  • A lot of Philipino (Filipino) people are amazing with their singing voice, but she is exceptional.

  • I absolutely LOVE Lea Salonga and can't get over how talented she is, but I think this rendition is too much in a pop style - not what it's meant to be.

  • She has a beautiful voice for Eponine, Fantine, but NOT Think of me!!! This song is very, very beautiful, but with Lea singing, it doesn't luck as half good as it should be. But I really love how Sierra Boggess sings it :)

  • @augsal Yes I love Sierra's version! She is my favorite Christine. I personally think that this version is interesting because it's so different than what we normally hear. But of course I respect your opinion.

  • I sing this A capella on my page:) go watch

  • I always thought to sing this song, you had to have a super-high, operatic, soprano. Lea has proven me wrong. This my favorite of all renditions I've heard of this song.

  • OK I AM A BIG FAN OF LEA....BUT HEY,THE FOUNDATION USED TO HER DID NOT DO JUSTICE HERE....just saying...

  • Wow! Beautiful! Of course I may be biased as I've been in love with her since I first saw her in Miss Saigon as Kim.

  • she is such an awesome talent, the voice of an angel. she is a once in a life time performer and we should feel so blessed to have her talent be shown in our lives..i could listen to her sing all day...

  • This song is beautiful ... She is talented

  • Damn she's gonna be the next Minnie driver!

  • It's a great version. The only problem is she doesn't do those thingys. Falcettos? Is that what you call them? She doesn't do much falcettos. But still, she's a great singer and i love this. Lea is awesome. :)

  • I love Lea!!! <3

  • I like this and I don't at the same time. I always felt this was meant to be more of an operetta vs a musical. Lea has a beautiful voice but it's VERY broadway vs semi opera, I just like the operatic vowels I guess lol

  • I hope she redoes this song, all of it.

  • every song, she sings it perfectly.

  • its so fast!!!!!!!!

  • @beltingbaritone i'm sorry... Its just that i'm also a great fan of her... And I'm totally in love with her voice

  • im sorry but this was terrible, the song is an octive 2 low

  • I've heard her on the "Miss Saigon" soundtrack. She was great on that but this isn't her song. She's focusing on the words but she's not giving the impression that she feels them like Emmy Rossum did. While this is obviously part of a medley of ALW songs, I was a little disappointed with this version.

  • @Elric33239 At least she doesn't sound like her voice is going to shatter anytime she reaches higher than an F5, like Emmy's did! Ugh...

That said, Lea, being a mezzo, couldn't carry Christine onstage. However, the joy of concert performances, for singers, is that we are able to step outside our fach and sing arias (which may in fact sound lovely in our voices) from roles that we would be unable to perform in full.

  • @AceofGallifrey Interesting comment regarding Emmy Rossum. What you label a vocal flaw I consider a charming quality that brings tears to my eyes when I hear her. While I'm by no means a trained singer like you apparently are, I'm not as moved by a technically precise voice as I am by an admitedly flawed one that's capable of emiting strong emotions from the listener. You can go on and on about Lea and Sarah's versions of Christine's arias and I'll still say that they don't move me like Emmy's.

  • @Elric33239 Let's not bring Sarah into this. She was good, but I don't like her voice any more than I like Emmy's (though Emmy's voice is lovely as long as she stays out of her upper range where the sound is all pinched and tight). If I were to rave about a Christine, it would probably be Gina Beck or Sierra Boggess, or possibly Katie Hall, who brings the same naivete (and a similar vocal colour and weight, but better-executed) to the role that Emmy did. That said, I respect your opinion.

  • @Elric33239 iu agree with you-- i liked emmy's best. it wasn't too professoinal to sound unhuman, but it was still a clearly practiced voice.

  • @AceofGallifrey she's soprano.

  • @joewhite31 No she's not. She has a range down to a D# below middle C, and a very dark, rich color to her voice that is extremely typical of a mezzo. Trust me, I would know. I am also a mezzo (a very highly trained one at that, with an excellent diagnostic ear) and her voice is almost stereotypically mezzo-soprano, and has almost none of the characteristics one associates with the soprano voice.

  • @AceofGallifrey Wath her singing Pie Jesu and King & I recording.

  • @joewhite31 Yes, I have heard that. That is Lea using her whistle range. Just because someone is a mezzo-soprano doesn't mean that they do not have a very versatile range. I myself have a range high enough to sing the entire role of Christine (including the high E upon entering the Lair), but that doesn't change the fact that my voice is heavier than any soprano. When a mezzo reaches into the extreme high ranges (anything above G, typically), the voice narrows out like that. She's a mezzo.

