  • Best thing about Tool no fag playing keyboard.

  • @stfuNsmokethis Dream Theater uses a keyboard and they make it kick fucking ass. Also, metal music is about identifying with the suffering, anger, angst, etc. of other individuals; don't pollute this great genre by using words like "fag" that demonize an entire group of people to describe something you disapprove of.

  • if he's the man, then I'm the man and ...wait a minute...

  • he is the man

  • This is the first time I've been on a video and haven't seen pointless bitching in the first page of comments

  • @nateliebert Yea no internet fags yelling about "no dude you don't play it like that it's the other string first blah blah blah" It's fucking Justin this time!

  • love him...

  • @SubsistenceSC you can order a wal to his specs on the wal bass web site. But that is justin.

  • If this isn't Justin, please tell me how many other people on Earth have that color and type of Wal bass?

  • @bullsnake I guess he kindda looks like him, and since you're saying its him, i believe you. No point in lying right? Question though, is that you filming?

  • @BloodMusicTrinity Lol, no it's not me filming.

  • i remember when this first aired i was stationed in florida....the vid aired about 3 weeks before schism hit the radio...i was the first of my bass player friends to know how to play it....

  • Obviously not justin lol. The hair is shorter and he screws up, so i doubt its him.

  • @BloodMusicTrinity Dude, it's him. Hands down. The video skips to show different parts of the song. And the parts he does play are perfect. And Justin's hair hasn't always been shoulder-length. Hell, when he first joined the band he had a buzz cut!

  • @BloodMusicTrinity That's Justin you donkeysaurus.

  • @BloodMusicTrinity That's so obviously Justin I find it hard to believe anyone can say it isn't, AND it has been edited, the picture changes and the timing gets a little fucked up.

  • @basslover171 Yeha obviously, he's edited to show a few main riffs :P the timing is fine? like i said he's cut the video up.

  • @BloodMusicTrinity Look at the date this was posted dude. Schism came out in 01, this video is slightly older than that, meaning its at LEAST a bit older than 10 years old. He grew his hair between Aenima and Lateralus onwards.

  • @ainsleywalker the date says 2006 lol

  • @chrisslipknt444 Yeah you didn't read what I said properly lemme explain. This video was made before the Lateralus album aparantly, the album came out over 10 years ago, before his hair was really long (its short again now) Get it??

  • @ainsleywalker ohh yeah i understand now haha sorry!

  • @chrisslipknt444 No problem buddy

  • @Mikemasonrock Very true, it's weird but when a bassists tone is so perfect you can almost tell that they could play slap/tap/pluck/pick/strum as well as each other but just do what suits it.

  • i love this guys sound. so perfect for tool.

  • @Mikemasonrock very true

  • The reason I started playing bass :)

  • that bass sounds amazing even unplugged lol

  • Comment removed

  • @danspare I lol'd good job

  • Good cover man! Couple of very minor errors but can't really fault it. You sound English? Where in UK are you as I offer private lessons at a very good rate. Let me know if you're interested.

  • @danspare dude this is justin chancellor. He knows how to play

  • @danspare You're either making a dumb joke or you don't know that this IS Justin Chancellor.

  • @danspare LOL!!!

  • Justin rocks....thanks for the music. On a side note you little hookers with penises need to quit arguing with each other over who wrote what and who didn't. Over thinking...over analyzing separates the body from the mind....stay in the moment...geez

  • he should play the break on this video...it's one of the best tool's bass parts for me.

  • I wonder what the band thought about him letting something like this slip out on youtube, I'm sure they frowned upon it

  • @Mikemasonrock I always prefer bass player using heavyfinger picking (nail attack) instead of using pick.

  • :D

  • @Mikemasonrock bullshit. who does them all. it's utopic. You can't master at all types one of them must be best

  • It's almost like he sweep picks on a bass but none the less he is a great bassist

  • That isn't Justin is it? Sure his hair kinda looks like him, but not facially

  • like the rest of the band he is a genius and is responsible for so much of the bands sound..a lot of bass players rate him as hard to play..

  • @cam01235 The parts themselves aren't exactly difficult, technique wise, they are more complex and difficult in timing. You can't really "count out" the parts as you would with any other material. Justin uses lost of delay and distortions, and almost all Tool songs are in some other time signature besides 4/4. This is why he is good, he is able to concoct smooth bass lines to songs in 15/8 or 6/8 or what have you, which takes real musical knowledge.

  • @Jalreal yeah timing is always the tricky bit.. i agree u cant always think about the time u need to feel it.. they r always doing interesting timing changes danny carey is just unbelievable i wonder where he gets it from.i think hes into geometric magic or something.i think many times the drum and or bass provides the melody adam seems happy to sit back some times which is good to many guitarist r trying to show how big their balls r which sux! haha they r all awesome players

  • @bryanappleg8te erm....who knows/cares?

