It's good . But realize that a female vocal for this song makes all the difference> Paul Dresser... You might want to check this out: Eventide Poetry Music
indiana is good and all( i live in huntington, and im 14) but i gotta say its kinda getting boring( if only it was more like chicago or somethin, then ide like it better)
joehandcock01, (Sorry for the delay in responding.) I'm sure there's a few more renditions here on YouTube. I've put this on the list to re-record at some point in the future-we'll see. Thanks for watching.
Arrudabug, (Sorry for the delay in responding.) I'm detecting a pattern here-Hoosiers love Indiana! *WINK WINK* You have a lot to be proud of. Thanks for watching.
Tm462, It's great fun to do these little clips. I'm just so pleased that there are so many people out there who enjoy them. Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the number. Regards, J.
That the author of Sister Carrie, Jennie Gerhardt, The Financier, The Genius, and An American Tragedy wrote a few of these lyrics explains some of the emotional reach of his novels. Their power can be measured by the distance between the sentimentality of this song and the crushing force of Theodore Dreiser's vision. Worth reading is Dreiser's tender account "My Brother Paul" in Twelve Men (1919). Paul is Paul Dresser (ne Dreiser), the writer duly credited on the record label seen in this clip.
I was looking for a clip from a W.C. Fields movie in which they sing this song, and found this instead...very nice! Looking through the other videos...what a great and worthy project, giving all those old recordings a digital rendition accessible to the world!
Eustacelufgren, Thank you for the compliment. It has given me great pleasure to be able to share some of my little collection. I'm pleased you enjoyed a bit of it. Regards, J.
Belairbolt, This, I think, is one of those songs that makes everyone yearn for hearth and home. I'm a city boy and it makes me long for simplier the times of youth. So glad you enjoyed it. Regards, J.
Calumettv, Probably or until a year or two later. Sadly there isn't nearly as much information out there about Columbia as there is about VTMCo. Regards, J.
I like that machine and song, I live in Indiana so maybe thats why. I also own a Model 163 Viva-Tonal. I think these machines are right on par with alot of full size consoles. They have a great volume and nice bass, especially if you can find a good shiny viva-tonal record. My experience for some reason...Viva-Tonals are worn grey in color.
Calumettv, Funny thing about Viva-Tonals, you can't always go by looks. I have some that look pretty bad, but sound very good. But you right-when they're clean, they are amazing records. Some very quiet surfaces! Regards, J.
I had to sing this (not by myself) at one of my fourth grade programs. (I think we did better only cause well this doesn't have an electric piano playing it) I live in Indiana. I'm elevan.
Paul Dresser was born and raised in Terre Haute, IN...my hometown. He was quite a character. I collect anything, including sheetmusic) related to "On the Banks of the Wabash" and Paul Dresser. If you are interested, Clayton W. Henderson has written an interesting book on Dresser entitled "On the Banks of the Wabash."
just read My Brother Paul, so i just had to hear this for myself :)

Great old song. I grew up in a village and
now live in Los Angeles. I think big cities
are too stressful for healthful living.
Tx 4 the nostalgic post.

A great song. The chorus was sung in The Jolson Story by the actor playing the young AL, the World's Greatest Entertainer, for sure.