  • @AceofGallifrey She's a lyric soprano who can sing mezzo role. Watch her singing West Side Story. "One hand, one heart" and "tonighy"- sounds like a true soprano, pretty much like Judy Khun, Soprano has wider range than mezzo-soprano. Pie Jesu is a good example.

  • Comment removed

  • @AceofGallifrey She's not singing in her whistle register, that's Carey's trademark, that's actyually a very high head voice that is typically produced by soprano singers.

  • @AceofGallifrey *watch

  • You tease.

  • LOL ... the last part never happened. Found out after I've watched the complete performance of Broadway Medley. It was a horrible tease, but I still love her. XD

  • Whoever says that this woman is a soprano is crazy... her tone is too warm and she's much too comfortable in her lower/medium chest voice to be a soprano. Also a soprano would have nooo problem singing this. Lea sounds great, but nothing like Brightman, Boggess and the other sopranos who've sung this. Besides, every role she's played on Broadway, all the music was written for a strong mezzo-soprano.

  • @beltingbaritone I think this is keyed lower. It doesn't sound right?

  • @mbryan89 Well...depends on how you define 'right'. I'm pretty sure it's not the original key, that's a lot higher. But as the earlier comments say, I'm pretty sure she's more mezzo-soprano than soprano.

  • @MagicklessSorceress Oh, I agree she's a mezzo. I misread a comment earlier. I meant by "right" that it didn't sound like the original key. I would rather hear Lea in her lower register anyway, it is so warm and rich.

  • @MagicklessSorceress her voice loops into low to high notes....

  • @smallsis222 Uh...what about it?

  • @mbryan89 It does sound lower now that you mention it. The mezzo soprano version, that she sings, is gorgeous though. Love her. <3

  • @beltingbaritone it doesn't matter if the voice of a singer is soprano or not.... it depends on how they deliver the song....

  • @smallsis222 Yeah, I know. :-) She delivers it so beautifully, too. She's a favorite of mine. I just posted that 'cause a friend of mine and I had an argument about her voice type. Lol. She definitely has a gift. I can listen to her all day long. :-)

  • @beltingbaritone Have you heard her singing Pie Jesu or Panis Angelicus?

  • @beltingbaritone She's actually a lyric soprano. Watch her own rendition of One hand, One Heart and Tonight from West Side Story. Sopranos can have a strong mezzo voice. She has no problem singing this, it's just the tempo.

  • @joewhite31 Wow! Haven't heard her sing those before. Gorgeous high notes! I stand corrected. I was only basing it on her tone since it's so warm on her low notes here and it's very rich overall. But hearing those gorgeous As in Tonight and the end note in One Hand, One Heart, I'm definitely impressed. She must be one of those amazing 5-6 octave singers if she can handle all types of songs. Makes me lover her even more. <3

  • and that's what you call... holy gwakamoly! why did you cut the end part of the song? T_T

  • she was so young here.

  • I believe she has the softness for this song, yet she isn't a powerful enough singer for it. Yes it was good, but that's all.

  • I don't see why there's so much critics here....I think it was among the best covers I've ever heard....<3 I think her voice is perfect for this song.

  • eep, sorry not a fan of this one. Definitely a fan of hers but this song either does not suit her voice or could have been arranged differently. I've seen and heard many versions.. and the common thing is probably the innocence and lightness that the character would have in her debut at the opera.

  • i like you beautyfull woderful voice i feel so good

  • Who wants to bet that the 70 dislikes are all because she didn't sing that last note?

  • the best!!! congratulations!!!

  • Mezzo doesn't just mean singing low. Mezzo describes the tone of the person's voice. It simply means the tone is darker and more deep. Most, if not all, Mezzos can and do sing as high as other sopranos, it just has a darker sound.

  • ...... YOUUUUUUUUU!

  • too much dipping action to reach higher notes... I think she's got an amazing voice but it doesn't suit this.

  • It was too fast.still love her voice.

  • What happened at the end? Right it's supposed to be a high pitch? YOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i think lea amazing voice too

  • song for soprano

watch putri ayu think of me

  • They really intended this to be sung in a slightly pop way because after her stint in miss saigon lea was packaged as a pop artist...she was a pop artist before miss saigon.....

  • I love, love, love Lea's take on this song - different, mesmerizing, and showcases her beautiful voice!