  • @bryanappleg8te what? you could have meant several things with that comment...

  • Thats not just a hard riff, thats got flow and groove. Not many people can wield an instrument like that, and look and sound so comfortable.

  • Tool basslines are not easy to play at all. If you can play Schism, you have achieved something. I have yet to play all the way through perfectly. The hamer-on and off thing is very difficult to play. Anyone can "play it", but if you're actually going to play it properly and not just something close, it's not easy to do over and over again. For me, anyway. And I don't suck bawlz.

  • I think it's funny how you people are arguing. This is music not politics. instead of cyber quarreling why don't you just sit on a horse dick

  • I WANT THAT BASS!

  • I must be missing something. I've been a bass player for 10 years and a guitarist for about 20. I don't see the magic in what this guy does. His sound is great, but that's not a factor of playing, rather, a factor of money spent on gear. Can someone explain to me why this guy is hailed as a god? I mean, he's not bad, but I just don't see it.

  • @ctcassidy he really is one of the best out here, don't know what u mean with "the magic" ...

  • @inMYtimeOFneed92 "the magic" is what you all seem to be calling his playing. He IS one of the best--behind Billy Sheehan, Geddy Lee, Robert Trujillo, Rudy Sarzo, Steve Harris, John Myung, and about 1,000 other players I don't have room to name here.

  • @ctcassidy that's your opinion and i think u are totally wrong man

  • @ctcassidy you didn't list cliff burton

  • @keyper86 I would have, but he's dead.

  • @ctcassidy its the creativity of an artist that gives him the god status.. and obviusly even you havespent 30 years you finally realized that you just arent good... dont be jealous and dont quit your day job

  • @24opium24 Eeeeaaasy there bud...I was just asking a question. Definitely no jealousy here. (and by the way, music IS my day job--which doesn't happen unless you're pretty good.)

  • @ctcassidy a musician that gets paid to play whatever crap they give them... looks like a job that suits you. no wonder yo cant see the beauty in tool and probably a load of other bands..

  • @ctcassidy i don't hail him as a god.....but he is a great bassist.....especially his creativity...he doesn't stick to following the guitar like a lot of bassists do. sure he use's a lot of effects, but what he makes from the effects is stunning to listen to. it's all opinion though, personally i don't like flea very much but i respect that he's a great bassist, just not what i like to listen to

  • i just love justin's approach to the bass. he is perhaps the only bassist i know who prefers to make the bass beautiful, not a noise in the background

  • @Mikemasonrock THANK YOU FOR MAKING THAT POINT

  • normally im not a fan of pick style on bass but this guy showed showed me that it doesn't suck

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA danspare.

i mean this is obviously a cover, not the original bassist...

  • @pearljam227 ehm. This is justin chancellor, and yes, he is the originial bassist.

  • @stoffeboyei no shit

  • @stoffeboyei Paul D'Amour is the original bassist. Justin Chancellor joined before their Ænima tour started up.

  • @gis2326 Yes I know that, but the other fella thought this guy in the video was just some dude making a cover of the song, and we all at least know that Chancellor was the bassist for Schism

  • @stoffeboyei Oh okay, i get ya. Sorry.

  • @gis2326 Paul left the band because of bad chemistry with the other members. Compared to Opiate and Undertow, Ænima is by far the more evolved and refined album. Do you really think you can top Lateralus with their old material, I love the ablums but compared to Lateralus, Aenima and 10,000 days, the quality and musicianship isnt even comparable.

    Brandon.

  • @Wolvve I know why Paul left lol. I was replying to somebody who replied to another. I initially thought that he told the guy that Justin was the first bassist, so I corrected him. I misunderstood what he meant though, because he obviously knew that Paul was the original bassist.

When did I say anything about topping off their "newer" material with their "older" material?

  • I wish i could have synesthesia like him, he enjoys this in a higher level.

  • @007Pogo what is that exactly?

  • @ToolKid21 A neurological condition.

  • I think there is a certain point in playing ability when someone isnt really a bassist anymore but more of just an artist. idk. i think justin is right at the top end of still being a bassist

  • @Lemmyshruya4o We all speak, well most of us! It doesn't mean we all think the same just because we say the same things, what matters is the tone in which we say it! Who knows? I know what you mean though, it's like looking at those transparent photos where you see something and someone sees something totally different! You see him as a bassist, but to someone who admires what he does, I mean really admires, he's an artist!

