 928 (even though that's not cool to do amongst ignorant 911 snobs) for being an amazing car.... but to see how many light-years ahead of the cars around it is NUTS. My jaw dropped. It was like seeing a bikini-clad supermodel in a nunnery. Shocking.
These cars truly are a rolling work of engineering and art!
I had the pleasure of riding to high school in a 928 a few days a week. The father of a really good friend owned a Porsche dealership in the mid to late 80's, and he was permitted to drive most any used car on the lot. We opted for the 928 over the 911 and 944 models most days, since we both really loved its design, raw sound and the crazy power of the 4.5 litre V8. Two 17 year old kids in 928.. what the hell was his dad thinking?
I love how this commercial accentuates who should be buying this car. The posh british accent (rrrolling the r's) and the music complete this image. XD
Just look a the kind of cars Ford, GM, Chrysler and Renault were building at the time. They looked like pathetic. This car was a giant leap forward. It still looks good today.
I always thought that this car is amazing. Imagine for a moment you are a pedestrian in the early 80's and you see a 928 in the middle of traffic. I guess you think it's an UFO or something similar. The 928 was too advance for its time and sadly people didn't understand this car.
The 928 has to be one of the greatest automobiles ever made. It never fit the Porsche mold so it never really got the respect it truly deserves on the world stage. I believe if an unknown German company built the exact car, it would have more respect. When it came out it just was not what a Porsche was supposed to be so lots of people discounted it. That is sad but good at the same time because enthusasts can get a world class car for average car prices.
I did a very long time ago. I was importing into the US. LOL I way over priced it so I could use it as my personal car for about 6 months. I also had several others for short periods of time. I have never had one that was old but when they were only a few yrs old they were one heck of a car. The only comparable car I had was an M 635 but that was also modified and not stock from the factory like the 928. I assume 20 yrs later they are still very good cars given the original build quality.
I have two, an 84 S-Euro 5spd and an 87 Strosek Widebody 5spd with headers, etc. Great cars, parts can be hard to come by and mechanics want an arm and a leg to work on them.
Resale value is terrible, but it's the owner's fault for letting them go so cheaply. This one sold for that, so the next one sells for even less. It should be working the other way around but people get to the point they just want to get rid of them.
im tryin to get one of these once I get out of college and secure a job. im goin for auto technician. see my dad had a 944, I loved that car. Im still kinda confused on what one I want but I want a porsche for sure.
ditto as a 928 owner of 10 years, there is nothing from that time period that could match what this car had...and lemme tell u a hell of a lot more stable at high speed than my 911 thats worth twice as much :)
Worthless? It is worth as much as you are willing to put into it. Perhaps not to another person, but to you, the owner. On the used car market it may not be gaining value, but people like me who know what a great car it is shouldn't care about its resale value. Besides, a low resale value means guys like me who aren't crazy rich can afford to buy one. In fact, I am about to buy a running 1979 928 for just $1500.
my dad finally got rid of his, it was a cash dump,b ut beautiful. We would do burnouts and donuts in parking lots and sometimes take it out to car shows.
It never got the respect it wanted, mainly due to the v8 engine which made it an oddity of porsche cars. It was never as desirable as the boxer.
Quirky but very informative and original, seeing a 928 on the road was an epiphany for me as a kid. I thought the aliens had landed! Every other car looked like horse and cart in comparison! My 928S4 after many years ownership feels like a part of my body now, I know its tantrums and its magic and so it will remain, a genuine masterpiece :)