My guitar chord book has the original key at C#, with Lea doing E (one-and-a-half notes/three steps higher); if Sarah B used C#, she would have used the higher octave so she could do it operatic style (or Sarah could have also used E, just operatic style). In any case, it doesn't really matter, as one could never go wrong indeed with a talent such as Lea Salonga.

  • WHY does this video end right before the Tonic note of that phrase!!?? It's like the biggest tease ever! Why would you do that!?

  • @dcarroll86 because it never happened

  • @diabolicsmily What do you mean it never happend? She didn;t sing it?

  • @diabolicsmily lmfao!!!!

  • @diabolicsmily yeah sure

  • @dcarroll86 This clip was taken from a medley of songs. Right after the last line here, the music transitioned into the other song. I would have totally loved hearing her do the missing last note, as she would have been awesome!

  • @dcarroll86 tell me about it ...

  • I love Lea...beautiful and talented. I'm glad she stopped wearing Mao Tze Dong's clothes though.

  • A bit fast paced for the song but hard to go wrong with this talent.

  • Fantastic!

  • actually the term "falsetto" is used for guys in tenor..and "head tone" is it's counterpart for sopranos

  • I thought Lea was an Alto? Never mind what her voice classification is. I LOVE HER! and I love the video.what's wrong with it?! it's really very nice.

the video's quite BITIN ah. hahaha. why cut it on the climax part?haha!

  • Comment removed

  • I love Lea, but this isn't her type of song. It was ment to be operatic but it wasn't potrayed as such almost pop sounding.

  • WORST place to end the song!

  • I was really looking forward to the end. BUT. It just went OOOOOF! *done* Hahaha. Thanks for posting though! :)

  • As usual Lea is amazing! she should have played Christine!

  • Lea is such a beautiful and unbelievably talented lady. I love her dearly!

  • i like the way she sings the song...my hair is standing...amazing

  • princess jasmine is singing phantom.

my two favorite things combined haha

  • funny how people expected Lea to have sung this song in it's original version especially the Pinoys. It's a concert for TV for crying out loud! sa channel 9 pa and this looks very late 80's -- mid 90's. sa palagay nyo ba mag rrate ito sa kung hardcore classical ang attack nila? Again, TV!

  • when are you going to have a concert here in manila please?

  • for this song, I think you need to make the notes last longer. Don't make it faster.

    :)

  • I happen to love Lea's take on this song.

  • i love her version of this song.wish there was a mp3 somewhere~!

  • for those who says she ruined it, u should learn music....

  • lea is a mezzo, thus the lower take on the song. Coluratura and lyric sopranos should be singing this for they can easily hit the high notes... like Dame Kiri te Kanawa and Sarah Brightman.

  • lea is a mezzo, thus the lower take on the song. Coluratura and lyric sopranos should be singing this for they can easily hit the high notes... like Dame Kiri te Kanawa, Sarah Brightman, and Sarah Bogess.

  • it sounds great...it just seems like she rushed thru it.

  • I love Lea's voice!!

  • one of my favourite pieces from my favourite musical :D

  • i really like lea tbf, but ive gotta be true, she ruined this song by lowering it. i im not sure if she can sing in her top soprano voice, but she shouldnt of tried doing something different with the song tbf. :/

  • @itsryanfrank You gotta be kidding me! Ruined it? I think not. Surely everyone has his own tastes and in mine, this is the best rendition of this number I have heard. To each his own.

  • @JGorka25 nooo, she just ruined it. lol

  • @itsryanfrank its a matter of preference and i like this one better. its not irritating to the ears

  • its very fast

  • i have goosebumps everytime i hear her great voice!

  • Cannot this video be uploaded in its entirety?

  • lol awkward cut.

She's amazing. as always. so talented and such a lovely voice.

  • ...where's the "YOU!"??

  • wat happened to the last note? :S

  • may i know when/where did lea perform this number?? it's a rare footage and i've not seen her singing phantom songs anywhere else! and do you have the full video??

  • @minzzaboo "...more singig [I'm going to assume you meant singing] than opera" ? What the heck does that mean?

  • @minzzaboo This was one of the most stupid comments I have ever read. What do you even mean by that?

  • @tenor220 I think they meant its more more mainstream sounding than traditional opera and how this song was sung in the actual musical.

  • @XOOOOElizabethOOOOX That doesn't change that it was an incredibly poorly phrased statement.

  • saan ba to? mukang sa pilipinas.. hahaha

  • @kitsilog sa PICC yan. Pa concert ng Sunlife of Canada 100 years anniversary. Kasama jan ang The Company at Audie Gemora.

  • The video is cut short. Why not allow her to finish the song?