  • @NTNSLUVMNZUHVNTSCRD Exactly! I was talking about some of the people who play but dont take the standard role of a bassist such as victor wooten, marcus miller and such. I guess i mean justin is still a rhythmic bass player, not a soloist, If that makes any sense at all... haha

  • To all those comments sayin this isn't Justin from Tool, are you f***ing kiidding me? Are you always so stupid? He's not making mistakes, the video has been edited. He's my favorite bass player in this world, now that Jaco's dead.

  • @akjacobteague

I didn't say the 'best', i said the most original. Victor is a supurb player, but i think his style is abit tentious. Justin's style isn't particulary hard, but the sounds, Justin get's out of his bass hits all the right buttons, for me, anyway.

  • Justin didn't make any mistakes. The video was intentionally cut to show different parts of the song more quickly. After writing this song and playing it night after night I find it hard to believe that he could have messed up more than once in this video.

  • @ndvak13 yeah becasue of the bad video quality its hard to tell but if if you pay attention you can see the edits where it skips forward

  • im not sure but i think he made several mistakes on this.........

  • @christiannandres Hmm, I think it's the quality^^

But could be, I mean: Keenan sang Parabola wrong, one time.

    So they definetly are human^^

  • @EazyRun well yeah,i mean:im not one of those lifeless fans who consider their favorite band as gods or idols , for me are just men ,able to perform extraordinary music, but still im pretty sure for whatever reason he made a hole bunch of mistakes, weird from such a great bass player

  • @christiannandres Yeah, I was overwhelmed when I saw some live videos of Tool. I always listened to Punk and every band I heard wasn't able to play their songs like they recorded it (what a shame, because the songs were amazing)...

And then, there was Tool! Always played the right notes, used the effects they used in the studio version... Amazing! They are like... I don't know, they mean something to me^^

Maybe he wasn't able to play. I need a little also a little practice, before I can play.

  • @EazyRun well yeah maybe he just didn't care and was kidding around ...who knows !tool is amazing, they are out of today's crap

  • man i made eye contact with this guy when tool played redrocks in 2010. just saw him roamin around. best day ever

  • @paulallen71 I had the same but with Bobby Burns from Soulfly :D

  • I always thought electric basses sound shietty unplugged. Lol.

  • Justin Chancellor is bass ass on bass, on 10,000 days he so bad ass.

  • u have too be the dumbest mother fucker ever to think justin doesnt fingerpick

  • @nutmonkey9 Picking and finger picking sounds different and you can tell Justin does both. Very talented dude.

  • aaah! Are you sure this is Chancellor?Because I'm preety sure if it was him he must have known that the song he wrote is in drop D tuning and this bass is not tuned correct.

  • I'm surpised anyone needed to wait for him to start flapping around to realise it's not Justin. a) He plays like a dick and b) He can't pronounce 'schism'.

  • I love the nasty buzz sound he gets.

  • To all the pick haters, you can learn from Justin. And he can play with his fingers too. It's called versatility folks

  • @thegunclub123

He plays a WAL MKII bass mainly. There absolutely gorgeous basses, but they cost thousands to buy :( lol

  • I'm curious about how this video came about... Who is shooting it? Justin looks kind of bored, maybe? Either way, love the guy's style. Maybe, if I play 3 hours a day... I can play most of the bass parts in Tool's songs by age 50.

  • Highly underrated bassist...Deserves way more respect for what he does. If people knew, Just how hard it really is, To even conceive a bass line like that of...Schism, Or Forty Six and Two, They would have as much respect for this man as the rest of the fans do.

  • @crix222 Who doesn't give him credit for what he does completely miss understand music and its composition. In other words, they are ignorants!!! We could mention a couple more - Sober, Disposition, Vicarious . . . and pretty much every Tool songs!

  • @crix222 He is without doubt one of the most underrated bassists. People really should listen closely to a lot of Tool's music and hear just how intricate and exciting Justin's playing is

  • Comment removed

  • @ja524309 Yes he did "moron". Paul wrote Aenema, Stinkfist, Eulogy, and Pushit. Justin wrote 46&2, H. Jimmy, Third Eye, and Hooker.

Please get your facts straight before you call people names. Thanks! :-)

  • @ja524309 To be more specific...Paul contributed a little to H. and Justin finished it. Also, I heard that the 46&2 bass line was written completely by Justin and when he showed it to Tool in his audition it was one of the reasons he got the job. They then wrote the whole song around that opening riff. Clearly the entire song structure is in the key of D minor (typical of Tool) and the guitar riffs are all based on that opening riff.

  • @crix222 wow, suck his dick why don't you. haha. He does inspire a new way of bass playing though

  • @crix222 yea whole band is underrated, especially danny. i think they like it that way though

  • @crix222 don't worry man, his time will come !!!