  • #OMG fabulous Miss Lea!!~~XD

  • WHYYY cut it?

  • i will the song was full =( she's sings this soo amazingly !

  • Its like Disney does Phantom of the Opera. Lea has wonderful voice.

  • Lea has the ability to move you through song but not here..sorry but it's just great singing, not moving at all and way to fast. Love her but I don't care for this performance.

  • can somebody post this again??? i wanna hear the ending note!! i am sure that it was great!!

  • Please post the whole song, it's rude to cut it off in the middle!

  • OK cutting that off was rude

  • passt nicht so ganz sie hat eine stimme die würde sich in einen musical gut machen aber es hat einen schönen nachklang

  • aaaaaaaaac it cuts off at the best note at the end... wonder if she hit it

  • @3ternalBeauty

the best note is the very end. you dont hear it in the movie but you do on the soundtrack.

  • she sings very... disney.

  • @saga01b It worked well in Mulan :-)

  • @saga01b

she was only a disney princess twice. :)

  • She does not look like the typical 1870's Paris opera singer. But she does have a great voice.

  • 1870's? haha yeah i agree.. she doesn't.. ;P

  • because this is a concert not a musical play..

  • Brilliant! Thanks for posting, I just wish she'd sing it slower so some notes last longer

  • i hate the make up...reminds me of the Adams Family

  • i wish she would slow down this is such a beautiful song...

  • Why on EARTH did they cut it off right here?!?!?!?!?!

  • I've just listened to several of Lea's performances on youtube and I have to say this: She has a beautiful voice, she is almost always pitch perfect, her voice is powerful and crystal clear - but she is too technical. There is never enough feeling and emotion in her singing. She is always exactly on beat - does she not know what tenuto is? I may be spelling it wrong, but I know when a true artist uses this at the right moment, it makes shivers run up your spine. Lea does not do that for me.

  • i respectfully disagree, i think she is able to translate that emotion, even behind cartoon characters that's why disney picked her twice. not to mention her miss saigon credentials and other achievements

  • Well, that's fair enough. It boils down to personal taste sometimes. I did state the obvious positives. She just doesn't "translate" that emotion for me. Have a listen to Frances Ruffelle's version of Own My Own and compare to Lea's 10th anniv Les Mis special version. Lea's voice is much stronger and clearer, but Frances' interpretation, for me, is much more emotional.

  • I think you have to catch her midperformance. There's too many videos on youtube of her doing concerts and not enough of her actually acting. Perhaps it's just a matter of taste, but when I listen to her sing, all the lyrics of the song just make sense. With other singers I get so caught up analyzing their performance I ignore them. But Lea makes me stop and listen. She's just so...believeable. In my experience, she is extremely capable of expressing emotion. Check out Miss Saigon.

  • YES!!!! Let an alto sing it!!! This is beautiful in the lower key!!!

  • @truesunn

    she's an alto?

  • @piaaguilos I didn't expect her to be an alto too...she can hit pretty high notes, but I guess I've never heard her sing the really high ones...well, if she's an alto, she's the best alto I've ever heard

  • @ethalinia

Wow. that just blew my mind. How do you know she's an alto? Her voice seems high to me but I'm no professional =D

  • @piaaguilos I'm no professional too :) she can hit pretty high notes, but a soprano should be able to sing this song in the original key, but I don't know if she sings this song in a lower key because she likes it more that way, or because she can't hit the higher notes...but then again, for example, idina menzel is supposed to be a mezzo-soprano (not even a soprano) and she can hit superhigh notes...so, that kinda confuses me :D

  • @ethalinia Here's how I see it: I am an alto II, the lowest female voice part, yet I can sing Soprano 1, pretty easily. Fact is though, my notes are richer down in my low range, just as Lea's are, which is why I'm classified as an Alto, not a (mezzo) soprano. Also, people like to hear about sopranos in the performing arts world, not altos-- so very often, alto singers who can hit high notes are classified as sopranos in the media, etc..

    Love her voice <3

  • Oh...that explains it pretty clearly :)

  • (not sure) I think that it's how your voice sounds when you're singing. Not what you can reach...

  • Comment removed

  • She's a mezzo-soprano. She's singing it lower because she isn't a coloratura soprano. In musical theater terms, a mezzo-soprano is between an alto and a soprano and is a belter. A coloratura soprano is above the soprano and sings falsetto.

For me, Lea is, by far, the best mezzo-soprano I've heard... ever. My goodness! Lea should go jail for having such a beautiful voice. It's too awesome!

  • You're wrong on all counts. Lea IS a soprano -- she is usually singing in the lower register of her voice -- almost a belt voice . She HAS upper notes, but they are not strong enough to perform with. "coluratura" literally means the ability to move the voice around very quickly -- there are coluratura mezzos for instance. And finally, high sopranos are not singing in a falsetto.. it's a head voice, just like tenors have that can sing a high C or D..Vocal terms are not musical theater based!

  • Sorry, my bad. You're right. Vocal terms aren't musical theater based. And high sopranos don't sing falsetto unless it's opera or if they want to... But Lea said herself that she was mezzo not too long ago... Maybe she's a mezzo who is so versatile that she can do soprano... I dunno... And people, don't listen to me. I might be wrong again. :))

  • Lea has no qualities of a true mezzo in her voice -- she says that because her range is not that hight (she has not developed her head voice). Mezzos tend to have long necks and be a little taller. Even Marilyn Horne, one of the greatest mezzos ever, started out as a soprano! Lea is singing more in her chest voice than head, thus the power in the lower voice. Females don't have a "falsetto" -- it's a head voice, not created like a male falsetto. No falsetto in opera unless its a countertenor!

  • @dbrel wow..thanks for that! now i understand.

  • @dbrel really? i thought she is a mezzo soprano...

  • @dbrel Thanks - i get so tired of people's ignorance and unwilling to learn. I hear people say, "well so and so only sang one high note, is not a coloratura"! LOL - Oh well, I gave up - your turn - Thanks again

  • @dbrel wait.... there's still a possibility that she's a mezzo soprano... i mean she's pretty good in singing low notes.... that i myself have hard times reaching even if i'm a mezzo too

  • @dbrel you are right, a real soprano.... a sweet soprano, not the shouting type:)

  • @dbrel If she's a soprano, her high notes should be strong enough to perform this in the original key, no? (I don't want to argue, as you clearly know more about music than me, but I'm just asking :))

  • @dbrel I don't think Lea is a soprano. She may have a well-developed head voice, but I think she is definitely a mezzo. A gorgeous voice! Who cares if she's not a soprano? Many mezzo-sopranos can extend to a high B or C. Doesn't make them sopranos! Lea's voice is velvety and just right for what she sings. Have you ever heard her claim to be a soprano?

I teach a LOT of voice students, I don't know everything, but I am pretty sure Lea is a mezzo with good belting and legit technique.

  • @deliriou5freak I know mezzo-sopranos who can go up to E or F - and yes, I mean E6 and F6! But they are really strong, deep and low mezzos. So what? Mezzo-sopranos are a dime a dozen, and probably the classically trained ones can sing as high and low as a soprano.

Lea is a lyric mezzo, but since she's been singing as a belter for so long, she can only sing in a belty way - that's why she would never be able to really sing Christine's songs - she's a belter. With a pop-ish sound, definitely!

  • @PhanPhanPhanPhanPhan I don't know about that. Besides, the beauty of musical theater is that it can change all according to one's interpretation of the song! So what if she doesn't sing it exactly as others do? That does not make her interpretation any better or worse, just different. I for one, enjoyed this quite a bit. Lea has a beautiful and smooth voice. She is clearly talented and very pleasing to listen to.

  • @tj5553 I agree :) Her version is really beautiful and smooth and lovely - not operatic in any way as others have been singing it, but amazing nevetheless, as everything she does. :)

  • @PhanPhanPhanPhanPhan

Mezzo doesn't just mean you sing low. Mezzo describes to tone. A mezzo has a dark tone, most of them can and so sing just as high as any other Soprano. The tone is just darker.

  • @PhanPhanPhanPhanPhan

Mezzo doesn't just mean singing low. Mezzo describes the tone of the person's voice. It simply means the tone is darker and more deep. Most, if not all, Mezzos can and do sing as high as other sopranos, it just has a darker sound.

  • she will always be the best . wiw

hope you all know what is meant by opera in the phantom of the opera . whooo

  • to be honest I only know one opera that has dialogue and that´s Zauberflöte!! The other´s are classified as Operetta!

  • a singer can quickly tell the difference between a musical and an opera. the vocal techniques used in each are radically different. Its really highly based on the vocalization if there is a question of how to classify a show. However, there are more blatant differences when it comes to storyline, choreography, and often style of speech or dialogue (although both may have dialoge).

  • Why is this version so fast?

  • It sounds like a "Disney" version of the original... very princess like... =)

    but good, real good...

  • heh you're right

  • Probably because she's Jasmine. ;)

  • and Mulan