  • @crix222

    Justin ain't underrated!!!!

  • Adam Jones

  • Hahhah. @danspare "i'm only trying to help this guy out." either you're a comedic genius or an idiot. either way, thanks for giving me a laugh.

  • i love the metal sound of the string.

    one of the greatest bassist.

Tool is the best and more complete band i ever know.

    Lyrics 5/5

    Visual 5/5

    Music 9/5

  • he's the man

  • yea, good comment danspare, you are very well informed & knowledgeable, hopefully that begginer will appreciate your encouragement

  • @johnny0909000 haha :) well played lol

  • @johnny0909000 i hope so, he has got potential, you can see he will be proficient with enough practice

  • @johnny0909000 LOL, dude, this IS the guy that wrote the song, and he played it perfect here.

  • this is a good effort for what looks like is a beginner player. you messed up slightly at 0:14 but its hardly noticeable. PM me and i will show you how to play it. Good luck and keep practicing dude!

  • dude, that IS justin chancellor, he wrote the song

  • @danspare that IS Justin Chancellor

  • Lol dude that is the person that wrote the song Loool

And he didnt messed up at 0:14.

  • @danspare Wow. You think you can play Schism, yet you don't know the name of the bassist that wrote the riff? You're the beginner in that sense.

  • @DCmar93 i'm only trying to help this guy out. He is on the right track, but i can help.

  • @danspare Dude, this is the bassist from Tool! Why don't you understand that?

  • are you a troll?

  • knobby.lol

  • @danspare Dude, that is the funniest shit ever!

  • @danspare this is the guy who wrote the bass line

  • @danspare wow you're dumb. i'm pretty sure he knows how to play the song that HE wrote.

  • @nightrainfan im not dumb, i'm a huge fan, got all the albums 100 days is my favourite!

  • @danspare you mean 10000 days?

  • @danspare fail X)

  • @danspare fail

  • @danspare

Are you serious!? This is Justin Chancellor - he kind of wrote the song. I'm pretty sure he knows how to play it the correct way. You are a total douchebag.

  • @danspare HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • @danspare OMG XD

  • @danspare lololololololololololol is all i can say

  • This song is fun to play i know the intro it's not very hard

  • good playing :)

  • It would be great if the audio and video synced up.

  • does anyone know where this video originates from??

  • the strings are ernie balls it says on their packaging

  • what strings he use

  • ernie balls. .45 .65 .85 .110

  • Justin is defo, one of the most orginal bassits of the 21st century. Bold statement, but you know its true. :) What a band Tool are.

  • @kazumaslave wouldint be a bold statement, i can bearly even hear bass in 21st music

  • @kazumaslave no one else beleievs me when i tell them this

  • @kazumaslave-What's the bass?

  • @kazumaslave How is that a bold statement, considering the crap that has been coming out the past ten years?

  • @jinzu33 Best be trolling.

  • @kazumaslave Victor Wooten, enough said about who's one of the best bass players of the 21st century.

  • before your eye is the fucking man. well.....one of four.

  • i love your game Justin :) nice bass ;)

  • Everyone who says that you can't play a bass with a pick has never heart and felt "Sober" by tool....

  • ok your right but chancellor was not the original guitarist on sober..that would be paul d'mour who was good but not TOOL good.

  • it doesnt madder who wrote the bassline for sober the sound is important....

  • Amen to that!

  • your retarted you know that ! Did you invent the bass guitar? no Then you should not have any right to discrimintate because someone plucks strings differently bwarg. Playing bass with a pick is used for different sounds which is music is all about you dumbass seriously bqarg999 go to hell

  • crappy editing job on the filmers part.

  • twat

  • If Justin ever made a youtube channel and just played his own music on it Im sure it would be one of th emost highly viewed. For bassist if nothing else.

  • Lol sry dude i wanted to give thumbs up XD

    But i miss clicked

  • Whenever I read youtube comments, I feel like I should apologize to god for squandering the precious time he gave me. I some of you feel the same.

  • @Bwarg999 LOL. That cracks me up whenever I see it. I make it a point to correct them since they want to be assholes on the internet.

  • I think the point is that the guy wrote this bass part and regardless of how well he plays it, I like his music a lot more than any of the haters music I have heard...

  • he plays it perfectly well in this video, the thing is some stupid persons mistake the sound quality of the video for his playing skills. you have also to note that he played acousticly with no amplifier

  • you can play schism better than justin chancellor? he wrote it... i love how you cant play better than i him i garantee, let alone maybe you can play his stuff, but you are probably too underskilled to write anything of your own that doesnt sound redicliously retarded.

  • He wrote it, you didn't, and that's why he rocks and you're nobody.
